Who is the GOAT of the Premier League?
Not sure if this is airing in the UK, but I’ve been watching this program about the GOAT. Darren Bent & Robbie Fowler are hosts, but the best part is highlights of the best goal scorers. I know some may dislike Alan Shearer, but my word that man could take a chance! His volleying was exceptional!
Anyway thought it would be a good topic to discuss.

Re: Who is the GOAT of the Premier League?
Haaland, end of thread
Would never argue against Shearer, you'd love to have him leading the line, but if you're purely talking goal scoring, then it's Aguero. Ronaldo is the best striker to have ever played in the Premier league if that counts, but he didn't spend his prime here, so he can do one, plus he has a chapel. Haaland obviously has the best return, but he's going to have to do it for another 4 or 5 years before being given the GOAT label.
Pushed to choose one... Henry. He has the third best goals/game record after Haaland and Aguero, but he did it for longer than the former and with more flair, charisma and from deeper than the latter. If someone who knew nothing about football asked the question, I think he'd be the best example to show them.
Interesting slightly related stat for you: Cantona 156 PL appearances 56 assists, Scholes 499 PL appearances 55 assists. I would never have bet on that.

Re: Who is the GOAT of the Premier League?
I think I’d label Haaland the BEAST of the Premier League.
Yep agree, he will probably eventually become a GOAT contender. Henry is certainly up there, but for me the way Shearer finished a lot of his goals was just amazing.
Interesting stats on Cantona and Scholes. Cantona was one of my favourite players until he attacked a supporter during a match.

Thierry Henry or Alan Shearer. Close one.
And yep, definitely warmed to Cantona after that, as i did Zidane in the World Cup Final. Its ok having a laugh and a joke but when it gets serious, needs dealt with. Thats only opinion though. I know many (on this forum anyway) will have seen both instances as unacceptable. Respect that.

One of the most talented players of all time, who would have achieved greatness had he accepted a big move instead of staying loyal to the club he truly loved was a certain Matt Le Tissier, his reel on You Tube is phenomenal.

Yep, I have respect for MLT. He tended to put on a few pounds though…not of the sterling variety, but more of the too many sausages currency.

Yep, good shout....., and apparently an incredibly nice guy. My nephew went to the same school as MLT's kids. The Bro-in-law --->> (who is an absolute d!ck...., yep, thats unacceptable but required) talks to him and says he is a really humble guy.

My memory is failing, but I don’t recall Shearer emulating his domestic success for England. Is that right?

Sweet! Thank you! So essentially 30 goals with 63 appearances. That’s not bad!marko69 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 7:38 pmAll here, 9

Re: Who is the GOAT of the Premier League?
What i loved about Shearer was his “never give up” attitude. Guy was “on it” from start to finish. Like Ally McCoist up here.
Ok, thats enough England praise!

Re: Who is the GOAT of the Premier League?
If you’ve played football, you’ll know volleying is probably the hardest thing to do. I know, cuz my volleys either ended up in the cheap seats, or I’d pull a hamstring. Shearer obviously mastered that.
I’m surprised this thread hasn’t got Andym and others out of their living room chair…Blueblood, Ashford…dare I say Frosty? I know NZ will never produce a premier league goat, but they have a lot of under achieving ones lol!

NZ is a bit too keen on the rugger to produce many top-level footballers. Tommy Smith was a senior NZ player, no disrespect to Tommy but it illustrates the national football standard.

I actually wouldn’t be surprised if football becomes stronger in NZ, rugby has just become too physical for most people, I look at my own Tongan workforce and there are some big lads.
Obviously with only 5million people though, never going to set the world on fire.

Re: Who is the GOAT of the Premier League?
Denmark won the Euros. And they didn’t even qualify. They were guests due to the Yugoslav war and Yugoslavias disqualification. Like Scotland, they were only a population of just under 5 million at the time. It CAN be done.
Granted……. Not by Scotland. But NZ will NEVER win the Euros!

Uruguay's population is only 2/3rds of NZ's. I wonder if Footballer is on the skills shortage list?Frosty wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 12:24 pmI actually wouldn’t be surprised if football becomes stronger in NZ, rugby has just become too physical for most people, I look at my own Tongan workforce and there are some big lads.
