Now we know why it was a 7.30 kick off! Most of our team will have to be home before it gets dark :D

So far so good, the lads have done very well, nothing in the game and very few chances. Ive been very impressed with Pat Webber ar CB, very cool and assured. Ive seen nothing so far to suggest we cant pull off a shock, just hope we dont run out of steam.

You really have to take your hat off to the youngsters, given a chance to progress and shine against a good Premier league side and they never embarrassed themselves and it sounds like had a really good go. I have to say that the changes were forced on mick but he was honest about it and said the kids would be playing.

The future is looking good if we can keep this run and confidence going.

Very proud of all.

I don't think anyone will be unhappy with this result or the performance of our youngsters who must have given their all to still be in the game at the final whistle.

Well done lads I'm sure we're all pretty proud of you.

 I said the other day in my comments on the Brentford match, that we should give these young guns a start, Bluemike says he's impressed by wolfie at CB tonight, so give him a go against Fulham, that's what their there for as back up for injured players.

Bottom line we gave it a go and even with a kindergarten line-up kept them out until near the end. No shame in being beaten by premier league opposition especially with the team fielded and appears the kids did the team proud. Would have wanted to progress to the next round but realize will never see this competition included to the honors list.

Can't help but wonder what would have occurred if the strongest team had been fielded but what's done is done. No malice towards the opposition, just beat Fulham in the league next up and maintain league status.

Cease wondering, dear Judy. It's Mick McCarthy you are talking about here........, "luck" isn't in abundance......., gosh darn it, there'd have been seven serious injuries, and there'd have been a 4-0 pumping occurring for their endeavours!! :D

Take a bow the Kids of 2017, they did themselves and the club proud last night as well as the near on 2000 Town fans who not only made the journey but who thoroughly enjoyed the occasion, once again the fans also did the club proud, got behind the kids throughout and I did not hear a single moan or groan about the line up and performance. For an hour we more than matched them and the longer it went on the more I thought a shock was a strong possibility. MM was spot on when he said they only scored because we were out on our fit in the last 20 minutes, totally knackered but still despite going 2 down they still had the character to fashion a good goal and almost snatch another with the last action of the game.

With only Gerken, Rowe & Celina considered senior players it was no surprise that Palace had control of the opening few minutes but Town were looking well organised and disciplined and prevented the hosts from creating any thing of note. Even in the opening 20 minutes you could again see the composure of Flynn Downes coming to the fore, always cool on the ball and looking to make that forward pass, at the back Pat Webber had started very well and had got a couple of timely tackles in the edge of our box, his calmness in difficult situations really was impressive, it was obvious Palace were trying to build down our left with most of their forays forward and Tristan Nydam was often up against Two palace players but he too had started brightly. Town were starting to show more as an attacking force now and were getting into One or two good positions but it was just not sticking in the final third and chances were at a premium, Folami did have a shot for Town but didn't trouble Speroni in the Palace goal.

Town were defending so well and keeping a good shape and it took Palce until the 35th minute to work Gerken, the big man getting down to save a header from a Palace corner. The home ended the half on top and Gerken was called upon to make a second save with HT nearly upon us, this time tipping away a well taken free kick from under the Bar. There was little to choose between the two sides and most in the Town end were surprised and pleasantly pleased with what we had seen, we just lacked that little bit in the final Third.

The second half started with Town getting forward a couple of times, Woolfenden in particular went on one marauding run through the Palace defence but it came to nothing when it matered most, Palace then had Gerken saving well down low from a long strike. Town's Celina then hit a shot high and wide at the other end, the game continuing to go from one end to the other and considering our line up there was still little to choose between the sides. Ben Morris came on for the final Quarter of the game and he too was to put in a very good performance in what time he had. It was obviously we were strating to run out of steam and the solid look about suddenly looked a little ragged as at times we were losing our shape and giving the ball away. it was from one of these errors that we fell behind with only 15 minutes left to play. McCarthur doing the damage with a lovely curling shot which beat gerks all ends up, instantly the Town fans burst into full voice to get behind our kids once more.

With time running out it was all Palace and Gerken was making two or Three saves to keep it to one but could do nothing to stop McCarthur from grabbing his and Palace's second with another decent effort, It was harsh on Town as they had given their all but fatigue rather than being outplayed had proved to be the stumbling block. With the whistle not far away we got our moment to celebrate with Celina finsihing off a good move started by the impressive Downes, Morris did so well to get his croos in and the unmarked Celina fired the ball home when in loads of space, Town's fans went crazy, Despite there being hardly any time left we oh so nearly got a second with the last kick of the game, Celina took a free kick from out on the Right and sub Monty Patterson's clever run to the near post resulted in his looping header from sailing just wide of the goal at the far post with Speroni stranded.

The boys got a rousing reception at the final whistle and every one of them should feel so proud today, it a valiant effort which for an hour deserved mopre than what we got. So many players stood out, Pat Webber in the first half was immense, Luke Woolfenden got better and better and looks a good kid, Tristan Nydam had a super game as did Flynn Downes, in truth they all deserve a mention, we just lacked a tiny bit up front with Folami & McLoughlin finding it hard to break down the Palace defence, had Morris been on from the off it may well have been different. Be proud of our kids today, the future is in very good hands.

Gerken (8) Fowler (6) Woolfenden (8) Webber (7) Nydam (8) Rowe (7) Downes (8) McDonnell (6) Celina (6) Folami (6) McLoughlin (6)

SUBS :- Morris (7) Patterson (6) Smith (6)

Thanks Mike for a super report as usual. Fills me with hope for the future of ITFC. Great to hear how well the fans got behind the team. Hope more will now turn up at PR and give that sort of support. COYB

Great report Mike, one of your best and so encouraging to read. Get your arse down to the Evening Star and offer your services, you'd be offered a job for sure.

Where the f*ck have all these kids come from ?... not far back reports suggested our cupboard was looking pretty bare, but clearly this isn't the case now. Somebody somewhere within Portman Road has definitely made something happen cos these things don't happen by accident.

Certainly Satudays starting eleven will be interesting as last nights performance suggests one or two of these "kids" could be ready for a start.

Fantastic result. IMO the best ITFC performance for ages in that it must have proved to MM (in fact he has all but admitted it) that he doesn't have to fill the squad with journeymen that nobody else wants in order to provide cover for injuries to the first team. All the players last night deserve to feature at some stage in the first team this season, and I hope that MM is now prepared to give them a chance should the opportunity arise.

But he came back from Tottenham more than 5 years ago, our conveyor belt of decent young talent seems to be much more recent ?...... or is it simply that the talent has always been there but Mick McCarthy has failed to recognise it ?

Anyone who has watched the U-23s regularly, will know that we possess a number of talented youngsters with great potential - who play the sort of football traditionally associated with ITFC.

The fact that we're now starting to see them in and around the first team is, I think, a mixture of needs must, together with a deliberate change of attitude by MM towards using academy resources. The latter resulting from internal discussions - initiated by ME who invests sugnificantly in the academy - following last season's disappointing performances. In short, MM now embracing a 'Give Youth A Chance' approach; as opposed to 'you'll win nowt with kids'. I think this change is leading us to a much better place, both on and off the pitch.
