This wasn't by any means a performance for the purists but was all about character and boy did we show that today especially with the injuries to Taylor and Berra.
Imo the man of the match award today goes to the whole team as without them all putting in a shift we would never have come away with this result.
The celebrations when we scored were a bit special as well.
Great day out today. I agree with what you said about the commitment shown, I'm not saying he was our best player but I would single out grant ward for the shift he put in today. I have criticised him in the past for going missing all too often, today he just kept on going and ran his socks off.

For me I thought diagouraga and was great, he made a big difference. But each player deserves credit for the effort they put in, we were the better team 2nd half and I feel we just about deserved the win, our season needed that

The moment Huws scored that winner, players celebrating in front of our end, fans getting wild. Such chequered season and we are so starved of moments like that. Massive lift given underwhelming January transfer window and recent Milnes comments.

Did we deserve it? I'll say that the team was duly rewarded for their commitment and battling performance. Total contrast to some abjects matches particularly Huddersfield last month.

It didn't start promising though. Bialkowski was enforced to make two good saves and looked as if it was gonna be a long afternoon for us. Bjarnason hit the bar too and that was their last meaningful chance in the first half. As for ourselves we didn't sit back but we never threatened Johnstone either. McGoldrick had a few good glimpses but it was Villa who had most of the ball. Lansbury at times too much space in the middle as he could have afforded a larger number of passes. Diagouraga was a bit lethargic however improved in the 2nd half and it resulted in Lansbury not having had as much latitude.

Only three good opportunities for Villa in the 1st half and the key for keeping their forwards relatively quiet was playing three centre backs in 3-5-2 system. Their combined 26m pair of strikers found it tough and tight though Kodjia still seemed dangerous when left unmarked.

We lost two centre backs whom were replaced in their positions by Knudsen and Spence. I thought :'oh dear if we don't lose this I'll be amazed'. Knudsen and Spence to face prolific strikers and the scenario of 2nd half looked disturbingly.

But different Town team came out of the dressing room and we firmly kept them on their feet during the first 15 minutes. Nice surprise as I fully expected us to sit back.

A few good attempts, the most regrettable moment would have been (had we failed to win) a Spence's chance as he somehow missed an open goal following corner and scramble in the box.

Emyr Huws has certainly added some spark and energy into our midfield and that is so clear to see. Box-to-box central midfielder, hungry to play, determined to impress. How refreshing is to see someone like that.

Sitting back was probably inevitable scenario knowing Mick and Villa did begin to dominate from 65 min onwards. Attacking substitution as Adomah replaced full-back Hutton. However our makeshift defence surprisingly stood firm and apart from occasional mayhem in our box Villa only had one good opportunity after which McGoldrick cleared the ball off the line.

When I liken this performance to Huddersfield away last month that is a total contrast. We did much more today to rattle the opposition. Lets remind ourselves the generosity of our players prior to Huddersfields first goal in that game. Things like that were in a minority today. We as a team were a sheer nuisance for them in the 2nd half. Villa players were struggling to find a space at times.

And the winning goal for us and its manner. Quick counter attack, McGoldrick running with the ball and central midfielder joined the action in the box. Huws was at the right place and right time to finish it off. Quite 'incredible' circumstances as we have been crying for a long while for the midfielder like that. Some of us have been annoyed and fed up with lack of attacking impact from central midfield in last 2 years. So how enjoyable was to see the goal like that. In my opinion players like Skuse, Bru or Douglas if they had been on the pitch in that moment they wouldn't have been interested to do what Huws has done in order to score that winner.
This time I'll recall the Preston game and 2nd half where we could have killed the game off but for the lack of support in the box. Today there was a support in the box for McGoldrick in Huws to score and it paid off. Clear difference when having different midfielder with different intentions.

A few tense minutes followed. Couple of corners for Villa, yet another scrambles in front of our goals but we somehow survived. Final whistle and huge relief.

MOTM? A few players stood out. I'd pick Huws for having added movement into the central midfield which looks better nowadays. Diagouraga improved in the 2nd half and he was a bang right defensive midfielder.

Bialkowski was the unbeatable barrier. Somehow he was at the right place every time when called upon.

Both Spence and Knudsen deserve a special praise as they were enforced to play in unfamiliar positions and didn't do bad however Knudsen keeps hoofing pointlessly too much.

If Mick reverts back to 4-4-2 at any point (probably will) and drops Emmanuel then it will be a stupidity as he keeps impressing.

Lawrence? A lively silver as ever and he seems to feel so comfortable.

This win probably ends our relegation worries for this season. Personally I'm very worried about our future given the clubs policy but not thinking of that today. It's Huws' goal and celebrations that sits firmly in my memory and will be there for long.

I'm proud of the boys this morning, each and every one of them. As Shed rightly says, that is all we ever ask of them, to show true commitment, some passion and to lay everything on the line for the club, every single one of them did that in abundance yesterday at Villa Park. With Cole Skuse failing to overcome his injury it was the same team that by and large played the majority of the match against Reading with Grant Ward again stepping into the Midfield space vacated by Skusey.

There was barely 15 seconds on the clock when Villa can count themselves fortunate not to be down to 10 men as Hourihane plants his elbow into the head of Emyr Huws. It was Villa that started the game sharper and Twice in the opening few minutes Bart had to pull off good saves to keep it level and then a few minutes later they rattled the bar much to the relief of the Town players & fans. Things seemed to be going from bad to worse as Steven Taylor limped off holding his leg, meaning Knudsen was swithced to one of the Three man CB line and Myles Kenlock on at Left Wing Back. It was Villa who still looked the most likely although Town were having a few forays forward of their own with McGoldrick & Emmanuel the Two players standing out most for Town. Unlike the Reading game we had not been winning the Midfield and Diagouraga, Huws and Ward had often been second best to the loose balls and being beaten to the tackles. As the half neared its end Didsy had a couple of efforts that failed to trouble the keeper and then worse was to come for Town as we lost another CB, this time Berra being forced off following another arm into the face, Spence this time taking his place in a very makeshift Three at the back. While Villa had probably had the better of the half aside from the Two early saves by Bart and the one that hit the bar they hadn't troubled us too much after that.

All the HT talk was about how on earth we were going to see the second 45 through with such a makeshift back line, in effect we had no less than Five Fullbacks on the field and I think to a man every Town fan would have snatched your hand off for a point even before we kicked off again. What followed made me feel proud to be a Town fan again. Surprisingly it was Town who came out of the blocks and looked to take the game to Villa, suddenly it looked like it was Town winning the Midfield, snapping into tackles, closing down, making runs down the wings, Ward suddenly looked to be popping up everywhere, our winger was lookin more like a midfield playmaker, dictating the play and picking his passes with aplomb. Huws was starting to see much more of the ball while Diagouraga was the one sitting deep offering protection to the back line.

Following a long range Huws shot that deflected for a corner Spence somehow contrived to scoop the ball over the bar from about Five yards when he should have buried the ball into the gaping goal, such a chance missed to go ahead. Town continued to look the better side and Didsy saw a header go high over the bar. Town's thrown together defence was actually standing up very well to anything Villa could throw at it, Spence in particular was doing very well and showed like Webster he can play the ball out with his feet as opposed to hoofing it, Knudsen too to his credit was doing everything asked of him most of the time although he has a tendancy to stand off at times and not close down quickly enough.

As the game entered the final quarter the expected surge by Villa started to come, Adomah had come on and was causing a few problems, while Lansbury was becoming more influential the longer it went on, but still Town stood firm. As we entered the final 10 Minutes Didsy came to the rescue to clear one off the line, this was really the first time we had looked in real danger of conceding in the second half. It was to prove a crucial moment as a minute or so later Town incredibly took the lead, following a good advantage by the ref McGoldrick surged forward, reached the byline and sent in a super little cross, roaring in was Huws to rifle the ball home, oh the joy and ecstacy as the net rippled right in front of us, it is moments like this that make it all worthwhile, another Richard Chaplow moment from Watford a couple of seasons back, the celebrations were quite something to behold as the previously mouthy Villa fans stood silent as we staged our own party.

Of course with Town we are never safe and last few minutes had to be seen out, it felt like an eternity as did the extra Four minutes, it felt like Villa had corner after corner after corner but still our boys stood firm. The celebrations at the final whistle were incredible, our makeshift bunch of misfits, loanees, freebies and has beens had seen off the mega spending Midlanders and deservedly so, Hogan & Kodija cost what 26 Million between them ?? You can keep them. The Chambo fist pump was like it used to be, he meant it and it mattered, we were treated to Three of them as all the players came over to join the party, great scenes and a fantastic feeling. To a man they did us proud and worked their arses off.

Bart (8) Berra (6) Taylor (-) Chambers (8) Emmanuel (7) Knudsen (7) Lawrence (6) Ward (8) Huws (7) Diagouraga (7) McGoldrick (7)

SUBS :- Spence (8) Kenlock (7) Bru (6)

Against Reading and yesterday we have seen a different Town, far more hope for the future, players wanting to express themselves and looking for the ball instead of hiding, standing up and putting in a shift and being prepared to get hurt, that is all we ask, it is all we have ever asked. There is no doubt the new arrivals have lit the place up, Huws & Diagouraga again did so well yesterday, more so in the second half, Didsy is like the player we know he can be. Spence really impressed me yesterday too, so versatile. Grant Ward has not escaped my criticism lately but for me he edged MOTM in a CM role, he rose to the occasion. The Two young wing backs Emmanuel & Kenlock are coming on leaps and bounds too. I would not like to ignore the fantastic captains role Chambo produced yesterday, as the defence was depleted he stood firm and put in a hell of a shift as the senior CB, he was all over the place and marshelled the stand in's superbly, well done skipper. This Seven game run of unwinnable fixtures doesn't look so bad right now, just a shame we could not get the wins against Preston & Reading that we probably should have got. Bring on the Brighton. COYB'S.

Who, in their wildest, really thought we'd win? Who, in their even more wildest, would have imagined two CHs getting injured, resulting in a makeshift defence that didn't concede against a strong AV midfield and strike force? Not only did we win the second half, with our midfield becoming increasingly stronger and more dominant, but we bagged a priceless three points. The massive injection of confidence and belief that yesterday's performance and result brings shouldn't be under estimated, and is another small step towards getting rid of the doom and gloom we've all had to suffer over the past weeks and months. Of course the full impact of those injuries we're carrying still needs to be assessed - but if we were to start at Brighton with those lads who finished yesterday, then it wouldn't be a bad call.

What a great win. Hats of to all the players.

The team that played yesterday should be given a chance again, especially the midfield.

It's come to a weird point where we were in a crisis through bad results and injuries, that we get forced into these changes .... and it isn't the complete cluster-f*ck that we expected.

Not pointing blame at certain players, but the strict, non-movable selection policy seemed to imply that taking Skuse, Douglas, Berra and Chambers (RB) out of the picture, would mean we would capitiluate. Not the case... just opportunities for fresh blood. That's how it should be.

If Skuse or anyone is to get back in the team, then let it be for form, not reputation.

Can't help feel another team not long ago would have tried to cling onto a 0-0 and we would have probably lost. New blood has injected something .... so run with it, Mick.

Nice to hear Chambo fist-pumping again. Not the much-maligned RB keeping a better youngster out anymore ... but a true rock and great skipper.

I managed to listen to most on the radio although I lost reception occasionally as I got dragged round the shops of Bury St Edmunds...

There were 5 things that struck me, 4 positive and one negative.

The positives:

1. As Bluemike said, we seem to have found the fight and resilience that had gone missing. New blood, positions under threat.... whatever the reason, it's great to see it.

2. I often feel that we get tactically outmanoeuvred as teams change tactics in the second half and dominate us. Yesterday it seems we managed to do that to the opposition. From reading Bluemike's report we managed to get closer and shut down their playmakers.

3. Amazingly heads didn't drop when we lost 2 central defenders. Instead our captain showed his skill n leading a makeshift back line. All credit to him.

4. As soon as I saw the highlights, I thought exactly what Mach mentioned in his report - we won because we have a central midfielder who got into the box when needed. This is a player short of match fitness who was busting a gut in the 83rd minute or thereabouts to get into the area to convert a cross. So often we have seen payers go wide and n one to cross to.

The only negative (apart form the injuries): According to the stats I saw, the goal was our only shot on target. I think we put a few wide and had a few blocked, but we need to be testing goalkeepers a bit more than that.

I don't think we have reached a turning point, but 2 gutsy performances have given us 4 more points than I expected and near-certain safety. Villa are proving that money doesn't necessarily buy success, but I'll repeat what I said a few weeks ago; a lack of money pretty well renders success very unlikely if not impossible. But we know that's how it is at Ipswich. Let's enjoy some good performances and relative overachievement.
Onward and upwards.

Great result - totally unexpected really although when I saw that Skuse was not playing I did revise my prediction for the result.
Well done to all involved in the win yesterday.

I do not like berating players, and there could be many reasons for our win yesterday.
I do like to look at the obvious, though, and cannot help noting the following:

Performances have by and large been awful this season, MM has chopped and changed the starting 11, but some players seem to be ever-present, so in my eyes they must take a large portion of blame for the abject performances.

Yesterday, Skuse was not available. So we end up with a more attacking midfield that actually looks to move the ball forward. And yet we keep a clean sheet. So do we need the ultra defensive holding midfielder?

When Berra was forced off, we ended up with 4 full backs plus one central defender (Chambers). Did we concede? No. We must have been better organised then, and covered better.

I have long been advocating the permanent dropping of Skuse and Berra. Yesterdays result without them in no way proves me right, but maybe there is something in the notion.

If Berra and Skuse are fit for the next 2 or 3 games and walk straight back into the starting 11, I for one will be very disappointed.

Isn't the alehouse that Bluemike visited the one closest to the stadium itself and situated by the bridge at Witton rail station. If right, can appreciate the poor reviews. Last visit, service took so long to arrive we lost interest and went elsewhere and music was on also, at near full volume. (Large TV screen if correct but nothing featured at time of visit)

Would have been advisable to try the Yew Tree a short distance away or even the Barton Arms near Birmingham center. The latter had some issues in past years but has improved considerably in recent time. Prominently a Villa establishment but Town fans would have been welcome)

Last word on the game itself, caught highlights of what occurred and while we rode our luck on occasion and Bialkowski was probably deserving of match honors, it's scores such as this that can prove a real catalyst for games ahead. Maybe concerned about the Norwich game coming up as like it or not they seemed immense yesterday and put together a team effort that was deserving of recognition.

Yes SJ the Witton Arms is the pub nearest to the stadium, if you can call it a pub. To be fair the atmosphere was excellent in the outside tent for want of a better word .
