Pre Match Thoughts - Mike

Well that went well didn't it !!! Hot on the heels of the disappointing showing at West Ham Town turned in another below par and uninspiring performance at home to struggling Everton, a game that was billed as a must win by a lot of Town fans turned into anything but as by the close we were comfortably defeated by One of our fellow strugglers. It wasn't only the final result that left us all deflated but also the manner of the performance which in truth wasn't great and has started to raise more than a few eyebrows among the Town faithful.

From a personal perspective Saturday began full of hope and expectation, it just felt right and that first win seemed to be on the cards, alas my positivity diminished while sitting in the pub prior to kick off as the team news filtered through at 1.45pm, the dreaded rumours that Jacob Greaves had picked up an injury proved to be correct and adding that to the absence of Axel Tuanzebe just felt like it was a bridge too far, then you look at the pairing of Luke Woolfenden & Cameron Burgess and it has to be said, it filled me with dread, at that point I predicted a Two Nil defeat and so it proved.

The early season optimism is very quickly evaporating, those early season draws that seemed so positive feel like a Million miles away, we needed a reaction after the West Ham drubbing but instead we got a bit of a damp squib of a performance which certainly had me feeling a bit like we are out of our depth at this level, Eight League games without a win doesn't sound good and the pressure is most definitely starting to mount.

I suppose you can take positives from the game if you look hard enough, we had a Golden opportunity to go ahead early on when Jack Clarke was played in but with the goal gaping he blasted high and wide with no composure whatsoever, he had time to take a touch too but instead lashed at it recklessly and the chance was gone. Having gone behind after yet another defensive howler had gifted them the lead we then get awarded a penalty and with it the ideal chance to get back on level terms but the dreaded VAR review decided otherwise as the decision was overturned and I have to say having seen it back it was correctly overturned as Clarke had not been fouled at all.

After that our chances were few and far between and going in Two behind following Everton's second goal not long before half time made the task virtually impossible and if we are honest Jordan Pickford barely had a save of note to make for the entire second period which for me was bitterly disappointing. Let's be honest Everton were not great, they did however seem far more streetwise than us and looked far more capable of grinding out a result than we did.

The same issues remain for me, playing Hutchinson in the Middle does not work, for the last Twenty Minutes or so he played wide Right and looked a different player, almost immediately he looked more dangerous and was involved in quite a bit going forward, again Sammy Szmodics was on the bench and used sparingly with little time to impress, I did feel Jack Taylor & Harry Clarke did well when they came on and looked better alternatives to O'Shea & Phillips who had been poor all afternoon.

I think it speaks volumes that by the close of play we had the majority of our League One side on the pitch and this after spending 100 Million is a cause for concern, the old guard looked far more up for it and far more effective, it begs the question, have we spent badly and are some of these lower league players adapting enough to life in the Premier League, I would question it at this moment in time. One player does not make a team but losing Greaves for a few weeks is huge and I genuinely do not see us winning a game in his absence as the back up defenders are just not good enough ans by the time Greaves & Axel return it could well be too late, the errors have not been coached out of our defence for Two years now and I don't see it changing.

I think we have NO choice but to switch tactics and formation etc, try something different, we are predictable and One dimensional and that has to change, Mckenna has been the Messiah for over Two years now but it will quickly be eroded away and forgotten if we keep doing the same old thing with the same old negative outcome, the days of worrying if we can keep hold of him are fast disappearing which I guess is a good thing, or is it, if we get say Fifteen games into the season with no wins questions will be asked and his position will be questioned, and rightly so.

All we can do is keep working hard and hope the improvement we need starts to manifest itself into performances. I never thought I would see to day that we head to Brentford thinking we have little chance of a result here but that is how I am feeling right now, they are no mugs and can play a bit too, Brentford is the type of club we currently aspire to be but at present we look a long way off that level. They currently sit in Mid table with Ten points from the opening Eight games and already have some positive results to their name, they recently put Five past Wolves which on the face of it may not sound anything special but what would we give for that kind of result against anyone right now ? We couldn't even do it against Wimbledon in the cup.

I really like Brentford's manager too who seems to have a good thing going there, Thomas Frank has worked wonders and has them playing some good stuff in the right way, Mbeumo has already plundered Six goals and with a 53% shot accuracy will be a real hand full for our generous defence, it worries me how our depleted numbers are going to contain him. Going forward we also need to be creating far more than we are and when those golden chances do come along we have to take them, something we are not doing at present, a combination of errors at the back and missed chances going forward is a recipe for disaster and this has to stop.

Let's be honest here though, this season was always going to be tough and a scrap for survival, 17th was always a realistic target, it is easy to criticise and find negatives but let's all remember what our hopes and aspirations were before the season, we as a club are learning, individual players are learning and most definitely still trying to adapt to life in the Premiership while at the same time striving to gel with their new team mates, our Manager is a rookie and still learning too, he hasn't done too badly in fairness but does need to lose that stubborn tendancy that seems to be there, I am certain he knows only too well when the time is right to try something different, for me that time is very much upon us. What we have to do though is stick with the boys and keep positive, anything less will make the job Ten times harder. I fear it will be another defeat this weekend but you just never know. COYB'S.

On the surface, this match looks like a thumping I’m afraid. If KM doesn’t change tactics, we could lose by 4,5,6 goals. With all the conversations about players being played out of position, the one thing that sets in my mind is we have no midfield presence. The formation isn’t working in this league. I’ll refrain from predicting the score, but I think all of us will know the outcome if nothing changes in the starting line up.

With our injuries at the back and our last 2 performances can only see a Brentford win. Just hope it is not too large a defeat as our minus goal difference is already getting worse each week.

Brentford like to score early, and we love to concede early.

If we're not careful it could be game over well before half time.

I'm not too downhearted, the step-up in class is massive, we have a stubborn inexperienced manager, and our squad has limited PL experience, so I wasn't expecting much this season, although I did think we would have enough about us to stay up. That may yet be the case, but we need to see a big changearound.

As far as this game goes, I think that most well rounded people would not be able to see beyond a home win - I think I'm fairly well rounded, so Brentford 3 - Ipswich 0.

Cannot believe we're not in the drop zone, but we can't continue to rely on other teams doing equally poorly. I'm dreading this game, I simply see too many flaws in the team to get a result, though happy to be wrong.

Leicester and Palace games at home in the next half dozen games are now huge matches.

If Hutchinson starts in the middle, I will not be held accountable for my actions

Brentford is the side I see most of and I was there when they put 5 past Wolves and also when they drew with West Ham. They have a great spirit and to my mind are a much better side without Toney. They have been playing without Wissa who has been injured but I think he'll be back on Saturday which does make them stronger going forward as the partnership of him and Mbeumo is a very effective one but to be honest their results this season have slightly flattered them. They are vulnerable defensively although good in the air. Their two centre backs aren't the quickest and should be attacked on the ground and their midfield although hard working haven't much impressed me so far. Where they are strong is in their set pieces ,especially when Pinnock and Collins get forward . They are a handful in the air. They have been getting early goals but ,apart from the Wolves game, they haven't been particularly high scoring and Wolves were awful. If we had our full squad to pick from I'd fancy us to get something out of the game. I do think we'll score so will go for a 2-1 defeat with a chance of a draw.

Thank you for this valuable insight RR 👍.

Having had 2 games where most Town fans felt we could stand a chance of picking up 3 points, we now feel rather deflated and in truth most fans appear to be looking at a narrow defeat at best. For me, this could actually play into our hands!

Don't get me wrong, they have a canny manager and certainly like a very early goal. It will be another very testing match, make no bones about it. This will be especially so if confidence is starting to wither!
Delap I'm sure will delight against 2 CBs who "aren't the quickest". Maybe this is where a centrally positioned Hutchinson can use his trickery? Is this what KM is trying to develop in him? Whatever the forward combination we do need to start creating and then converting more chances.
I'm not one for making changes, and while we've used a lot of players so far, perhaps getting players used to playing in a certain way (don't forget that I think KM said it may be a bit of time before we saw the best of his new squad). I do however wonder with the personnel we have missing, whether the 3 at the back, which was tried during pre-season, might be the best way forward?
It seems that Muric generally is dominant in the air (from his stats). We know that Burgess and O'Shea are also good in that department and therefore would counter the threat Brentford pose there. Maybe someone can confirm how many aerial errors we have made this season which lead to a goal, as opposed to the glaring ones where the ball is on the ground (I can only think of Olly Watkins goal).
So alongside the two aforementioned CBs, I'd have Wolfie, with O'Shea as the centre pin. Davis & Johnson (only because I think Clarke could come on 2nd half again to build up his fitness) could then play on the wing, therefore supporting defence or midfield according to who is in possession. The rest of the team I think I'd have as; Davis/Clarke and Johnson/Burns or Hutchinson to overlap each other. Due to the extra defensive player in this formation, I would possibly drop Phillips for Taylor to help link up play better. (Yes, I suddenly realised we'd have 12 players lol) But then again, what do I know!

That's bad news, with the defence we have remaining, it's not looking good, unless the midfield gives cover.

For the Brentford game I'd be inclined to go with

Clarke.......O'Shea......Burgess......Davis

If you look at Evertons goals, both stem from weak " headers" from Woolfenden. He cant header a ball, and never has been able to.

I think the first one was O’Shea and the second Burgess? Could be wrong.
The fact is we have been left very exposed at the back by injury. Phillips isn’t really working at the moment. Hutchinson and Burns both have their strengths (dribbling in Hutchinson’s case, pace in Burns’) but we need to play one or the other wide right.
I’ve said many times before you get promotion by being able to attack; you stay up by being about to defend. KMK has done brilliantly but we haven’t defended well as a team for two years really. He just doesn’t know how to build a team with defensive qualities. He will learn - but I don’t think it will be soon enough to keep us up.

I think Mckenna almost needs to revert to last years front line. They KNOW each others game so well. He's not even tired that yet! But of course he won't.

Id watch the highlights of the Everton goals as they were at the opposite rbd to where I stand. But I thought I saw Woolfie fail to clear effectively in the build up to both goals. If I've got it wrong, then its apologies to him from me.

I am going on Saturday (new ground for me) and looking forward to it. I am expecting to lose but have a sneaking feeling that when our backs are against the wall, it is just the type of fixture where we may get something. I hope so but have not bet the farm on it... 🤞

Liz, your Woolfie fixation is getting worse lol 😆
O'Shea mucked up for the first with pathetic weak header, Burns then gifted them the goal.

For the second Burgess (who was once again woeful) mucked up twice, conceded the corner which was unnecessary then messed up his clearance, it really was pathetic. I also question how Muric can ve beaten at his near post with such a tight angle like that, also poor.

Lol....  well he was in the team, so it HAS to be his fault dunnit, and both goals came on the right side of defence where he is, he didnt close down their player with the ball for their second , he just stood still, marking fresh air, like he always does, which is why the keeper got beaten at his near post,!! Lol

Yes, you do. Also, we never " attack" dead ball situations either in defence of attack. We're very passive I think. We need to be much more aggressive defensively....

I think we need to be more aggressive all over the pitch. We're too slow and predictable. There's not enough movement off the ball to find space and be open for a pass. We don't even move very well for throw ins. The one thing we do consistently...bad...is attempt to play the ball out from the back more often than not putting us under instant pressure.

As BM says, where's the coaching? I haven't seen consistent, quick, touch-and-go passing in most of our matches. The only player who finds players without hesitation is Morsy and maybe Davis. All the others (including Hutch) look clueless most of the time.

And back to your point about the defence being more aggressive. I think you're right and they need to be more confident going forward, moving the ball quickly to the midfield. I really can't stand this stagnant playing the ball out from the back stuff. How many times do the defenders hold on to the ball too long and then pass in desperation to someone who's under pressure. That's usually when the keystone cops come out and we start to panic. Yeah, I get the tactic don't worry...but, I said before you have to have the players to execute otherwise, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

We can't do much about our defence. It is what it is now, but....

My hope is McKenna tries a front line of

Hirst
Broadhead or Burns
Chaplin or Szmodics
Omari or Delap
