Foxboro' 93

On 6/9/93 the US national squad victory over the English in Massaahusetts occurred, today is the 25 year anniversary. This was at a time when neutrals saw fit to label it a shock of epic proportion but in retrospect saw little reason why the score should be disputed. Bottom line the Englsih team of that time was poor and we were an upcoming nation within the sport (as future results would confirm)

This was part of a tournament staged that saw Germany and Brazil also and those of an age may recall the public castigation Taylor recieved and British tabloids had a meltdown as what they deemed 'an embarrassment, what the f*ck did we witness etc'

Just for the record, Wegerle (then of Coventry City) and Lalas got the goals although Tony Meola made some fine saves to keep the score intact. Took some considerable pride at the time, too young to recall the Belo Horizonte game 1950, but this caused certain stir due largely in part to the English being beaten by a nation whose first sport was far detached from "Football". That was then, but as before we showed in subsequent years and games that we were able to compete with the more recognized teams of the sport. American soccer was the on the way to further eradicate itself from the lable of part-timers and amateur level.

Bloody hell, Alexi Lalas! Forgot all about him. Blast from the past there, Saint.
