you could do worse than watching this -

if you're old enough - great memories

if you're too young - a good chance to see just how good muhren, thijssen, beattie, mariner etc really were :D

That was my second season as a season ticket holder in the West Stand. I can remember many of the games that season so clearly, we were so special in those days and we just took it for granted.

Saw the thread title there, Mr Punch. ......, thought you wanted 26 foot and 54 inches. Was going to offer you a corner of my garden.

I was only one year a Town fan when that game happened. I remember Dickie Davis on World of Sport saying, "How's this for a half time score at Ipswich Town...." Must have been very memorable days.

Was there.
A few years back I was on holiday and a loudmouth United supporter kept going on to me about the 9-0.
I reminded him of this game and his response was "I've never heard about that". My reply was "my mistake, I forgot football only started in 1992".

Great clip Mr Punch - as was Marko's reference to Dickie Davis. Modern day nostalgia isn't what it used to be!

Was also in Churchman's with my late father-in-law, a life-long Town supporter from the very early days. The programmes were written in Latin! :D

Remember it well, though i was not at the game it wikl live with me forever. So proud to be an Ipswich Town fan those days. We were respected and feared by most clubs, that knew we could play and had real quality all over the pitch.

A great retort.

very soon after this game, i was on a coach to watch town v everton at goodison park in the fa cup 6th round.
we were overtaken by 2 millwall supporters' coaches but instead of the normal nasty exchanges, the millwall fans were chanting 'ipswich' and (i kid you not) had an 'ipswich 6 man u 0' banner - they hated united :D

lost 2-1 with beattie almost getting a late equalizer right in front of us, with a trademark soaring header

Manchester United still finished above us in the league in 1980 if memory serves despite that outstanding score. Furthermore they would get some payback fifteen years later in a match many of us have tried to erase from memory.

Someone mentioned the last eight game that year and as a supporter of the opposition also, we fell to West Ham in the last four (when they were a second division team) and do feel in retrospect that had Town been involved instead the result could have been different and we could once again have faced Arsenal in the showpiece event.

Worth mentioning also that had we overcome Manchester City in 1981 I feel we could have beaten Tottenham in the final event. That year saw the greatest Town team assembled and the North London side apart from one or two decent players, were a pale imitation of 20 years previous i.e. Greaves, Dyson, MacKay, White etc. No good crying over spilt milk but it does irritate when you think back how close we were to a treble glory that season.

It was great watching players get tackled without the writhing in pain on the ground trying to get the other player booked or sent off. It pisses me off watching guys looking as though they are pole axed only to see on the replay he was never touched or had the slightest touch..... absolutely spoils the game.
