Denis Law

Post by Shed on tour » Fri Jan 17, 2025 8:45 pm

Has passed away at the age of 84. The first time I saw him play live was back in the 1967-68 season against Spurs at White Hart Lane. Some players on view that day, Law, Best and Charlton for United. Chivers, Gilzean and Greaves for Spurs.
RIP Dennis

Yes - very sad. One of the best instinctive strikers ever and part of the Old Trafford 'trilogy' of Law, Best and Charlton - when Man Utd really were 'greats' - now sadly all gone 🙁

I must have seen him play at Portman Road four or five times the most memorable when they walloped us in the year we were relegated from the old Division One, I think he scored a hat-trick.

I also saw him playing for Scotland at Wembley in 1967 when they beat England 2-3 which was our first defeat after winning the World Cup the previous year. It was my first ever visit to Wembley and there are chunks of it I can remember like it was yesterday not least the 30,000 strong Tartan Army that were everywhere over London before and after the crazy game of end to end football. After the final whistle they invaded the pitch and took chunks of turf home with them, I’d never before seen fans anything like it.

What a player he was and looking back now I count myself lucky to have seen the team of Best Law & Charlton etc play many times as every year me and my best friends went to Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea v Man United as a special treat as these were our two favourite teams at the time after Ipswich of course. Luckily my auntie & uncle lived a stones throw from the ground and always arranged it for us from a very young age circa 12/13 onwards. I can’t believe now that we used to go on the train alone and thought nothing of it sometimes staying overnight after the game and coming back the next day. In fact me and my mate, still an Ipswich fan, occasionally still talk about it.

George Best, Bobby Charlton and now Denis Law, that’s all three gone. What a trio, RIP you great guys, you will never be forgotten. 🌹🌹🌹

That's a real shame. People of a certain age won't comprehend or appreciate how good or talented the player were but back then and for a time Law was immense. Scotland's record scorer at national level although 30 goals is it doesn't seem enough for a player that holds such a statistic. Believe featured in West Germany 1974 in the twilight of a career and Scots didn't lose a game of all things if memory holds out but by then Law was simply beyond his absolute best and with it, players around him that were weaker than years ahead or before.

Think he was Jim Greaves favorite player, the two featured around the same time and there was real competition between the two both at domestic and international level. Bergkamp's parent's wanted to name him after Law (I) read at some time or another but had to include two D's so not to infringe on the player himself. How much would Law of say 1965 be worth today ? Astronomical would be a word for it or maybe you just can't put price on it.

Respect and condolences to the family.
