Those stats do appear to make a mockery of the call for more defenders. But it’s the way this Town side play the game that has made our defensive side of our game so successful. We defend from the very front and as soon as we’ve lost possession.
If they (opposition) haven’t got the ball, they can’t hurt you.
Our problem in McKenna’a early days here, and before he arrived, was how we defended when we’re not in possession. I remember us dominating games to such ridiculous level, but the single opportunity the opposition got to attack us or get the ball in our box, they scored. Lincoln at home being the classic example.
My gripe has always been our inability to deal with balls unit our box. We rarely clear the ball well or far enough up the pitch becysse our CB ( Woolfie mostly) simply couldn’t header the ball! The other problem was our decision making by our CB’s. It was usually Edmundson one week and Woolfie the next who would “ gift” the ball just outside our 18 yard area whilst most of the team had gone forward.
That has largely reduced to a “ rare” event now: a mark of our coaches effect on players ( Notably Woolfie). But Edmundson is weak, and most of the Ariel defensive work appears to be fine by Burgess ( the best natural “ defender”) out of our CB’s in my view. I don’t actually class Woolfie as s traditional CB. By that I mean s CB who wins his headers, Marshall’s the opponent away from goal, or is up his Bankside not allowing him to turn, and should clears the lines. Woolfie “ brings the ball out” - that’s the start of attacks; not defending.
But without doubt our “team” defending ( or ability to keep possession?) is what makes us so effective. But I have to give credit to the coaches for improving Woolfie’s overall game. He has improved a helluva lot.
How would we fair against a team able to stick the ball in our box? I’m not sure we’d be too good. We need x2 CB’s and I’d sell Edmundson.
Sorry re long post … just my take on things really ….
