Town boss Mick McCarthy has challenged Teddy Bishop to get back to the form which made him his first choice central midfielder two seasons ago.
The 20-year-old, who broke into the first team in 2014/15 and quickly established himself as a regular, has endured a frustrating time with injuries since then, most recently an ankle problem which he suffered in mid-December.
However, the academy product is fit again but was left out of the 18 at Brighton on Tuesday having travelled with the squad.
“He’s got to get in the 18 and get in the team, show me that’s where he wants to be,” McCarthy told BBC Radio Suffolk following the game at the Amex.
“Two years ago it was Teddy Bishop and somebody else. Well, he’s got to get back to that and I’m hoping that’ll be the case. I know he’s had a lot of time out with injuries but he’s got to get back in.”
Bishop missed all but four games of last season - two starts and two games from the bench in April and May - and has made only six starts and 12 sub appearances this term.
Does McCarthy feel the Cambridge-born youngster has lost his focus? “I don’t know. It does happen, you have an injury and you get down the pecking order.
“Well, the only way to get back up the pecking order is to break your nuts in training and to make sure you’re in my eyeline and TC’s eyeline so we’re going ‘Wow!’.
“Because that’s what happens. If you think it’s just based on matches, that’s impossible, it’s how people are in training on a daily basis. That’s what I judged it on, he’s got to get back in.”
McCarthy, who doesn’t view Bishop as a potential replacement for Tom Lawrence during the Blues’ top scorer’s two-game absence through suspension having reached 10 bookings, added: “I want him back in, I want him with that hunger, that desire to be back in my team and to be the best player in it because he has the ability to be that.”
I really rate Teddy Bishop but I just hope he does not fall by the wayside like many before him, for me he is way too good for that to happen. I always expected a bit of a step back following his injury which caused him to miss all of last season but I also expected a fair bit more from him this campaign, to me he should have been raring to go and hungrier than anyone else to play games.
More of a concern is that I have it on fairly good authority that he spent the entire game sitting on the players coach and didn't/wouldn't get off the whole time they were there so for this article to be in the news today doesn't surprise me and kinda makes sense.

As we have seen from youngsters like Bowditch, Clarke and Carson their initial sign of potential is often not achieved.
Hopefully this won't be the case with Bish but certainly he is going to have to put in the hard work if he wants his career to progress to the level which was being talked about a couple of years ago.

I think he needs to get his head out of his arse. Spent more time on instagram and in nightclubs than anything else while he's been recovering and he's been largely poor when he's played this season. It's disappointing because he has a natural talent but he needs to grow up a bit if he wants to realise his potential because he has lots of it.

Have also heard stories about his visits to night clubs and his attitude in general.
If there is any truth in them then no doubt Mick is trying to get his focus back on football otherwise like many others before him his potential may never be realised.

Shocker!

I'm sure he's just lost his way a little because of his long time out injured, which I'm sure is very easy to do when you're not playing for so long. It's up to him to sort it out though and I really hope he does.

Well by all accounts when we slaughtered Watford 8.0 for the under 23s he played more like we know he can. Complete control ofthe midfield, so Mick fooking give him some game time, and that will sort the lad out,
Writing this from Masapalomas golf apartments where the temperature is 22 degrees and rising ,

Wow - makes your eyes water! (Like a few other practices in that neck of the woods - or so I'm told).

Has he signed a contract for a bit of money... that tends to make players lay back a bit. I don't know but when I signed for Lowestoft Town I was proud to pull that shirt on !st team or reserves for nothing!!
