I remember listening to that on the radio as a kid ... it was a special result.

St Ettienne were really a decent side in those days.

It still nags at me that we didn't win the league that season. Best team .... just far too many games and not enough fit players.

Must admit still niggles that we missed out on the title that season.
To beat Villa 3 times that season, home and away in the league and knock them out of the FA Cup and still miss out on the big prize was gutting to say the least. The away game in the league was only 3 days after we lost to Man City in the semi-final of the FA Cup (still hate Paul Power for that!) and when we beat Villa again I was convinced we were going to win the title.

Alas it was not to be.

I echo all of your thoughts there Shed, it didn't help we were playing three games every eight days with such a small squad, I think we only used about fourteen or fifteen players?

As I recall we also lost four of our last five league games and seven of our last ten as the fixtures piled up, yet we still finished the season only four points behind Champions Villa.

St. Etienne were largely regarded as the best team in Europe at the time and we ripped them to bits, we also won the second leg 3-1 so to thump a team 7-2 with the likes of Johnny Rep & Michel Platini in their ranks speaks volumes for just how good we were.

Interesting article for those not familiar with Town at the time.

That commentator must've been very angry at being away getting a coffee when Muhren struck. The words during the replay, when the ball hits the net, he's talking about being at the Pret a Manger. (2:46) Unlucky, mate.

Imagined it would be St Etienne without need of viewing a link or subsequent replies. Arguably the most high profile and memorable performance for any Town team in European contest and not only that, but we despatched them with similar ease with the second game at Portman Road. This club's got something of a European pedigree other teams can only admire and to go unbeaten (at home) against not only the opposition of the time but Inter Milan, Barcelona etc : it's a great honor.

Deserved more in '81 but the toll of that long season eventually overcame the team and being involved in so much competition but in retrospect a Final with Tottenham would have been a great spectacle for not only the team involved but neutrals alike. Still some regret about the Middlesbrough game that cost us the league championship back then but for a club of our stature to get within touching distance of a league, FA Cup and European prize treble achievement : kids today don't know what they missed.

Unbelievable proud times for the club that unfortunately may never be replicated.
