Arsenal fan who watches their U21s regularly
Should be a very good loan for Arsenal and for Ipswich. McCarthy likes his wingers quick and technical, and you'll definitely get that from Maitland-Niles - at least I'm certain that's where he'll be played.
In terms of his strengths, he has quite a few; he's a very competent dribbler - either tricking out of tight spaces or running direct at defenders. Technically he's very strong, and his passing is an underrated asset. He does have a decent finish on him aswell, and likes a shot from outside the area. Perhaps the biggest standout other than his dribbling is his athleticism and work-rate. He always seems to be on the move, and he's also a very tactically astute player - part of the reason why he's been playing in central midfield recently. It's possible that he may play there for you, as he's shown himself to be competent in the middle of the park.
Like most youth players, occasionally his decision making isn't strong, but in comparison to other young players, it's not a big weakness. Most of his weaknesses will show themselves when he does play in central midfield - he's probably not the best ball-winner but he does make up for that with his speed and determined play.
He will probably play wide for you guys as it's his best position, and while I've not seen a great deal of Ipswich last season, McCarthy tends to employ strong wingers. Maitland-Niles is one of our less-hyped youngsters but he has performed at a consistent level for someone of his age. It could possibly be a big step to go straight to the Championship, but with the seamless way he rose to U21 level, and additionally played an unfamiliar deep midfield role and still performed to a high standard, I'm sure that he will have a good loan with you guys.
The Ox comparison is a pretty good one. Expect a solid, athletic dribbler and a hard worker. If all goes well, expect some end product too!
