Dalian Atkinson

Post by Shed on tour » Mon Aug 15, 2016 11:28 am

Died in the early hours this morning after being tasered by police in Telford.
Will always remember him for the hat-trick he scored against Middlesbrough.

RIP

Really tragic and upsetting news. Dalian was a such strong, skilful and outstanding striker who served our club with distinction. Also remember well his performance against 'Boro in 1988. To pass away at such a comparatively young age only adds to the sense of tragic loss.

Am sure all our thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP Dalian - always remembered here.

 The police have got to stop using these bloody Tasers on domestic situations, how many more deaths do they have to commit, they should only ever be used in a real life threatening situations, if the person is carrying a weapon of some sort, and then use absolute caution, in this instance the policeman who used the Taser should be prosecuted for manslaughter, and his Dalian's family heavily compensated for several million pounds, that should stop them using these bloody things willy nilly when they see a minor situation, and then only by a well trained officer who can suss the situation out and be absolutely sure that the the person is going to injure someone with a weapon, not just a bloody argument out side his house, this is what causes riots with the inappropriate action of some hot head police officer.

We don't have all the facts but clearly the person who called the police thought there was a life threatening situation which is probably why the police had Tasers with them. That said I have sympathy with everything you've said and think we definitely need some tighter controls before anyone else loses their life unnecessarily.

Thank you Charners, how's the golf going these days???? we played the Ryder cup Course Le Golf National just outside of Paris last weekend, talk about tough, I shot the first 9 with a 41 but the wheels came off the back nine lol, then we played the Stade De France golf course the next day, very nice course, but again bloody tough very hilly, and talk about rough, once in there forget it, and the temperature was in the 30's mighty hot, but enjoyed the weekend games,

RIP Dalian Atkinson...wonderful player. I was privileged enough to watch him several times...when he was unplayable.
Just imagine if Sir Bobby had him 8/9 years earlier.
Peace to his loved ones.

Judging by DA's nephew, it appears that DA was having an extremely violent psychotic event , claiming that he had already killed many of his family, ( which he hadnt) but that he also had his hands around his dads' throat during this rant. So the TASER useage would appear justified, but NOT the repeated (nor any amount of ), kicking. This smacks of racisim to me , dont what people say.

All very , very sad tbh.

:x As I have said the Taser should have only been used once to stun DA, not 4 or 5 times, then if true the kicking him once he's down, is unacceptable, this is what causes riots and ill feeling towards the police, are they the police so thick that they cant see that this could explode in their face, and if the police start getting beaten up by mobs they only have themselves to blame, it happened in the USA and could kick off here big time, I really hope the perpetrators get locked up and dismissed from the force for their uncontrolled actions, they are just too bloody handy with them Tasers,

Ashford Blue the Police have a difficult job to do in most given circumstances. Looking at it from a civilian perspective it's easy to pass judgment but can't always see the bigger picture. If Mr Atkinson was indeed hit excessive times with the taser device there should be an official enquiry (once is enough to subdue most suspects) and as for 'kicking' : can only hope that's some bullshit rumor or someone got their facts incorrect. If so it's the officers themselves who need to face criminal charges.

Was sorry to hear this news. Mr Atkinson was not a player that all fans will remember and so sorry last word had to be with this tragic episode. Sympathies to his immediate family at this difficult time.

Maybe if you lived here and went to a few games you would remember Dalian Atkinson as im sure every itfc supporter who was around at that time would. Very good player for ipswich, i loved watching him play when i was a youngster. Sad to hear this news.

It's not as if he only had a short spell at the club. As best I recall he joined Town as a youth player and stayed with us for the best part of 4 years 3 of which he made a decent number of first team appearances. I think after Aston Villa, Town is where he made the next most appearances throughout his professional career and will be well known to Town fans who were around in the Bobby Ferguson / John Duncan era.

it's always the case isn't it that the media likes to harp on about so called bigger clubs.

They did it when SBR died. I was Newcastle this....Newcastle that.....but all those feckers did was sack him. Town hardly got a mention if I remember rightly.

He left ITFC in 1989. People born that year are now 27 years of age. If Saint Jude's post is read properly, he clearly says, "not a player all fans will remember"......, they'll know of him, but they'll not remember him. Fairly certain Saint Jude will remember him very well.

Defending Saint Jude here? What the F is the world coming to? He himself will tell me to fk off.

Anyone who took the time to read would damn well know that it was in fact (regarding Atkinson's career at the club) would be too early for some of the say "younger participants" or indeed fans, to recall.

I never saw Ted Phillips or Crawford play, but it don't mean I'm unable to recognize them.

Once more, respect to the player and his family at this unfortunate time.

Hallam Blue you raise a valid point : when Sir Robson passed on, seem to recall there was minimum time or coverage on his tenure at Portman Road and Newcastle United seemed to have the biggest connection. Maybe because Robson was born in the vicinity, had strong ties to the North East, made it more relevant, but in retrospect - and for what he did for this team in making us one of the most recognized club sides in Europe (albeit for a short time) - the great man deserved a much closer association with ourselves than what was (believe) originally omitted.

Two West Mercia police officers are under criminal investigation following the death of former Town striker Dalian Atkinson earlier this week, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has announced. The 48-year-old died in the early hours of Monday morning in Telford, shortly after being Tasered by police.

An IPCC statement reads: “Mr Atkinson died following contact with police outside an address in Meadow Close, Trench on Monday 15th August.

“During the incident a Taser was discharged by an officer. Further analysis of the Taser is being conducted. The IPCC’s team of investigators has gathered statements from a number of witnesses.

“A post-mortem was held yesterday (Wednesday 17th August) and the cause of death was inconclusive. Further tests will be carried out. The IPCC is liaising with HM Coroner.

“Two West Mercia Police officers have been advised they are under criminal investigation and are also being served with gross misconduct notices.

“A criminal investigation does not mean that criminal charges will necessarily follow. The IPCC investigation is at an early stage and the position will be kept under review as the investigation progresses.”

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell added: “Having carefully considered the evidence gathered so far, we are undertaking a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Atkinson’s death and the level and type of force used. Two police officers will be interviewed under criminal caution by IPCC investigators.

“As this is a criminal investigation, the IPCC is limited in the amount of information which can be released into the public domain.

"I would ask people to be patient during the progress of our investigation and not to add to speculation about the circumstances of Mr Atkinson’s death. Speculation across the media as a whole can risk prejudice to the investigation process.

“We will keep Mr Atkinson’s family updated and our thoughts remain with all of those affected by his death.”

I wouldn't mind betting the female witness who came forward almost immediately stating she saw him taking a good kicking etc is spot on. Time will tell.
