Middlesbrough midfielder Adlene Guardioura is reportedly set to depart the Riverside Stadium and be reunited with his former Wolves boss Mick McCarthy at Town.
According to the Sunday People, Boro manager Tony Pulis will allow the 32-year-old to move on during this transfer window, setting up the reunion with McCarthy, the man who brought the Algerian international into English football during his time at Molineux.
Guardioura is unwanted by the Teessiders having made only one start since joining them a year ago, in the 3-2 New Year’s Day win at Preston, in addition to five sub appearances, with a hamstring injury having hampered him for much of his time in the North-East.
The France-born central midfielder played youth football with Racing Paris before moving on to Sedan, Noisy-le-Sec, L’Entente SSG and Créteil before spells with Belgian clubs Kortrijk and Charleroi.
McCarthy brought him to then-Premier League Wolves in January 2010 initially on loan before making the move a permanent switch for a reported £2 million.
After making 17 starts and 22 sub appearances at Molineux, scoring three times, he moved on to Nottingham Forest, again initially on loan, in January 2012.
Spells at Crystal Palace and Watford followed prior to his switch to Boro in January of last year for a reported £3.5 million, the Teessiders having beaten Hull City to his signature. He signed a contract until 2019.
Central midfield is the area Blues boss McCarthy is looking to strengthen during the transfer window with Town having a number of players sidelined with injuries, three of them - Andre Dozzell, Emyr Huws and Teddy Bishop - for the rest of the season.
A move for a midfielder he knows well as cover for the remainder of the season would be little surprise.
Speaking when signing Guardioura in 2010, McCarthy said: "Adlene is an all-round midfield player who is very mobile.
"Technically he is very good and has the physical characteristics to be able to cope with the Premier League.”
Elsewhere, Sunderland are reported to have joined the Blues, Reading and QPR in showing interest in Barnsley striker Tom Bradshaw.
Town were said to be among the clubs eyeing the 25-year-old earlier in the week, although signing another striker is currently not a priority.
