Pre Match Thoughts - Mike

After positive results and decent performances against both Spurs & Manchester Utd I have to say I was expecting rather more from Town as we made the trip to the City ground to take on surprise package Nottingham Forest. by the close of play I found myself a bit disappointed that we had once again gifted our opponents the points thanks to some lacklustre play, particularly in the second half, and a very soft and totally unnecessary penalty just after half time.

It's certainly not like Town to lack energy and intensity but certainly looked the case from where I was sitting, ok the first half wasn't too bad as we went toe to toe with them and by the break the game was very even although it has to be said we had fashioned the Two best chances with the Cameron Burgess header off the line and the mix up between Liam Delap & Conor Chaplin when the latter looked certain to score but in fairness to Forest they too had openings so honours even at the break was about right.

It was the second Forty five that really disappointed me, we had got ourselves into a fab position, the crowd were quiet, we had a foothold in the game and we were causing them problems, particularly from Omari Hutchinson who again looked right on top of his game, so how frustrating was it to concede such a pointless and dare I say it soft penalty kick so early in the second half, it changed the whole afternoon as the crowd got fired up, Forest sat a little more deeper and eventually changed formation to shut up shop while we just didn't create anything of any worthwhile note for the remaining 40 Minutes, yes we huffed and puffed but the quality and the creativity was sadly lacking. Liam Delap basically had no service to work with, Hutchinson started to tire, Szmodics and Chaplin struggled to produce much and the substitutions just didn't look good enough on this occasion.

While I accept it was a penalty just how annoying is that diving little runt Jota ? time and time again he was throwing himself to the floor so theatrically that it was embarrassing, he wasn't the only One either, and to read Cameron Burgess say the ref probably gave the spot kick due to his squealing like a pig says it all for me, that said we gave him the opportunity to take advantage and he did just that, maybe there is a case for us getting a bit more streetwise from now on.

Aside from Hutchinson I have to say Muric in Town's goal was the best of the Bunch for us, he looked assured, his handling and timing was on point and most of the time he relieved the pressure on his defence when it was needed, if only the consistency was there the flack he gets would definitely disappear, here's hoping because we are going to need him big time. The upshot of the result is that we are still encamped in the bottom Three but thankfully results elsewhere went our way and it is still oh so very tight down there, a couple of wins would change everything and that brings us to this coming week !!!!

Please don't anybody tell me that no game is a must win because Tuesday's home game with Crystal palace is exactly that, we simply have to win it, they are down there with us and on the same points, when you look at the fixture list not too many shout out to you as town wins but this one does and we need to get the result, it would in all probability take us out of the drop zone going into Bournemouth on Sunday which is another I feel we can get something from at the very least, at home we are good enough to take on most teams and we have to make that pay.

Palace are showing signs of waking up as their injury situation eases a bit so it still won't be easy but we have to stop coming up with the hard luck stories and start winning Football matches, this week could be massive for us, in fact December looks vital for our chances with Wolves & Newcastle to come to, it simply has to yield points and with probable new faces arriving in January we could actually be looking at a much healthier situation, but of course we have to go and get the job done, no more silly red cards, or penalties or flat performances, we need high intensity and energy which is normally our strong point, anything less will not be enough.

I wish we could get Jacob Greaves back as for me he makes a huge difference and we also need to hope Axel Tuanzebe is not injured again as that too would be a big blow to our chances. town's Twelfth man need to be in good voice and loud on Tuesday as it makes such a difference, with Southampton still struggling and Leicester City currently in freefall, putting Palace to the sword would be massive for us so come on Town show us how much you want it and get the job done. No iff's or but's it's a Town win for me. COYB'S

Only just had chance to see the highlights from last game.

Must win really this one - won’t be easy though at all.

I think Greaves may come in and maybe J Clark as a bit of rotation might be called for after a short gap between games.

Any updates on the injuries?

Good review and yes, with Newcastle, Arsenal & Chelsea coming up end of the month, Palace, Bournemouth and Wolves have to be 9 points. Think the Palace game is MORE of a must win as Bournemouth will be trickier imo.

And this part....

time and time again he was throwing himself to the floor so theatrically that it was embarrassing, he wasn't the only One either, and to read Cameron Burgess say the ref probably gave the spot kick due to his squealing like a pig says it all for me,

...., Is why myself and a few buddies do not own season tickets anymore. Won't pay to watch cheating. Because that is exactly what they're doing.

Go for 3-0 ITFC, Chappers to get a correlation of assists & goals!

Ref: "Jeezo Oliver, your eyes are HUGE!"
Oliver: "They are. You won't need VAR. I see everything."

I’d like to be positive, but the cards are against us. We’ve now lost Tuanzebe arguably our most talented defender. We have one healthy striker in Delap. Phillips and Greaves won’t be 100 percent if even fit to play, and this is a Tuesday match after an away game at the city ground, so legs will still be sore. I think Palace will beat us comfortably.

However, we’re Ipswich Town so there’s also the chance that we’ll come out fighting and take the 3 points!

On paper we’re doomed, but I’m not giving up yet although my heart says a loss.

Really? My finger must be a ways off the pulse at the moment. Comfortably? At Portman Road? Crystal Palace? 🤔🤷‍♂️

I've just noticed Palace are the lowest scorers in the Division with 11 goals, we simply have to keep it tight at the back and not gift them any silly goals or penalties, we have to win this game.

yes it's definitely a must win, no doubt about that.

We ought to win, but Palace can be dangerous so it's not cut and dried.

If I felt confident that Burns will not be starting then I'd have no hesitation in predicting a win - but I think he will start so I'm going for 1-1

If we play like we have at home so far, I think we will win. The lads know what is required. 3-1 Town. COYB's!

So far we have played 3 teams in our mini-league at the bottom end of the table and taken just 2 points from these games. We have to start picking up wins in these crucial games if we hope to pull away from the relegation zone. Tonight we have the opportunity to get a win against one of those teams in our mini-league and also our first home win this season.
If I was putting money on the result think I would go for a 1-1 draw but as I’m not I will go for a 2-1 win for Town.

Just hope Delap is ok for tonight as he took quite a heavy knock on Saturday and was limping for a while afterwards. I notice that McKenna said in his pre-match press conference that a few players are being monitored, hope Delap is not one of them.

There is a lot of stuff being said today that is just WOW ......, Palace win comfortably and if Delap doesn't play, its also a loss? Again, WOW! I think if Delap is out, the management re-jig and its over to Smods, Hutch and Chappers. I mean Liam Delap is very good but is he the sole answer to beat Palace at PR tonight?

Obviously stand to be majorly corrected......, but fkn hell....., strong stuff on here today.

Edit to add: It's a team I just do not follow at all. Looking at their last 5 results further up the preview, the only game of the 5 that you'd maybe reckon they should win is Fulham @ home --->> and that's the only one they lost. So maybe they're a decent side. Still think ITFC should be winning it, regardless of Villa & the magpies failing last 2 outings.

Marko, he's not the sole answer but he's pretty much the sole goal threat MOST of the time, nobody else has any physical strength to trouble most teams CB's, if he doesn't play we'll lose.

Is it not relative to the old days though? Mariner injured, and thats when you saw guys like Osman or Muhren scoring? SBR re-jigged. Can it not happen at Ipswich Town these days, bearing in mind its all relative to “era”?

Im not going against your opinion, not at all. I just think it’s a shame that there are fans who think it’ll all be f*cked if one player goes down. I know he’s the main threat, but maybe a shuffle and Hutch bags a few? 🤷‍♂️

Yep, bit of an unusual starting 11, especially Burns & J Clarke starting.

Kieron....., if you read the forum and you're trying pi$$ Rossi off with Wes in the team......, then why not play "Champ Man"......, get Delap AND Smods up front and win 7-0

He looked very average in the 8 minutes of Forest highlights. I suppose they're given time to try again instead of launched under a bus. Big second half coming up.

No HT subs? Judging by the first half stats...., quite surprised at that. Maybe he is relying on his words of wisdom which usually work.
