Ipswich boss Joe Royle admits his side are badly missing a proven goalscorer at Championship level.
The Tractor Boys' problems in front of goal were all too apparent during their 1-1 draw at Coventry and Royle revealed he may need to boost his firepower.
"On the bright side it's a fourth game unbeaten and that's helped steady the ship after something of a rough period for us," he said.
"Tommy Miller scored 15-odd goals for us last season and we've not yet had anyone who looks anywhere near capable of doing that for us this season.
"Since Tommy left we've missed people arriving late in the box from midfield, but Gavin Williams got into the box from midfield and scored his goal.
"I thought it was an outstanding debut from the boy and after he'd scored the goal we should have gone on to win the game."

I'll tell you who we should sign in Jan...
Archie Thompson...
he's the striker for Melbourne and he also plays for Australia.. he is looking for a loan move in Jan because the Australian League finishes in March and he wants to keep playing before the world cup...
If he's good enough for Australia he's good enough for town..
he is extremely fast and is a good finsher.. and his wages would be very cheap!

He played 90 games for Lierse SK in 4 years and made 27 goals. He's an expert in missing easy goals.

If you don't get a new contract at Lierse, you are really bad. Lierse is last in our Jupiler League. 8 points out of 42 and they made 6 goals so far.

putting that in perspective, that's 2 seasons in the Championship and scoring 13 and 14 goals... that's not that bad.. especially for a team that's crap...kv-mario wrote:I hope they don't.ATB wrote:I'll tell you who we should sign in Jan...

I'd give him a thumbs up too, but I'd probably be beaten down for wanting a player from one of my favourite clubs join my other favourite club!
In all honesty, he was equal leading goalscorer in the Juliper league last season, not a bad performance for a Lierse man. (And he left Belgium on his own accord to go home to Melbourne, Mario)
I'd consider the A-League to be around the strength of mid-to-lower Championship teams, and Archie is easily one of the best players in the A-League. Definitely worth a look.

Well, I must admit he had a very good year last year.
2001/02 Lierse SK 31 9 Belgie
2002/03 Lierse SK 5 0 Belgie
2003/04 Lierse SK 25 4 Belgie
2004/05 Lierse SK 29 14 Belgie
14 goals out of 29 games is very good, but as you can see the year before it wasn't good. What I mean is, if you are lucky he makes 13 goals a year but I wonder is that enough for town and is it worth to try?
Too bad you guys didn't go for Bangoura who now plays for Stoke City. He's a young and great attacker. Coming from Standard Liege, number one in our Jupiler League.

Re: Royle ponders Striker move ...
Not sure about "Royle ponders striker move" sounds like he's after an attacking midfielder, what with Tommy Miller being named as someone who we need a new version of.bluebird wrote:Ipswich boss Joe Royle admits his side are badly missing a proven goalscorer at Championship level.

That's how I read it anyway.

Not being funny here ATB...but why dont you inform the Club...they are always on the look out for new players and sometimes the odd "tip off" comes in handy - could even get you a place on the Board !!!ATB wrote:I'll tell you who we should sign in Jan...

It's not a silly idea really, ATB... It'd be good to see an Aussie in town colours too!hallamblue wrote:Not being funny here ATB...but why dont you inform the Club...they are always on the look out for new players and sometimes the odd "tip off" comes in handy - could even get you a place on the Board !!!ATB wrote:I'll tell you who we should sign in Jan...
