Pre-Match Thoughts - Mike
The dust may have settled on yet another East Anglian Derby defeat but the fallout from it seems certain to rumble on and on for some considerable time yet. Already much is being said regarding the need for change at the top but as I have already said elsewhere I feel it is purely based on the events of Sunday, had we have won the game it would be as you were, it is a rsults driven business and a win under any circumstances would have the majority happy, for another week at least. So where exactly did it go wrong this time, well for me had the knudsen effort been a couple of inches to the Left we would have been 1-0 up in the early stages and with a very loud crowd behind the boys I firmly believe we would have comfortably won the game, we also contrived to miss by far the best chance of the half just before HT when Didsy somehow failed to convert the free header with the goal at his mercy, had it have fallen to Joe Garner it would have been in, no question it was a terrible miss. Trying to understand what went wrong in the second half is not so staightforward, we again had a great chance to go ahead, again Didsy with a header that just cleared the post seeing us go so close, of course not long after we pay the price for standing off Norwich and letting them play right through us with Two or Three good passes before my MOTM Maddison stroked the ball home. I didn't feel our heads went down, instead our heads just went, long and often hopeless balls pumped forward were Bread and Butter to the Norwich defence and chances in the final Third of the game were at a premium, Waghorn had one other decent effort that just flew over the bar but apart from that we didn't create too muh more. Of course it is disappointing to lose to them again but it wasn't the disaster portrayed in some quarters although I must be honest and say we did let ourselves down in that second half with our approach after going behind.
One thing that was hard to understand for me was the performance of David McGoldrick, he has been flying this campaign and been our best player several times, this time however I felt he was woeful, I am not accepting this out of position nonsense because he was still played as a Striker in a front Three and if we are to look at the tactics then Mick must have got something right as Didsy had Two great chances to score with headers so he was getting into the right positions, no for me his whole demeanour looked poor, his passing was awful and time after time he lost the ball all too easily, the body language looked laboured and half hearted, just when we needed him most he failed to deliver, I accept you can't be on your game every week but in the derby you should be up for it and he didn't look like he was. What really put the tin hat on it for me was not much longer than an hour after the game Didsy decides to come out with comments regarding his future and how important this
year is for him !! Really ? We've just been defeated by Norwich and he is concerned that his contract is up at the end of the season and that Ireland play Denmark in a play off qualifier, personally I could not give a stuff mate, especially with the timing of the comments, have a little bit of thought for the fans please. Reading his comments it would not surprise me if he is off in the Summer though, approaching 30 and concerned about his family in the Midlands, it could well be time for change, time will tell.
Next up we have a trip to Burton which really does look like a game we really need to win, for one it will keep us in the right area of the table but possibly more importantly than that end this poor run of results and in doing so stop the rapid decline of the mind set of Town fans, it gathers pace all too easily and we don't want to go back to where we were last season in that area. Worryingly I see that Burton have failed to score in their last Five League games and that has to end at some point, we know we can score goals and I bet we will need more than One to win this game, last seasons corresponding fixture was One we had to win and we did it, it may be for different reasons this time around but a defeat here will not be good, 7 in 9 would be a dire statistic, while Burton are no mugs at home and are scrapping for every point in their quest for survival I think Town will have enough about them to get a positive result and in doing so bag the points, a win can do wonders for our confidence again which must have taken a bit of a knock in recent games, we have some tough games coming up so we need to start to get back to winning ways, I think we will. The Opposition – Burton Albion

Burton Albion can claim lineage from four now defunct clubs: Burton Swifts, Burton Town, Burton United and Burton Wanderers.
Burton Albion were formed in 1950, and joined the Birmingham & District League. They finished the 1953–54 season as runners-up, and in 1958–59 joined the Southern League North Western zone. In 1965–66, Burton missed out on the runners-up place on goal difference, but were still promoted to the Southern League Premier Division.
They avoided relegation in 1968, thanks to Stevenage Town folding, but were relegated to Division One after an unsuccessful 1969–70 season. Burton missed out on promotion on goal average in 1970–71, but finished as runners-up the following season and were promoted back to the Premier Division.
The next two seasons saw them relegated and then promoted back to the Premier Division again. They stayed in the same division until being relegated once more at the end of 1976–77.
League rearrangements saw Burton moved to the Northern Premier League, because of their location in the central Midlands, and then back to the Southern League in 1987–88, the season after losing in a replayed FA Trophy final to Kidderminster Harriers.
In October 1998, Nigel Clough was appointed as player-manager and he led the club to two successive runners-up spots, in 1999–2000 and 2000–01.
Burton were again moved to the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 2001–02, which they won by a margin of 15 points, and the club was promoted to the Football Conference for the first time.
The club was brought to national attention when they were drawn at home against 11-time winners Manchester United in the third round of the 2005–06 FA Cup. The Brewers held the Premier League team to a 0–0 draw at home, but lost the reply 5–0 in front of over 11,000 Burton fans, setting a record for number of away fans at Old Trafford.
In January 2009, Burton went on to set a league record for the most consecutive wins and, in February 2009, when the team was 19 points clear at the top of the table, Conference sponsors Blue Square declared Burton the winners of the 2008–09 title in a PR stunt in which they paid out all bets. However, a bad run of form only saw this confirmation take place due to other results on the last day of the season.
Burton finished in 13th place in their first campaign in the Football League.
During the 2014–15 season, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took over the managerial position at the Brewers and led them to the League Two title, which meant promotion to League One for the first time in their history. Hasselbaink left by mutual consent in December 2015 to join Queens Park Rangers as manager.
Nigel Clough returned to Burton to replace him for his second spell as manager and led the club to a second-place finish in the league, earning promotion to the Championship, another first for Burton, in the 2015/16 season.
Last season Burton managed to stay up by 1 point, finishing in 20th place on the table.
