Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
9th July 3pm Shelbourne v Town A
13th July 8pm Barnet v Town A
23rd July TBC Hadleigh United v Town XI A
26th July 7.45pm Charlton Athletic v Town A
Would love to make a trip to Shelbourne for 2/3 days so will look at that while Barnet is also a ground I have not been to before. Hopefully we get a couple of decent home friendlies.

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
Don't care much for pre-season games but we seem to play Shelbourne every close season ? Guess they'll be some other Irish league fixtures thrown in given enough time. Would imagine West Ham and / or Colchester may be added in due course and isn't there a trip to the continent to face a team from the Dutch or German leagues thrown in often ?

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
Seems to be following previous pre-season programme; would like to see a couple, more challenging, matches added to help hit the ground at max WARP factor. Although the need to avoid injuries etc has to be balanced.

No mention of Cambridge yet which is a shame as I missed that last season.

Any bets on whether there will be a Home friendly and, if so, who it might be?? West Ham perhaps.....

we rarely have home friendlies Mike. But if we do it would be just the one usually vs a London PL club. Might Fortuna though !

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
Unable to recognize the fifth opposition but guessing some club side from France. If these are all the pre-season games listed then there's nothing to really get excited about - I realize we're not going to be playing LA Galaxy or Inter Milan - and would have ideally liked some sterner opposition to have an idea of what to expect from August onwards.bluemike wrote:UPDATED :-

Thee isn't anything to get overly excited about but these games are nothing more than a fitness exercise, I seem to recall we have this type of discussion every season, whether it be the level of opponent or the actual results, bot really mean nothing.Brussels-based Union SG currently play in the Proximus League, the second tier of Belgian football.

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
I think that's only partly true. I'm not sure how you assess the ability of new signings or youngsters coming through unless you see them playing against decent opposition.bluemike wrote:Thee isn't anything to get overly excited about but these games are nothing more than a fitness exercise, I seem to recall we have this type of discussion every season, whether it be the level of opponent or the actual results, bot really mean nothing.Brussels-based Union SG currently play in the Proximus League, the second tier of Belgian football.

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
I'd hoped for at least one more challenging pre-season match. However, it's probably true that no higher level opposition is going to take undue risks, which inevitably effects the intensity of pre-season encounters.

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
I'd rather see us playing friendlies primarily against Championship clubs, and maybe a few league one teams. I don't see the benefit of playing Belgian or Danish teams; it's unlikely we'll see similar styles of play in the Champ. I'd love to see a warm up match with Burton. Agree pre-season doesn't mean much, but it does give the squad gel minutes.

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
Even when pre season games are arranged against Prem or Championship sides the teams they put out are nothing like their recognised starting Eleven's and they resemble nothing more than practice matches. It is totally all about getting up to match fitness, nothing more.

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
Still awaiting official confirmation of the Union Saint-Gilloise friendly.
Marko - true, they're no world beaters but finished a very creditable 7th in the 2nd tier last season, in a highly competitive league where even Royal Antwerp could only finish 3rd.
Their supporters certainly *do* know how to party I swear to God. Don't expect a classic with regards to the level of football, but there should be a tremendous atmosphere. Cant wait.

Re: Pre Season Schedule. 2016/17
Hey there, Scampi, welcome to the forum, buddy.
Hope it's all organised and the game goes ahead. Should be a good match up......, both finishing 7th, 2nd tier in respective countries. Ignore me, I was just mucking about because I hadn't heard of the club. I have since googled and know a lot more now.
Ipswich Town v Union SG......., get it sorted, Mick!
