Huddersfield Town v Ipswich Town
Saturday 30th September 2023 – 15:00
John Smith's Stadium
Pre-match Thoughts – Mike
I'm just running out of superlatives where Town are concerned, as each game comes around you think maybe reality will start to kick in and this incredible journey we find ourselves on will hit a bump in the road and a reality check will hit us and yet game after game, week after week we deliver, we find a way to win when at times it looks unlucky, yes indeed, Kieran McKenna and Co are on One hell of a journey that shows no signs of coming to a halt just yet.
Back track to Saturday and what another incredible result that was, from coming out of the blocks like Linford Christie to build a commanding 3-1 lead to being pegged back to all square and at times looking like we may be turned over. Some of the attacking Football from both clubs was very good indeed while maybe some of the defending not so.
It has been mentioned by a few that Blackburn are the best side we have faced this season and having watched the game back I certainly wouldn’t argue, they look decent and will beat a fair few teams in this division so how pleasing is it that we went toe to toe with them and by the close it was us that had ground out a stunning winner to keep the Tractor rolling along nicely.
We certainly scored some good goals on the day with Clarke, Broadhead and Hirst hitting the target with aplomb but let's also not forget the incredible pass from Cam Burgess which put it on a plate for Hirsty to score, it was sublime, Beckhamesque in fact. If those Three goals weren't good enough just how special was the winning strike from Mass Luongo, incredible strike to win the game and the good thing is is that our goals can come from anywhere in the team. That's now Seven wins from Eight league games to keep us in the automatic promotion places at this early stage.
I didn't see the Wolves game but man what another inspired display from Town, Two down early doors I confess I put my phone away and boogied the night away to the sounds of an excellent Motown tribute band, of course it didn't stay in the pocket for long and much to my surprise all square at the break !!! Cool strikes from Hutchinson and Ladapo getting us back in the game.
Both sides pretty much changed their entire team but still it was us that found a way when reality Says Wolves second string should really be every bit good enough to beat us, a back line of Williams, Baggott, Edmundson and Ball has no right to come out on top and yet we did just that, it shows the strength in depth we have right now
The winning strike was stunning, worthy of a World Cup or European Cup final, take a bow Jack Taylor, what a way to endear yourself to Town fans who had a few doubts, it was pure quality but did anyone clock the build up play from the back with numerous passes to run around the Wolves players? It was excellent. Also credit to Marcus Harness for his hat-trick of assists, he's knocking on the door for sure. So it's the last Sixteen of a cup, does it matter who we draw ? We'll be up for it and confident no matter what.
Its back to League action Saturday with a trip to struggling Huddersfield Town, not easy as always but why should we not fancy ourselves again? With Warnock gone and Huddersfield all at sea off the pitch as well as on it I feel another massive win could be on the cards.
Town's team will no doubt revert back to the A team and they are flying right now, for me it's another happy day for Town as the points come back to Suffolk again. I think Morsy may be suspended? If so Jack Taylor possibly looks to have earned a start, but whoever gets the nod will grab it with both hands. Town win. COYB'S

Another great match preview, much appreciated.
To say we have been flying this season would be a vast understatement. From top to bottom, this club is in such great shape right now. McKenna does a fantastic job getting the best out of his players, and they have really bought into that and playing for each other.
Huddersfield has struggled a lot this season, but at home always seem to play tough. However, I just think we keep on trucking along and get a 2-1 win, Chaplin with the brace.

Hoping for and expecting a win, but Morsy leaves a large hole to fill.

Agree. Although Evans was solid against Wolves. I think we’ll see Evans/Luongo in midfield. Don’t be surprised if Taylor & Harness get the start…and dare I say Ladapo over Hirst. Defensively I can see Edmundson on the bench. I’m not a fan, but he worked hard against Wolves. And once again, remind me what Jackson brings to the squad? Yeah whatever he can run.

No doubt but I think will do enough to get the 3 points even without Sam.

Last season many on here were saying that we were a different team without Morsy, and that we were lost without him - that he was truly indispensible.
That's not the case now, where we have proven that we are a squad rather than just a team, and whoever is played in the 11 gels with the others and we get a great team performance. So I don't agree that Morsy will leave a large hole to fill, and I don't think his absence on Saturday will in any way affect either the performance or the result.

Morsy IS a big loss as he is just class, always one of the best players on the pitch and no doubt an absolute leader off it.
Suspect it’ll be Evans in the Morsy role and masimo in his usual spot.
It could be Masimo moving to the Morsy role and then Taylor comes in.
OR….nobody has suggested it but Ball is a DM by trade….
Either way - there’s options!
Harness won’t start, ladapo might but doubt it - likely the starting line up from last weekend with the change in central midfield.

Was required to view their last five score as had no idea or seen what they've been up to. Results were mixed.
The Norfolk reprobates took a 4 - 0 win there a few games back so it says but all things are subject to change. Bottom line I expect a tough game with no standout winner so one point each seems most probable. Leicester seem the team to beat or get past if we want to challenge at the very top so continued wins for us are of some substantial importance.
Scoring goals is of little issue for ourselves but sometimes find it tough to keep opposition teams out at the other end of field. A high scoring draw seems likely or credible.

We do have options but I still think Morsy is a big loss, he is our leader and without question our best player.

Nice preview from the ship! And yes, was great to read that Harness had the 3 assists. Think he's only really had a chance at L1 level but even then, thought he looked an intelligent, switched on player in the 4 or 5 games witnessed. Hopefully a useful "off the bench" player as others may get those inevitable winter knocks.
Seeing a win here today at the horrendously designed John Smiths, maybe a nice 3-0 or 3-1....., (Hanky does look like a flap-case at times....IMO)
REF & MOORE Caption (News Story)
In a pre game, 3-way "Rock, paper, Scissors" bet for charity, the managers opt for paper: Ref wins big for chosen charity with scissors. Geoff was asked where the proceeds will be going.
He replied, "Its the Varify Foundation, Marko."
"Can you shed some light on this?"
"Well, yes, we do sometimes need things to be verified, but we get them varified now."
"And the difference is?"
"Well, with the varify system, we can see a pinkie fingernail touch the ball in the 90 +25 minute, so its fair and its all for the good of the game."
"My goodness, that accurate? Wow. Soon if the ball ruffles arm hair it'll be a freekick."
"Well Marko, we are campaigning for a sending off in that particular scenario."
"Thanks for speaking with us Geoff......, you feckin robot!"
"Cheers Marko. I'll take that as a compliment."
"Yeah, whatever, Geoff."

That said I’m very happy to see Hutchinson get a start and think it’s well deserved and won’t be surprised to see his name on the score sheet.

Oh well, that's 5 points I'll be missing out on in the prediction league for first assist!

The right side of our defence is yet again open all hours . Hardly surprising Huddersfield are targeting that area ( all teams seem too)

I thought we left rubbish refereeing in League 1, but how was that foul on Hutchinson not a penalty.

Hladky must be our MOTM so far. Harry Clarke looking vulnerable being run at again. I don’t think it will be long before he loses his place to Brandon Williams.
One goal may well decide this game.
