We approach the 60th aniversary of the appointment of a certain Alf Ramsay.
The man who changed the fortunes of our small provincial club.

Short story about my old grandad, sadly no longer with us, ...... YEARS ago, before TV remote controls were in existence, that famous film clip of Bobby Moore up on the shoulders of someone, with the Cup, came on the TV, ....., I remember him say under his breath, "Dear God, FFS..." Then he said, "Press the channel button, pal. Any channel!"

Every time I see that, I think of him. That World Cup win must've been painful!

I've read it before that Ramsey intentionally omitted Hurst from the line-up that day so in the event that Scots won - which they did - then Ramsey could proudly declare that they had not beaten 'his World Cup winning team'

Last word on them but as for the opposition they had a f**king good team at the time with players such as Jim Baxter, Denis Law, Willie Henderson, Dave MacKay, Ian St John, Jim Johnstone etc. Good enough for a shot at a World Cup glory but they didn't even qualify around that time which if you look at the mentioned names, is bizarre in retrospect.

As for Ramsey himself Yes of course he will always be associated with greatness at this club but believe Robson was the better of the two. For one thing wasn't Ramsey club manager when the team suffered a relegation two or three years after winning the league in '62 ? We always look upon Ramsey as the man who delievered the league championship to here but sometimes fail to realize he was responsible also for a fall to the second division soon after. (do hope the latter is correct as can't imagine anyone else in charge around that time)

What is even more bizarre, Saint, is Scotland were the only home nation to go to Argentina 78......, with Alan Rough in goals!

But I suppose we were the only country to defeat Holland over 90 minutes......., The Argies needed extra time in the final.

Remember watching that match at the time, really rooting for Scotland.

Part of the first World Cup that made an impression on me as an 11 year old.

There's a memorable scene in Trainspotting that features it, but won't give anything away to those that have yet to view it

Didn't Northern Ireland not feature that year also (?) although Best would have been a shadow of his former self if they had been involved. Like Greaves before him he let alcohol ruin his true potential.

(also recall) The '78 tournament was overshadowed by a disgrace in the latter stages when people were unambiguously bribed in order to allow Argentina to reach the final. (Needed a big win over Peru if correct by five or six goals, which in the end they obtained)

Also can just about recall Netherlands having a great opportunity to win the game in late normal time (or late extra time) and take the trophy to Amsterdam, but if that gone in, wouldn't have been a surprise to see a mass invasion by enraged home partizans, and subsequent match abandonment.

People invariably say the Holland team of the 1970s were the greatest side to never be world champions but it's always incorrect - it was in '54 when Hungary somehow missed out.

And a massive NO to Northern Ireland being at the '78 tourney....., only Scotland represented the home nation. * on knees pleading * Don't take that fact away from us!

If you actually watch the Argentina Peru 6-0 game, it's bordering scandalous. It was like Peru miraculously turned into a Damien Delaney back 4.

That match was my first England International and my first visit to Wembley, and by the way SJ, Geoff Hurst not only played in that game, he also scored England's late goal to make it 2-3.

My next England v Scotland game came 10yrs later in 1977, and f*ck me, Scotland won that too this time 1-2, and then after the final whistle ripped up the pitch and broke the cross bar on the goal posts, hooligans!

The great player of his time Jackie Milburn was manager of Town the season we were relegated to Division 2 at the end of season 1963/64.

Sir Alf left Town at the end of the previous season (April 1963) when we finished 17th of 22 teams.

Hey Marko I met Archie Gemmill a couple of seasons back. I wanted to take my nephew to see Derby County v Leicester City and as you can imagine tickets for this East Mids Derby are like gold dust, but one of my golf partners also an ex pro knew AG very well and called him up.
On match day I met him at the ground, had a decent chat with him and he gave me two complimentary tickets for two fantastic seats with dining and bar hospitality. Yes, you're right the man is a legend, and still idolised at Derby County where he played the bulk of his football and where he still works.

I always associated Gemmill with Forest, being part of that great set-up around the time we won the FA Cup and with Brian Clough as team manager. It easy for some reason to overlook the fact that he featured more prominently for the other East Midland club side.

Trouble is, whatever he did, wherever he goes, he'll always be remembered for that goal against The Netherlands, and all other playing endeavors appear to go by the wayside. Guess a similar thing would apply to people like Villa at Tottenham or Armstrong for Northern Ireland. You get picked out for one standout moment and people don't always take the time to recognize other feats or accomplishments.

I'm fairly sure many professional sports stars wish they had one memorable moment that everyone remembers, Saint. I'd place money that Gemmill couldn't give a witches tit if no one remembers his County or Forest career...... He scored "that" goal.
