Yes, RIP Johann Cruyff. Very sad to hear this news as I didn't know he was ill.

He was a man of many "words of wisdom". The one quoted by Hallam could actually point to this forum being loaded with "geniuses" like Johann, albeit, separately.

Some say the world's greatest player but that honor can be reserved for Maradona or Yashin. Arguably the Netherlands most recognized (soccer) player and deserved to win a world championship but the fine teams of the 1970's fell at the last hurdle on two occasions.

Still endured a memorable time both as player and manager at a variety of clubs and the game is poorer today with his passing. Cruyff was a prolonged smoker even while at time of playing (which effectively played a major hand in his eventual demise) but for a time at least, was still Europe's most complete player. Was sorry to learn of today's news.

don't think there is another player like him now is there. He had such balance on the ball.....very much like George Best.

Portugal's Ronaldo comes close as does Messi. Not saying by today's comparison they're better or worse, but two names you would automatically associate.

What would Cruyff at his pinnacle be worth is today's market ? Hard to put a figure on it.

I think Messi and Best are very similar as far as dribbling and creating goals out of nothing. Cryuff and Zidane are similar as far as passing vision, and they could both keep possession for as long as they wanted to. Ronaldo is a great athlete...but I can't stand him.

...and we have, well, "Skuse there he is"!

Zinadene Zidane was as close as I have seen I think, where ball skill was concerned.

You think Maradona was better than Cruyff? Seriously? Can I please have some of whatever you're on?

I would say Messi is way ahead of Maradona too.

I got to give Maradona plaudits as he's one of my all-time favorite players so Yes I do believe he was a better all-round playing individual than Cruyff. While the latter had other names of talent to accommodate his capabilities (Neeskens, Rensenbrink, Haan etc) Maradona was largely responsible for taking Argentina to what they achieved in his career alone. Watch those marvellous bull-type runs against Belgium and England in Mexico '86 and ask yourself if Cruyff could accomplish those feats.

Not only that, but transformed Naples from an average team into a championship winning outfit and other honors. As with other names of great ability (Best, Greaves, Gascoigne) he eventually let self-abuse take a hold and it took a strain on his life but for those other times aside, he was for me perhaps the greatest playing individual the game has produced.

All legends were indeed unbelievable and it's great to watch individual montages of each legend......, but for me, (and I'm 46 years old and old enough to remember "older" football) Messi wipes the floor with them all. He is the Ronnie O'Sullivan of football. Genius.

Bloody great performance v The world champs last night......., ok they collapsed like a bunch of broccoli after Hummels went off, but I thought England were very impressive. If Roy sticks to the Vardy/Kane approach, (injuries aside) you guys are in with a realistic shout at the Euros. F**king pains me to write that.

It's funny, after we went down 2-0 I said same old England and fast forwarded the video as I had to work Saturday. When I saw the score changing I almost shat myself!

I'd love to see a changing of the guard for England...it's been long awaited.

I must admit my interest where England are concerned disappeared years ago, to the point where I couldn't give a sh*t if we won or lost, however I have to say last night was a breath of frsh air and the best we have seen from an England side in bloody years.

How great it is to see the likes of vardy, Kane, Dier, Alli, Clyne etc playing the game with such a refreshing zest as opposed to the bloody plodding of the likes of Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard, Terry, Neville etc etc that dragged us to a p*ss boring level over such a long period of time. I may actually watch the Euro's if this is what we can expect.

I can relate. I haven't been bothered for years. I too will watch the Euros if we put on consistent displays like that. Who knows...Leicester wins the Prem, and England wins the Euros...

Stumbled over the score on a rival forum and story is, Germany looked lackluster and uninterested for the most part, a pale imitation of the World Cup win from two years back and didn't seem focused after they had taken a lead.

One or two were honest enough to admit the opposition were a deserved winner but a majority put it down to i.e. 'a freak score with the English creaming their pants over one standout victory then reverting to type when the big occasion arrives and falling flat on their collective asses in the heat of a major tournament'.

The English had a much more significant win with the same opposition in 2001, expectations were sky-high and honors lists were already being written, lo and behold when the real work - relevant work - began, it culminated in a last eight loss.

I'm not an Anglophobe, just don't like the national team, and gets on my f**king nerves when after some significant result there's always an avalanche of hype and bullshit about what they're going to do, and how they're going to do it.

From all accounts the European stage is in the worst state it's been for years. Germany as mentioned seem distant from their recent successes, Spain are a shadow of their previous stature, even recognized names such as Italy and Portugal aren't up to much these days and as for France - the host nation - some see them as tournament favorites and possess a decent line-up but the burden of expectation being the home country may well count against them. OK it worked for them in 1984, but you can't compare that outstanding team of then with today's standards.
