Has passed away at the age of 63. I’m sure many of us older members can remember what a formidable partnership him and Withe were from our battles with Villa in the early eighties.
RIP
Gary Shaw

Re: Gary Shaw
I remember him and Peter Withe as if it was yesterday although I’m struggling to think of many more from that era. I think they were both in the team when Villa won the European Cup which I think was the same year we won the UEFA Cup.
A tragic accident I believe knocking his head from a fall.
Condolences to all his family and close friends.

Charny yep you are right they were both in the side that won the European Cup. However, it was the year after we won the UEFA Cup as they pipped us for the title in the 80-81 to qualify for it. As you know that was the days when only the champions qualified for the European Cup , unlike this Champions League rubbish where you can finish 4th and then have the opportunity to be able to win Europe’s top prize the following season.

He was a great player. Quite fancied him tbh
( love the blonde ones lol )....not sure what's happened here with Gary though. He seems to have died following a fall. So im wondering if he sustained a severe head injury. 63yrs is way too young and such a sad event to due from if this is true.
RIP Gary Shaw : a great player.

Re: Gary Shaw
I should have remembered that Shed, the year we were beaten by fixture congestion playing something like 3 games every 8 days with a squad of about 14 players. I may have exaggerated a bit but not by much I’m sure.Shed on tour wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 3:35 pmCharny yep you are right they were both in the side that won the European Cup. Re: Gary Shaw
So sad, Gary Shaw was a fab player and the Villa team that pipped us to the title had some other great players, Peter Withe, Dennis Mortimer, Gordan Cowans and the fabulous Tony Morley to name but Four.
RIP Gary Shaw.

Re: Gary Shaw
Sometimes wonder had we won the league in '81 ahead of them would the players and manager we possessed back then gone on to win the European Cup instead of going to the other. AVFC seemed to have a run of easy ties up to the Final if thinking back and just maybe, we could have achieved the same end product with the level of opposition presented. Although there were Cup defeats at the time to club names like Shrewsbury and a European exit to team from Scotland so perhaps even back then it wasn't maybe to be.
Sorry to learn of Shaw, he were a pivotal player for them back at the time and contributed significantly to their successes of that era.
