Royle leaves club

Post by MMJR67 » Sat Apr 01, 2006 12:45 am

By Aston - April 1 2006

Late last night Ipswich Town manager Joe Royle left Portman Road by mutual consent after 3 and half years in charge.

Just a week before his 57th birthday Royle has retired from management for reasons that are currently unclear but it may be that he has enough of the criticism he received throughout his time in charge from Town fans.

Town Chairman David Sheepshanks: “It is regrettable that Joe has parted company with Ipswich Town football club but I would like to thank him for every thing he has done for this football club in during his tenure as manager.”

Royle’s management career started in 1982 with Oldham Athletic, he spent 12 years at Boundary Park getting the club from the into the premiership, in 1990 he took Oldham to the league cup final and the semi final of the FA Cup, being beaten by Manchester United on both occasions, he left Oldham in 1994 following their relegation from the premiership. Royle then took over at Everton as manager, he famously won the FA Cup in 1995 and is still the last Englishmen to win the trophy, he left Everton in 1997 following a dispute about money, he returned to management in 1998 when he took over at Manchester City but he could not stop them getting relegated to the second division (league one) but the following year he got them promoted via the play-offs and a year later they were promoted to Premiership but they only lasted one season in the top before being relegated again which lead to Royle being sacked, in 2002 he took over at Town.

Joe’s assistant Willie Donachie will take charge of first team affairs for the remaining 6 games of the season.
