I just read that we exploring a deal to sign 36-year-old former Serbia midfielder Nemanja Matic from Lyon.

I sincerely hope this is all rumour and bollox - if it's true, and especially if we end up signing him, I will think that MA and KM have seriously lost the plot.
Source EADT
Finally, Foot Mercato have claimed that Ipswich are 'considering a move' for veteran midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The 36-year-old joined Manchester United from Chelsea in 2017, working under Kieran McKenna at Old Trafford.

With financial issues at his current club, Lyon, there's every reason to believe that the former Serbian international will be available. However, we understand that Ipswich are not interested in signing him at this stage, with the focus currently on signing attackers instead of a defensive midfielder.
Thank god for that.

Whitaker at Plymouth appears chasing after. Could be better suited than in a team battling away at end of Championship League and seems to score regular. Not sure if could succeed at Premier League level but the boy's a talent and finds goal often. Maybe Plymouth aren't looking to sell but if the right offer came by they'd maybe consider a deal.

Would be cheaper than Philogene. We were keen on him once 🤔

Yes, I thought exactly the same thing. Looked exactly like the type of player McKenna would like. Problem is it’s s helluva jump ( northern league to PL)

Forget it, we don’t have the luxury of experimental signings in our situation. In my opinion we 100% need another striker and that has to be our first priority. Whilst I’m not as anti Philogene as some on here it did cross my mind that maybe we could play Townsend behind Davis down the left which would tighten us up defensively without losing our assist machine. It just depends if Townsend could defend as well ans he did today against Premier League quality attackers which could be a problem.

I definitely think we’re missing a Premier League experienced head on the pitch especially to see games out. I know Matic’s name was mentioned and that’s now been and gone, but someone like him or similar would be a massive help especially with McKenna’s limited experience at this level. I know I’ve mentioned Jordon Hendersons name before simply because I know the guy quite well and follow his career, but he’s done an incredible job at Ajax where he was brought in to lead a talented young inexperienced team and it’s working well. When Ajax signed him they were struggling mid table and now sit 2nd behind PSV in a Champions League slot. I think a similar signing at town could have similar impact and move us to a comfortable mid table position.

Who this might be I don’t know but maybe some of you guys could think who we could attempt to sign to fill this role.

Villa have just confirmed the signing of Philogene replacement ( for about the same price we’re reportedly signing the Villa player for). So maybe there’ll be announcement from us soon?

Problem is, who do you turf out the side to do that job, because I don't think I'd routinely sub out Cajuste or Morsy just for the purpose of bringing on someone to see out a game and risk disrupting things, so they better be good to start. We already have Phillips, at 29 years old, 5 Premiership campaigns to his name (and 31 internationals), are you going to find someone that much more suitable, and are you going to factor in the two months plus that it would take to bring that player sufficiently up to speed with McKenna's way of playing?

It sounds nice on paper, but I don't know how practical it really would be. I would rather have one or two exceptional players come in, than three or four and be left with that period of bedding players in and finding out what system works etc. No thanks to that I'd say!

I thought Kalvin Phillips would be the person to do the job but he appears to have fitness and injury problems and doesn’t have natural leadership qualities either.

If we could find the right person I’d send Phillips back to Man City as he’s hardly fulfilled the role expected of him.

Just an impulsive opinion Ricco and not spent lots of time thinking it through, happy to be challenged that’s the whole purpose of a forum.

Can’t see it working myself as the left sided player tends to play as an inside 10, which gives Davis the space to go wide and deliver in - often to that inside ten.

I think Davis is fine/suited well to this 343 we play now

That Newcastle game was the last game of the 4231 formation. I’d say that was a turning point for KM as he changed tactic after that match.

The Fulham game was two pens. Yes one was Davis but it wasn’t like we got exposed down the left as such.

Any news on this philogene nonsense? It's embarrassing trying to deal with this guy and his entourage of tossers.

Yeah, you are right in that he doesn't have a huge presence sadly, but he's probably better the devil you know at this point. McKenna will know how happy he is with Phillips, Taylor and Luongo as his backups. It remains to be seen whether we can actually recruit someone like you mention, who is going to be not only good enough, but also both out of favour at his club and willing to come to us.

I just hope we don't make transfers for the sake of it, because a good settled side beats an excellent unfamiliar one.

To be honest Ricco had it not been for the Matic rumours I’m not sure I’d even given this any real thought. It was only when I tried to justify us signing Matic to myself, I could see a few positives but they extended well beyond the end of this season, eg the incumbent becoming a part of the McKenna management team.

Whilst I’m not as unhappy as some with us signing Villa’s Philogene, I would like to see us signing a back up or striking partner for Liam Delap. You only have to look at Man City to see how risky it is not to have a second fit striker.

If and when we find ourselves having to sell Delap , we'll find out how difficult it is to find a replacement, so the calls to find a back up striker now I find ,frankly, ridiculous . There are very few sides in the Premiership who have a striker anywhere near the standard of Delap. Liverpool yes ,Man.City yes, Arsenal ??, Chelsea Possibly (Jackson) , Brentford yes, now I'm struggling . possibly Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, Vardy at Leicester ,getting on a bit and very different to Delap. We have Hirst who when fit can play the role that Delap plays but he hasn't proved he's as prolific in actually scoring goals as Delap. To sum up ,out and out good strikers aren't exactly growing on trees.

I see Villa are now saying that they cannot sign Malen until Philogene has signed for us.
So what's the hold up?
If I were MA, I would now do my utmost to hijack Villa and sign Malen for us - maybe that's a bit too odious though?

It’s just one big p*ss take as far as I’m concerned. Totally fed up with it all now. The player could have been training with us for a sodding week and ready to go Thursday night, but oh no, of course not. Let’s just all p*ss about about so he can’t play when we’ve got no Burns, Szmodics, or potentially Omari….

Edit: I know, how about we nip in a buy the play Villa want, for the same price ,£20m and drop the Philogene deal. Bloody brilliant idea !!

Brace yourselves. It looks like Chelsea HAVE been trying to prise Delap away from us …..

He’s supposedly said he doesn’t want a move to Chelsea. So does this mean he would consider a move to say Arsenal or Liverpool? In which case if we lose him in this window we’re stuffed no matter how much money we get for him. Mobey in the bank is not the same as a talent in the shirt on the pitch!

I really don't think we need to worry about Delap right now, we know he could be pivotal to our survival, so obviously the club knows that too. That survival is worth hundreds of millions of pounds, so the only way he would go is for a ridiculous figure that none of those clubs would ever risk, they don't have the incentive and he's simply not the next Messi.

The only way he 'leaves' this window, is if it's as part of the deal in which he is immediately loaned back to us for the rest of the season or something weird like that.

I can't see Delap leaving he needs to be at Town to continue his progress, and it seems that Philogene and his agent are not to blame, Villa won't sell unless they get Malen.

Reading around things it looks like Villa now NEED to sell him quick in order to have the finances to sign their target , and in that order so as not to breach financial rules ( clubs finally taking note of rules it seems!)

So it is possible that he could leave this window . Friends how desperate the big clubs are to get their hands on the hottest property around atm. As soon as he gets his England call up , the price just went up. But I totally agree with you, his worth to us is the cost of relegation without him. So that’s upwards of £200m thank you!

Not sure if he'd want to come to us, or if he is any good. I'd prefer adeyemi from them (Dortmund) but he is probably more money, but he is young, talented, insanely fast etc.
