yes Andy, Well Done, 5pts,I always remember watching that match, it was closer than the result suggests ,
I was lucky to get tickets to go and watch Pele play for Santos at Fulham one night in London with my late Dad, (Town fan)

Re: NEW QUIZ, Name the match
Match …………………………..v………………………………
Date…………………………………
CLUE .1.
The home side was about to play their 7th game in the competition, after drawing the away tie.
The two managers R…G….&…J…H…Take their seats in the dugout.
The two captains …T…G….&…B..M….meet in the middle to toss the coin for the kick off,
The referee from Cannock blows his whistle to kick off in front of a full house,
This replay had been postponed three times due to a flooded pitch.
The rain had made the pitch very slippery and both sides struggled, in the first 45 minutes.
Half Time Score 0-0.

Re: NEW QUIZ, Name the match
I think the answer is:
Hereford United 2-1 Newcastle United (aet)
5 February 1972
FA Cup 3rd Round Replay.
The two managers initials don’t fit though ?
Colin Addison Hereford & Joe Harvey Newcastle United

Re: NEW QUIZ, Name the match
Although listed as a friendly this was probably instrumental in creating a major tournament.
The two managers ….. & J.K shake hands and take their seats in the dug out
The two captains exchange pennants and toss the coin for kick off.
It was a cold wet winters evening the match kicked of in front of over 55,000 fans,
The first half saw the away team take an 2-0 lead in the first 15 mins.
Half Time 0-2

Re: NEW QUIZ, Name the match
Insufficient info for me John, will need to take another look later.
It’s probably post late 50’s early 60’s which is when floodlights were installed.
Not many clubs would attract 50k plus crowds.
The only manager I can think of with initials JK is Joe Kinnear who at that time wasn’t even playing let alone managing.
Probably need Clue 2.

your working out was brilliant Andy,
CLUE.2.
it was a very iconic match in the history of football.
the 2nd half kicked of under the lights which had been installed earlier.
in the 49th minute the home side pulled one back from the penalty spot, this remained the score until within just two minutes the home side scored two more goals via the centre forward W..S...to make it 3-2.
Result 3-2.
forty years later they staged this match again after the death of the manager of one of the sides,

Re: NEW QUIZ, Name the match
this should help solve the match
CLUE 3.
Both teams had won their respected leagues that season,
Rumours were the staff and apprentices were sent out to water the pitch at half time
to stop the away sides fluent passing. Which included an apprentice called Ron Atkinson
After the win the home side were declared "champions of the world"
The away side included 7 players (including One of the world greats going by the name of F.P. ). who only the year before the country had made history,

Re: NEW QUIZ, Name the match
Took me a While George Best had me thinking Manchester United but a bit of digging on Google revealed he left them for Dunstable
