Town Chasing Record-Breaking Five Out of Five Start !

Post by Charnwood » Thu Aug 24, 2017 11:39 pm

How good would it be to set a new record on Saturday with five consecutive League wins at the start of a season for the first time in the club’s history.

I knew we were doing well but had no idea we were this close to a record breaking start.

I really think we can do it and would love to see it happen, the only concern is Fulham being the draw specialist's with both this season's away fixtures so far ending all square, 0-0 at Leeds and 1-1 at Reading.

Took the time to gather information concerning our most impressive league years in club history (and subsequent starts) and comparison with present time, it made for some interesting finding.

1962 -63 (1st place, League Champions, Old First Division)

Blackburn Rovers HOME draw 3 -3 8/18/62

Blackpool AWAY loss 0 - 1 8/20/62

Sheffield United AWAY loss 1 - 2 8/25/62

Blackpool HOME 5 - 2 win 8/28/62

Nottingham Forest HOME 1 - 1 draw 9/1/62

1977 - 78 (3rd place finish, Old First Division)

Arsenal HOME 1 - 0 win 8/20/77

Derby County AWAY 0 -0 draw 8/24/77

Manchester United AWAY 0 -0 8/27/77

Chelsea HOME 1 - 0 win 9/3/77

Leeds United AWAY 1 - 2 loss 9/10/77

1980 - 81 (3rd place finish, Old First Division)

Leicester City AWAY 1 - 0 win 8/16/80

Brighton Hove Albion HOME 2 - 0 win 8/19/80

Stoke City AWAY 2 - 2 draw 8/23/80

Everton HOME 4 - 0 win 8/30/80

Aston Villa HOME 1 - 0 win 9/6/80

1981 - 82 (2nd place, Old First Division)

Sunderland HOME 3 - 3 draw 8/29/81

Birmingham City AWAY 1 - 1 draw 9/1/81

Manchester United AWAY 2 - 1 win 9/5/81

Liverpool HOME 2 - 0 win 9/12/81

Notts County AWAY 4 - 1 win 9/19/81

1982 - 83 (2nd place, Old First Division)

Brighton Hove Albion AWAY 1 - 1 draw 8/28/82

Tottenham HOME 1 - 2 loss 8/31/82

Coventry City HOME 1 - 1 draw 9/4/82

West Ham United AWAY 1 - 1 draw 9/7/82

Manchester United AWAY 1 - 3 loss 9/11/82

2000 - 01 (play-off winners, Championship League)

Tottenham AWAY 1 - 3 loss 8/19/00

Manchester United HOME 1 - 1 draw 8/22/00

Sunderland HOME 1 - 0 win 8/26/00

Leicester City AWAY 1 - 2 loss 9/6/00

Aston Villa HOME 1 - 2 loss 9/9/00

There alone presents intriguing statistics from previous year, perhaps most notably 1982, when the team that finished runners-up were unable to find victory in any five opening fixtures. This is widely acknowledged in part by Sir Robson's departure for the English national position.

An almost flawless start in 1980 - on route to our best season ever - but a score draw at Stoke City tarnished an otherwise immaculate record.

Obviously what we got now at present time is a whole different set-up, but hoping this weekend can bring those five victories and maybe years from now and future generations, will see greater pride in our accomplishments.
