So Derby sacked McClaren after he turned down the Newcastle job to remain with Derby and now they sack him. Despite poor end to the season thought he was doing a decent job.

Wonder if he'll be in the hunt for the Newcastle job again?

Believe Newcastle were on a (largely improbable) last day relegation threat at the weekend but would imagine they in the end survived. So that said they're going to be an EPL side for another season and wonder to an extent why McClaren would decline the opportunity to move to a bigger and more recognized club in a higher league. Shows how much Derby need him now when he turns down another clubs interest to stay where he is, only for his current (or now ex) employers to terminate his services anyway.

Derby have had a good season though. Came within a point or two of the play-off scene, were in the top six anyway for a large share of the season only to drop out towards the end and 7th or 8th isn't too bad a finish over the course of nine months. Guessing he could (now) go back to the Netherlands or someplace else in Europe and take up a position there if his services aren't required in the UK.

Wow Paul Clement who was the assistant at Real Madrid under Ancelotti is set to become new Derby manager that be quite a surprise if ends up being true

I was aware from one of my ex pro football pals that McLaren had been in talks with Newcastle and eluded to it a few months ago before it got into the public domain. It just seems foolish to me that he couldn't wait until after the season had finished and in the meantime focus solely on getting Derby promoted. I don't blame Derby for sacking him cos quite clearly his actions unsettled the players who were distracted by his actions and stopped giving their all to him.

I never have liked him much, even less so now.

Well done Derby, this could be a great new appointment, I'm sure we'll soon find out.

He's bound to have several links in Italy who could be of use to him at Derby.

I've never rated McClaren, to be honest. I think he's over-rated.

When was the last time they won anything?

I think it was The Championship in 2010...

and before that League One Champions in 1993 !

Think a great number on here may be of an age not to remember Malcolm MacDonald.

Yes Newcastle despite a few minor honors in recent years i.e. a second division championship, haven't won an actual significant trophy since 1969 and even that was the then Fairs Cup. Assembled some good teams in the years ahead with players such as Keegan, Waddle, Beardsley, Asprilla, Ferdinand, Mirandinha, Gascoigne etc but real success has proved to be elusive.

Back to McLaren I could actually envisage him in a role at Upton Park, he seems almost tailored for it. Couldn't do any worse than Allerdyce so they could give him a shot and see what occurs.

It looks like McLaren will be taking over at Newcastle after all.

I just hope Derby didn't pay him compensation.

Rumours are that he didnt take the job up north due to high rainfall, Ping are devastated, they wanted to sponser his brollies!
