I thought Pennington was easily our stand out player yesterday. He didn't put a foot wrong and I can certainly see why Everton have given him a new 3 year contract. Walters was great and really did add some authority and useful experience to the side and was very impressive proving his fitness over nearly 100 minutes of football, but he did look a little rusty and will undoubtedly get better. An example was when he beat the offside trap and found himself on his own with only the goalkeeper to beat, admittedly with his back to goal and the ball still bouncing, but my feeling was that a back heel may well have beaten the goalie, and by the time he had the ball under control and tried to turn, the defenders were back and crowded him out.

It'll be interesting to see what PH does when we get Nsiala back from his suspension. Chambers has played pretty well so far this season and is our Captain and Nsiala is our man (ie not a loan) and has looked better and better. I wonder if PH will experiment with 3 centre backs which I don't think is his favoured formation or possibly play Pennington at RB where I believe he has played although his performance was so good yesterday at CB that I can't believe he would be as good at RB.

Any thoughts on the matter?

I think we needed another CB for cover as much as anything , Pennington was superb, however, I do believe that Nsiala will come back in to partner Chambo with the new lad dropping out, what we do know already is that if you don't perform you will be droppped.

There’s talk of James Collins joining. He didn’t get a deal with West Ham. I have no problem with that for a short term deal.

Collins would be a worthwhile addition, the name has some significance, but our club have (allegedly) been frightened off by potential salary expectations. Some would say f*ck him. You can't expect a Championship club paying EPL salaries and all the individual needs do is accept a lesser paycheck if he were to join up. Can't abide greedy players, West Ham would be selling for a reason, if he's surplus to requirement there than why should we pay his existing salary.

Bristol City and AVFC favorites to bring him in by some reports. The latter would seem to have the resources to Implement his demands and requirements.

SJ West Ham are not selling him or letting him out on loan, they released him at the end of last season so he is a free agent.

It's all gone quiet Derick around these parts, however I did see John Terry talking about unfinished business at Villa and not ruling out the possibility of a return to them should that happen i can't see Collins going there too, I believe they were our main, if not only rivals for his signature. I think he is still training with us so could still happen, I suspect the International break means there is no rush to sort out anything just yet, in true Ipswich tradition we drag it on till the bitter end.

The only issue I have with the Collins type of signing is that sure they cover a hole for one, maybe two seasons, but they equally stop the development and progress of a younger player who may be a better long term bet.

The amount of players that have passed through us in the past 5 - 6 odd seasons I believe would be a staggering number. Maybe I am being naive ( or perhaps our injury toll is higher than others), but it in my opinion better sides generally have a more stable playing roster than we do.

That’s been my concern for a while that so many short term loans and freebies pass through the doors and shut the door for young players progression. I just wonder if this is a different strategy to Mick. Hurst is new at this level and has found it tougher than expected with a new team from the lower leagues, so that he needs a short term fix until these players have adapted. Collins and Walters are long in the tooth... but have PL quality. That’s different to the vast majority of journeymen we got under Mick who just were surplus Championship squad players.
I don’t like Woolfenden, Morriss and Nydam going on loan, but I would hate it even more for them to spend a wasted year in the under 23’s.
Not sure what Hurst’s real outlook on youth development yet because maybe he’s finding his feet at this level and can’t trust the young players yet. No problem for me with Collins and Walters short term if they can bolster the team.

Former West Ham central defender James Collins is continuing to train with the Blues.

As TWTD revealed, the 35-year-old free agent joined up with the Town squad last week and took part in training for a couple of days.

Collins returned to Playford Road earlier today but with no decision yet made on whether he will be joining the Blues.

Despite the transfer window being closed, clubs are still able to sign players who are free agents.

Aston Villa were linked with the former Wales international, who was previously with them between 2009 and 2012, last week, while The Telegraph claimed over the weekend that Collins has been waiting to see whether the Midlanders firm up their interest.

Sounds like he’s waiting on a better offer.

I would have thought we’d know about his fitness levels, etc by now and have already offered him something.

Good, wouldn't have minded him but injury concerns again and using us as far as I'm concerned
