If you were playing the game today, in your new found yoof
Which position would you be playing and why?
I reckon I'd be a right wing back, because I'm right footed, ( used to be) very quick, and
(used to be) a defender, in the sports I did play

Left back.
Left back on the changing room.
I love football but was never that good at it, I did athletics to a high level and I was a fairly quick sprinter so probably also right wing back as liked a tackle too, just zero end product haha!
I’m tall and strong now so maybe CB, but my ankles are made of butter so I’d probably spend alot of time out injured.

I was a striker when I was younger, but when I hit my teens I became more of a CM play maker much like a #10. I set up more goals than I scored, and on the odd occasion I did score they were usually spectacular. Now after 5 mins of kicking the ball around I need an IV!
Btw, great thread!

Same for myself Hallam. I too was right wing. Fast and right footed, and a decent crosser of my chest and sky pointer!
No, seriously, could cross a ball for the overrated Quinno @ centre forward.
No, I'm not bitter @ his top goalscorer awards from 1983-86. (Ginger git!)

I did the usual drift from striker, through left side of midfield and eventually to central defender. Bloody hell if that had continued, by now I would be the washing the kit and making sandwiches for the under 7's

In my playing days the 2-3-5 system had not long been replaced by 4-3-3, 4-2-4, 4-4-2: but the weekend and midweek teams I played for used me as a sweeper in a 1-3-3-3 formation (this was popular in Europe for a number of years).
So, yeah, sweeper for me.

Enjoyed the inauguration on Monday did you

I have and will always be a Goalkeeper, I could be a central defender, that's good fun too, but don't fancy much else.
I think we have a worldwide problem after Messi, everyone wants to be a dribbling wide forward

Did you have your own BROOM? I bet you made a smashing job of cleaning up in the changing room. The Odious Mr Rossi wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2025 9:29 amIn my playing days the 2-3-5 system had not long been replaced by 4-3-3, 4-2-4, 4-4-2: but the weekend and midweek teams I played for used me as a sweeper in a 1-3-3-3 formation (this was popular in Europe for a number of years).

Keeper.
Always was and always will be. Did like playing outfield as well in friendly kick abouts, pick up games and was quite good with the old feet.
Oddly the one thing I did struggle with was a good set piece goal kick so would actually prefer how the game is played today with the short passes and being expected to play out from the back!!

Seems we almost have a TB.com team here! Hallam can be the physio and KM would really HAVE to be the messiah to manage us lot!

Funny how Ricco & Todd's words were eerily similar ---->> "Goalkeeper, always was, always will be!" ......, like a culty religion.

First rule of Keeper club, you don't talk about Keeper club.
Todd, I'm with you there, it's amazing how tough it is to repeatedly and reliably lump a stationary ball over the half way line. Pros with their tree trunk legs and perfected nutrition make it look easy.

And from which collection of Fairy Stories did you pinch that quote? Hans Christian Anderson or Brothers Grimm?mendipblue wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2025 2:05 pmDid you have your own BROOM? In my youth, they put me up front because I'd run around a lot and not give away goals up there, which I would further back
I'm Kaydon Jackson but really old and about 100 times worse

Re: If you were playing the game today, in your new found yoof
I played League football from age 12 to age 37 in Ipswich & District, Ipswich Sunday Licenced Trades, Norwich & Norfolk, Chelmsford & District and Colchester & NE Essex leagues and moved from right wing to right midfield to right back as age moved on and speed slowed.
By the mid 70’s my love of watching Bobby Robson’s Ipswich and an opportunity to get my first season ticket in the West Stand reduced my playing days to Sunday morning only. I never thought I’d prefer watching football to playing but those Robson Days were so special especially some of our Cup runs domestically and in Europe.
If I played today I’d love to be an attacking midfielder but in reality at age 74 I’d be right back behind the goal in the stand.
