Mick: "Hands Off our best players"
I don’t want to sell our best players however much money is offered says Mick
Mick McCarthy has reiterated that he will not be looking to sell any of his top players during the summer.
Tyrone Mings, David McGoldrick and Teddy Bishop have all been linked with moves to the Premier League this season, with Blues turning down £10m in offers for Tyrone and Didz from Crystal Palace and Leicester in August.
“I had a discussion with Marcus [Evans, Club owner] yesterday about the players that might be targets,” the Town boss told the Club website.
“You are looking at Murph, with 27 goals this season. Didz is another. I had a word with him and he’s not looking to move. He wants to come back and get himself fit and show everyone what a good player he is again.
“He has been so disappointed with the injuries he has had over the last two seasons and feels he has a point to prove.
“I’ve spoken to Bish and Ty as well. I’ve pointed out to them that Cressy [Aaron Cresswell] played 140 or so games here and another 100 or so at Tranmere before he moved to West Ham.
“He was ready to make that move. He had done his time and he has gone there and won every player of the year award going. He would not have done that if he had played 40 games here.
“So I’ve said to Bish and Ty, ‘you are staying here’. I want to progress. I don’t want to sell however much money is offered. I don’t want to lose our best players.
“I want young, fit and vibrant players to take us forward.”

McCarthy Issues Hands-Off Warning

Boss Mick McCarthy has issued a hands-off warning to clubs who might be interested in signing the Blues’ prize assets this summer. David McGoldrick, who has told McCarthy he wants to stay to prove a point following his injury problems, and Tyrone Mings were the subject of Premier League offers last season, while 27-goal Championship top scorer Daryl Murphy and Teddy Bishop have also been linked with top flight clubs.
“I had a discussion with [owner] Marcus [Evans] yesterday about the players that might be targets,” McCarthy told the club site.

That's the kind of talk I want to be hearing, Bishop has to stay, murphy is a no brainer and won't be going anywhere while a fully fit Didsy would be like a new signing and with Sears gives us a potent forward Three that will score goals for fun. Mings is clearly going to be a good player and will improve further, that said i would not lose any sleep over cashing in on him and bringing in some new blood with the money from his sale, having parr to slip in at LB would be a good substitute anyway.

Also......., play Tommy Smith at the left of centre (as Rossi thinks this will work) or get rid of him.ipswichtownNo1 wrote:Yes, but to take us forward the team need to start passing forward!hallamblue wrote:I don’t want to sell our best players however much money is offered says Mick

Re: Mick: "Hands Off our best players"
Tommy Smith won't be going anywhere but I do suspect a new RB will be arriving in the Summer, along with the return of Kyle Hammond from long term injury we should be well covered in an area where this season Chambers has done a remarkable job which he openly admits is not his fav position but where he is asked to perform every week. If Hammond has a injury free campaign I would not bet against the lad being our number one RB this time next year.

Re: Mick: "Hands Off our best players"
I would much rather see TS at left CB than I would Berra, Marko. Reason being that I think he's a much more complete footballer. Berra is fine at stopping opponents and reading the game, but that's where it stops with him - his distribution is awful, every time he gets the ball he looks petrified and gets rid of it as soon as he can. At the same time, I agree that TS should not be played at right CB - not ever.marko69 wrote:Also......., play Tommy Smith at the left of centre (as Rossi thinks this will work) or get rid of him.ipswichtownNo1 wrote:Yes, but to take us forward the team need to start passing forward!hallamblue wrote:I don’t want to sell our best players however much money is offered says Mick

Re: Mick: "Hands Off our best players"

I sort of agree in a way, Rossi...... He is a more complete footballer. But he is complete at being complete sh1t.
Seriously though, (just joshing with that ^ comment)......, from what I have seen of Tommy Smith this season, (6 or 7 games maybe) he knows the game, and can be relied upon in certain situations, but not all of the situations. He cannot deal with certain types of attack and he looks helpless at times. You will know better than I if changing his position at the back would help make him a more assured defender, but at the moment, unless it's on a plate for him, he's a flapper.
And no I am not singling him out,......., If Mings was better at his job recently, yes, Smith may not receive so much pressure with these attacks,......., but even 3/4 months ago when Mings was worth £275M, bombing up the left AND getting back, Tommy was unfortunately still looking a bit ropey. Maybe he is awesome and complete when he is "off air" but I certainly don't see Tommy being a more complete footballer than Berra.
He can be very valuable up front, ......, that has never ever been disputed, certainly not by me.

Pretty sure Berra has been more useful up front than TS this season. At least in terms of goals scored which I guess is what matters for a CB.

Berra has scored one more goal, but has more appearances than TS. Berra is only any good with his head, TS has scored 2 good goals with his feet. I know what I'd class as being more useful.Dubai Blue wrote:Pretty sure Berra has been more useful up front than TS this season. Re: Mick: "Hands Off our best players"
Well they're both left-sided players. If the situation had been reversed (ie TS played on the left and Berra told to play right) then I'm sure that Berra would have looked just as useless as TS has done played on the right. What I'm really saying is that both of them should be played only on the left - that obviously means that only one of them can play and in my book TS gets the vote.marko69 wrote:I just spat coffee all over the table!

Re: Mick: "Hands Off our best players"
With all due respect, my own personal preferences are that defenders are useful in defence. In my opinion, if Tommy scores zero goals all season, that'd be ok.
Edit; ^ that was in reply to Berra v Smith goals tally.
I genuinely must be missing something that you are seeing with Berra. Again, I see limited games, but from what I have saw, (Which Mick must see too) is far too much hesitancy in Smiths game. If you are correct with positional problems, why the effin hell is Mick not seeing it?

defenders not scoring is fine if you have plenty of goals coming from midfield. We don't, unfortunately.marko69 wrote:With all due respect, my own personal preferences are that defenders are useful in defence. In my opinion, if Tommy scores zero goals all season, that'd be ok.

And I must admit that the insistency of MM plating a CB at RB and a left-sided CB on the right baffles not only me but plenty of others on this board judging by pervious comments made.
With the current squad, I think that most would agree that the back 4 should be:
Parr - Chambo - Berra OR Smith - Mings
the only question would be whether to play Berra or Smith

Berra, without a shadow of a doubt! Being skilled with your feet is one thing, but Berra is by far the best defender we have at this club and we would have to be insane to drop him for Smith.

Okay from the people who have watched Ipswich play live on a regular basis...should we keep Smith or dump him?

Squad playter at best, have seen nearly every game this season and the comparison between the two for me is laughable.

Is there much between Berra & Chambers, J4CK? I always think that Chambo looks flippin solid in defence......, although I do read that he can have the occasional howler. I can't even remember what Chambers was like at centre back haha! He's probably not far behind Berra tbh, I'd definitely take them both together.marko69 wrote:Is there much between Berra & Chambers, J4CK?
