PFA nominations

Post by Gaz » Thu Apr 14, 2005 6:12 pm

Chelsea have dominated the nominations for the Professional Footballers' Association Players' Player of the Year award with three stars selected.
Captain John Terry, goalkeeper Petr Cech and midfielder Frank Lampard have all been shortlisted for the award.

They are joined by last year's winner, Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, Crystal Palace striker Andrew Johnson and Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

The winner will be announced at the PFA awards dinner on Sunday 24 April.
Has to be Frank Lampard IMO!

John Terry for me, Chelsea's defence has been awesome and defenders never get recognised in these awards, they nearly always go to the glamorous strikers and creative midfielders.

John Terry, simply because he started his career off pissing around and got into trouble with the old bill but instead of doing a kieron dyer he got his head down and is now reaping the benifits

Lampard Or Terry, Hard to choose 1 from the other. the others shouldnt get a look in tho.

As for young player of the year id give it to Robben Or Defoe, And certainly not Rooney

Not a bad player but he hasnt done that much compared to Robben and Defoe. Robben has had a hell of a good season at chelsea

Come on people while Lampard has been brilliant I can't believe that John Terry hasn't got more votes!

Chelsea, until recently, have been almost impregnable at the back and John Terry has been absolutely immense, he's quite simply the best defender in England now (he's overtaken Campbell and Ferdinand, two of the best defenders in the world!) and of course he is the Chelsea team captain.

Also he scores a lot of goal for a central defender, so let's end this prejudice against "stoppers" and vote for John Terry!

Gerrard - he has been awesome in what has been quite an average team this season (particularly in the Prem). Liverpool would be lost without him IMO!

Surely its easier to look really good in a average team. I think if gerrard was playing in a bigger team he wouldnt have half of his current imapct.

Good point there Luke... when you're in an excellent team and are surrounded by superb players (Lampard at Chelsea) it is all too easy to look like an average player.

One of the chelsea players has to win it simply because they still look outstanding in an outstanding team!

Yeah just like they were lost without him against Juventus in Turin?

Don't fall for the media hype Gerrard has been relatively ordinary for Liverpool this season, ask any Liverpool fans about him and they say the same.

Yer i get what you mean!! But then again someone playing in such a fantastic team with similar class players playing around him is going to have more opportunites to score, and in Terry's case is going to have more help at the back stopping opposition strikers scoring.

Of corse Gerrard wouldn't have as much of an impact if playing in a bigger team but i could see him having as good an impact if not a better impact than Lampard because he is in my opinion a more complete midfielder.

Right sorry to get on my high horse about this but...

Lampard is the best midfielder in the Premiership (and possibly Europe) this season FACT!

Gerrard has had an ordinary season by his high standards, Liverpool can play very well without him thank you very much and are probably wishing that they'd cashed in on the £35million Chelsea were offering in the summer.

Makalele, who isn't even nominated, is a much better midfielder than Gerrard and has been more important to Chelsea than Gerrard has been to Liverpool.

John Terry has been the most improved and best player in the Premiership this season and fully deserves to be Player of the Year.

Anyone who disagrees with me is a fool!

(Only joking about the last bit!)

ow is gerrard more complete ? Lampard scores and stops goals scores left foot right foot head he is a great leader to me he is one of the worlds best midfeilders gerrard has just some of thease qualitys imo

Gerrard is a good player but to be honest everytime I see him he seems to be obsessed with trying to play 60 yard diagonal "Hollywood" passes all the bloody time!

Sometimes a 5 yard simple pass is all that is needed, Lampard can do both the intricate and the simple things (for an example of a useful 60 yard pass witness his pass into the corner, with just the right amount of backspin, for Joe Cole to set up Drogba's goal against Bayern the other night) better than Gerrard at the moment.

From what you're saying Toby, it would seem that the main difference between Lampard and Gerrard is the way in which they read the game and their vision. Perhaps Gerrard seems intent on playing these long balls because he doesn't have the vision that Lampard possesses.

On the other hand, it could always be down to managerial preferences. Maybe Rafa prefers that style of play.

Not sure about it being a managerial decision, Liverpool doon't seem to play in the same way when Gerrard isn't in the team.

Anyway don't get me wrong, Gerrard is a great player it's just that there is no way that he's been the best player in the Premiership this season.
