Pre-Match Thoughts - Mike

Wow !! Just wow !! If anybody connected to ITFC didn't enjoy that then I would be looking for something else to do on a Saturday afternoon, what an incredible game of Football that was, action packed, exciting from start to finish, drama right until the very last second, Two penalties, Five goals and an excellent display by the boys in Blue that thoroughly deserved the Three points, yes it had it all and by the close our dominant display had secured the win against another of the so called promotion rivals.

i must confess prior to kick off I looked at the Line up and questioned Kiran McKenna's thought process, a couple of things I just did not get, and to be fair I still think a couple of decisions were baffling to say the least but when One is served up with that 90+ minutes of great entertainment and with it the right outcome how can anyone question him, this is why he does what he does and I am a mere fan of the club.

Town came out like a rocket and took the game to Pompey from the off, so much so they barely had a touch of any note and by the time that man Marcus Harness had put us one up we could have already been ahead, the celebration from Marcus said it all while the chants from the Sir Bobby Robson stand of "he left cus your'e sh*te" were amusing to say the least. As it often is with us we contrive to give them a way back into the game and a team that had offered little are gifted a penalty totally against the run of play, George Edmundson, Luke Woolfenden & Christian Walton should all feel they can do a lot better as it was a collective f*ck up that caused the concession of yet another totally avoidable goal for the opposition.

Going in on level terms was tough to take as that had been a very good Forty Five minutes from Town, with the exception of the error for the penalty of course and for the opening minutes of the Second half we failed to carry on that domination as the game became a bit stop start and scrappy, due in no small part to the tactics of Pompey who were clearly overjoyed at the prospect of going home with a flukey point, the time wasting, which had started as early as the first quarter of the game continued whenever the opportunity arose and you could sense the Town players and fans getting frustrated. It was time for our leader to step up, change it and most importantly, get it right !!!

He didn't disappoint, talk about impact substitutions, with literally his first touch of the game following his arrival Freddie Ladapo curled a beautiful effort past the stranded keeper to restore Town's lead, Freddie had gone from villain to hero in seconds as the place erupted and the players celebrated to a man, it was a great move and finish from Town and surely now we could go on and win a game that Portsmouth had offered absolutely nothing in. Inexplicably the Referee again points to the spot after a coming together between Morsy and One of their Olympic Diving team, a hush descended over the ground as most could not believe what they were seeing, one second euphoria and the next disbelief as Bishop stepped up for the second time to send Walton the wrong way from the spot. talk about a sense of injustice, not to mention Deja Vu, it felt like it wasn't going to be our day once again.

What followed moments later was just too much to take in, Ladapo wins a challenge and sends Edwards away down the left, he jinxes his way past a defender or two before delivering a cross right under the bar for Wes Burns to head over the line, the net ripples and the place goes into absolute deafening meltdown, with Burns and co punching the air in front of the North Stand, the fans are going delirious, people around us were up and down the aisles, hugging total strangers and generally going ballistic, it was a feeling I hadn't felt for a long long time. Once it had settled down you just sensed this was, for a change going to be our day in a big encounter, and so it proved as we saw the game out with little fuss.

I have to say I have not enjoyed a day like that at Portman Road for longer than I care to remember and as the players came up to applaud the fans you could not help but feel that sense of great pride being restored that this is "my club" and they are back, albeit in a lower league than we care to think about. I am not gonna lie, I love the fact we also rammed it down that gobshite Cowley's throat, what a nasty individual he is, and judging by what I saw on the day, the fans were right, Marcus Harness did leave because they are sh*te.

If Tuesday night is half as good we are in for another treat as Cambridge Utd come calling, they too have had a decent start to the campaign and caused us problems last season, Saturday must be forgotten and we must take this game on its own merits because it won't be easy, far from it but these days I struggle to contemplate anything other than a Town win, especially the way we performed against Sheff wed, Plymouth & Portsmouth, we look better than all of them so nobody in this league should worry us but of course complacency is our biggest enemy as we know only to well.
I think we will have too much for Cambridge but it could be a tight affair as they will probably come to frustrate and pick up whatever scraps we decide to give them. so it's another Three points for me and a possible return to the summit of the League One table, oh how I am loving my Football again. Nice write up Frosty, times like this wish I lived closer as id go tomorrow night, but have got my iFollow pass so that will have to do, and a beer of course.

Sounds like it is going to be a bumper crowd and reckon they are in for another treat.

Can see a drubbing for the wasp lookalikes tomorrow.

4 - 1 to the boys in blue!

I simply can’t wait for tomorrow nights game but there’s no room for complacency against a team that took four points off us last season including their 0-1 win at Portman Road. This season after a good start recent results haven’t gone so well for them apart from a 1-2 win at Morecambe, so it looks like we’ve picked a good time to meet them. If Kieron McKenna has the team as well prepared as he did on Saturday against Portsmouth I can only see a convincing win 2-0 or more possibly 3-0.

Apparently we lost in April to Cambridge directly after we beat Plymouth, where we were also on a high. Hopefully, no slip-ups like that. Just get the job done and would be happy with a scrappy 1-0.

Enjoyable to read Mike's experience on Saturday - sounds like an amazing atmosphere and a game to remember. It had all the ingredients.

Like Tang I’m a bit wary. Not just complacency but we’ve just had a run of 3 very tough games. An early goal will help as it might stop the opposition from trying to frustrate.
Expecting a 2-0 victory but a draw wouldn’t surprise me.

I think the next 2 matches will see some rotation, I think Edwards will get a start for Harness either tonight or at the weekend.
Also suspect Keogh will be handed a start soon.

Ball will get minutes but off the bench, possible KVY too, likely to protect Davies if we are leading.

I think were in for a frustrating evening . They will come to spoil and certainly not look to play football against us . That'd be suicide wouldn't it. Bit of time wasting , say from the first 5 mins throughout the game , rising to ridiculous , unchallenged by the ref, levels, in the second half.

Draw 1-1

I pray I've got this oh so wrong ...

The problem is Liz, if you don’t think we’re good enough to win games against mid table opposition who don’t let us play, you’re as good as saying you don’t think we’re good enough for promotion this season. There will be many games where clubs come to Portman Road with the sole intention of spoiling our game, getting huge numbers behind the ball, playing for the draw , and hoping to catch us on the break and maybe steal all three points.
I think we have have a squad with enough options pace and fire power to deal with this. If you don’t think we have and I’m wrong and you’re right we will simply miss out on promotion again and stay confined to League 1. We just have to find ways of beating stubborn opponents, and I think with McKenna and the squad he’s put together we’re better equipped to deal with it than we were last season. My god let’s hope so.

Think best bet is to fly out the traps and score an early goal, force them into playing, then it will get interesting.

Or get a set piece and hope we convert it.

2-0 win

Plymouth v Sheff Weds tonight, hoping that one is a draw.
Yea BB, anything other than a Plymouth win and we could be back Top of the Table again tonight. How good would that be.

Well we've won 3 and drawn 2 of our 5 home League matches, the Bolton draw was cus of a soft pen after we'd outplayed them and the Barnsley draw was cus of an inept official so we are dealing with what is thrown at us, its stopping individual errors and crap refs which are the real issues.

To be honest Mike there doesn’t appear to be many decent refs operating in this League or not from what I’ve seen. Do you think it’s because of the size of the stadium and the noise of the fans that we get more than our fair share of poor decisions ?… surely they can’t make the same number of bad decisions every week or they’d be dropped. I’m just guessing it must be very different for them refereeing games at the likes of Derby, Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich compared with the relative quietness at Accrington Stanley, Forest Green of Burton Albion with only circa 3000 fans in the ground. Maybe there should be grades of referee within each league where the most experienced looking to progress to the next level should officiate at the biggest games.

I do think the size of the crowd/stadium/club has a bearing yes, its no coincidence that in the McKenna interview which Azzuro posted KM also raises the issue and makes the point we are owed a few decisions to go our way.

The strange thing is in the Premier League it often appears that the bigger clubs are generally on the right side of the big decisions although this could have changed with the introduction of VAR.

I do wonder if Kieran McKenna's quiet demeanour works against us in this instance, imagine a Warnock or Klopp snapping at the officials, I'm sure it makes a difference and influences desicions at times.

Reading online it sounds like the ground could be half empty, I'm reading the Cambridge team bus had a police escort to the ground, hopefully that's correct as the game will go ahead, possible late kick off.

Surely only a minority of fans would travel in via the Orwell Bridge with the majority of out of town fans using the A14 westbound, A12 and A140.

Police incident on Orwell Bridge. How high is it? Was it a “jumper”? Someone pissed off with British Rail?

Just STOOD from Preston to Edinburgh Waverley on the train. Cancellations aplenty causing feckin rammed trains

Some very good build up play but only one shot on target. It looks like it’s coming but Cambridge have a game plan and they’re sticking to it. Until we score nothing is likely to change.

Town huffing and puffing all half chances. Cambridge just hoping for something from a set play. Town need to up the tempo and maybe try shooting from outside the box? Instead of trying to walk it in.
