Every now and again a Town player makes history

Today, or right now in probable fact, 30 years again this moment Town were featured at a league game at Anfield. Few gave us much chance but somehow took away a 1 - 0 victory with Adam Tanner scoring that goal. Recollection from that day seems hazy. You can recount the goal, the adulation in victory - we had pulled off a result few could have imagined - but the game itself only comes back in vague flashes. The team won two games only away from Portman Road all season long, this was one of them. More often than not we'd suffer a beating on the road or see heavy defeat but this one occasion produced something quite different.

That same week and around about now there was a Cup defeat at lower league Wrexham and first time exit you can recall, lo and behold the team is able to win at Liverpool a game or two thereafter. The Old Trafford game was still some weeks away but for this moment at least you could take pride or certain satisfaction at a standout win elsewhere.

While Tanner scored it, it's about all some can remember the player for while here. Just didn't work out for him with us and in later seasons would decline into something of disrepute or grab headlines for all wrong reasons but for one moment on the field alone, could almost claim cult status. Tanner would inexplicably be left out of the trip to Manchester United by Burley soon after and the rest is history. If only he'd been included in that (the) result may have been something else.
