Re: Video Assistant Referee (VAR) System - Thoughts guys ?
Technology’s boundaries will continue to expand, and it’s possibilites become infinite - at least in theory. Whilst the rules governing what is a fairly simple game are unlikely to change radically. Overlaying additional electronic scrutiny, which demands a human interface and time to interpret its output, and which may never be sufficiently fine-tuned to achieve it’s aim, might be seen as football’s power brokers wanting to demonstrate their willingness to be progressive by imposing something of a tech sledge-hammer to crack a comparatively small (contentious decisions) nut. But in so doing changing the game’s nature and ethos - mistakes and all - as the price to pay for clinical certainty.
I think, ultimately, VAR will be quietly abandoned!

Not sure this could be implemented in the English game. Isn't part of each weekend an opportunity to berate or question match officials decisions ? If this new practice was put into effect it could eradicate the aforementioned scenarios to a potentially considerable extent.

Even with fantastic VAR in place, the ref will still be a c**t. So no worries there, Saint.

Now ye see, what’s the issue with that? Go to the pie stall for another 3 pies AND the players get a breather!herforder wrote:‘Oh sh*t, the fuc*ing screen’s gone blank’. ‘Just guess, like you always used to......’!

Give each team one referral and once a challenge is lost that's it. It would also curb ref abuse because ref can say " are you using referral ? If not get on with game.
It would stop players appealing for everything. Also players should appeal for a penalty, this would stop blatant diving and cheating.

Herforder with respect I think we can be sure that you are wrong. It's going to be at the world cup! And the screens are going to be shown inside the stadiums (and to the world). That decision surely means that it's here to stay. Can you imagine the TV audience NOT wanting to see the VAR screens? Seriously? We can discuss it at the time it happens. That makes it more interesting.
IMO it's just about smoothing out the (not always minor) kinks.

Andy you can't give teams referrals, how would they decide? How many times will they stop the game and debate it on the pitch then decide against the referral. What will the other team be doing when they are conferringAndo wrote:Give each team one referral and once a challenge is lost that's it. Acknowledge that it’s going to be used in the World Cup - see that as a strategic trial, not nailed on certainty that it’s here to stay for everyone. So far as i’m aware, the EPL has decided against it’s introduction for next season. Chelsea and Man U definitely not in favour. Time and experience will tell in the end!Dubai Blue wrote:Herforder with respect I think we can be sure that you are wrong. It's going to be at the world cup! You ever shared a hymn sheet at a funeral with some b*stard with "death" breath? Thankfully the wife now brushes her teeth also.

It's simple a player knows when he has touched the ball last or the ball has been handled or a shot has been deflected and a goal kick is given.Dubai Blue wrote:Andy you can't give teams referrals, how would they decide? On judgement calls the decision would still lie with the ref. If someone appeals for a pen and there's contact but the ref decides it's not a foul you would not lose your review.

Re: Video Assistant Referee (VAR) System - Thoughts guys ?
And that's all fine but as we can see with other sports where referrals are possible, it is often not so easy for the team to decide if they are going to refer, given that the captain is the one who must order the referral then he wold need to discuss with the player who is at the point where the action takes place. Are we going to stop the game for that and then have many occasions when after the delay the team decides not to use a referral? Once you introduce restricted referrals then players will be told not to appeal for decisions in case this is taken as a signal to refer, as referrals will be come a tactical part of the game.Ando wrote:It's simple a player knows when he has touched the ball last or the ball has been handled or a shot has been deflected and a goal kick is given.Dubai Blue wrote:Andy you can't give teams referrals, how would they decide? Why should football be any different to other sports it works well in rugby and hockey that are both fast team sports that have decisions open to interpretation.
The game needs to stop players appealing for things they know they should not get. The ref gets most things right so I'm not that sure the game would stop that much. Players generally get the best view so will know if a decision is wrong or missed.
