Harry Redknapp to Derby ?

According to the local BBC in the East Midlands former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is in talks to become "Director of Football" at Championship side Derby County, that seems a rather odd appointment.

What do others think ?

he vastly overrated IMO. Will fit with Derby perfectly in that respect.
Too little too late ...see em at PR next season and in even bigger debt!

I think he was once considered for Director of Football at Tottenham if I recall? Agree he's had his chips though...once a very good manager, but he's a bit dated now...like someone else I know.

I think you'll find their debt is only a fraction of ours Liz, and it's pretty much all secured by a £15m mortgage on their stadium which they own. Quite uncomplicated finances really making Derby County one of the more financially stable clubs in the Championship.

Money clearly doesnt buy success then.

It can if it's spent and managed well with no better example just down the road at Leicester City.

There will malways be an odd exception but I could point that money has not bopught success even with the Leicester scenario because if monmey had bought it one of the teams that have spend way more than Leicester would be winning the league, I think at leicester it is down to a great appointment at manager level and a group of players that have really clicked and are playing out of their skins, a bit like when we somehow finished fifth.

spending money doesnt always guarantee success but spending no money nearly always guarantees failure

They have to be acquired first and paid for, and apart from two or three players brought in on free transfers the majority of the squad haven't come from the loan and freebie market. What is very true is the importance of a quality manager and Ranieri clearly fits the bill, but once again he wouldn't come cheap and will have required significant investment from the owner who by now has probably pumped the best part of £200m into the club.

Blimey Mike, you make a strong case for Evans to sit tight and not spend, I just hope he's not looking in or listening. Who knows you could get an invite to join the Board.

I can name a Club not a million miles away from Ipswich who are the 2nd highest spending Club in the PL this season - and they can't buy a win and are nestling nicely in the relegation zone right now!

Not sure where those figures come from Liz, Norwich's total net spend this season has been less than £25m which is less even than Leicester's £28m. Meanwhile the Prems biggest spenders will have spent three and four times that amount.

The best example of money don't buy success on it's own is Newcastle United net spend of £75m which is the Prem Leagues 2nd highest spend. It also endorses the importance of making sure the club has an outstanding manager which Steve McLaren clearly wasn't.

Money alone cannot buy success but it sure can help when it's paired up with a brilliant manager like Claudio Ranieri is proving to be.

Newcastle , Norwich , Watford are the highest spending clubs , accounting for 40% of the total spending in the Jan Window . And 2 of them are in the relegation zone.

Out of all these bigger clubs, I think I'd be especially pissed off if I was a Newcastle fan. They are a very large club with complete sh*t history. Even now, with the money spent, they should be upper half EPL every season. It's baffling as to why they are consistently Shyte.

Probably cos they have a crap owner and a weak interfering Board who when they have a decent manager can't keep him or treat him well. Just think of Bobby Robson, Kevin Keegan and Chris Hughton, all managers who got good results and were treated shabbily. That's probably why as a club they are constantly shyte.

Well it's got to be something, and that's ^^^ probably the best theory.
