The last I read was that it was the number of appearances he made for West Ham that triggered any further payment and not international games.

Not quite, we are told that there are top ups based on appearances. Given that he is approaching 100 games for WHU now we should soon be due one of those. It's assumed that a sell-on clause is in there also and playing for England just improves the chances of that coming into play.
