A great winger in his day. Any idea how old he was?

He was 81.

I remember the game. It was the infamous 10 - 1 defeat on Boxing Day 1963 (only 5 - 1 down at half time).

Couple of trivia items for you:

The chap standing next to me at Craven Cottage on that day (on the open riverside terracing as was) passed the time by taking frequent swigs from a small bottle of brandy. As the 10th Fulham goal sailed in he turned to me to verify the score as he had rather lost count. It then transpired that he had been to Upton Park for the late morning kick-off and had seen West Ham beat either Bolton or Blackburn (my memory fades!) 8 - 2. So this guy had seen 21 goals in two top division games on the same day!

The return matches were 48 hours later and in both cases the defeated teams from Boxing Day managed to win! In Ipswich's case it was 4 - 2 but if (like me) you were in the Churchmans Stand (now Sir Alf) you didn't see the winning goals because the fog came down and we couldn't see the North Stand! Referee determined it was OK to carry on as he could see both goal mouths from the half way line.

Verulam......., I love reading trivia like that. The guy who saw 21 goals on that day...... The way you described him losing count and sipping brandy....... I had a vision of Tuco from The Good, The Bad, The Ugly in my head.
