with the opinion poll up and running, I thought I should present my case for Joe to stay. it seems to be very much one way traffic around here at the moment, with everyone saying he should go. I cans see why people would have this view given the season we have just endured, however, I believe he should stay and this is why:
Compare Joe's record as Ipswich manager to that of the great George Burley. Joe has been here 3 and a half years and has taken us to two play-off semi-finals. In George's first 3 and a half years he also took us to two play-off semi-finals but also got us relegated from the Prem. we gave George another two years to do the job and get us promoted. the board of this club are a rare breed - they have faith in the managers they appoint and give them an adequate chance to the job. too many boards in this country don't give their managers a chance and subsequently suffer as a result. there is very strong evidence to suggest that clubs like us (Man Utd, Charlton, Crewe, Bolton) achieve success by allowing their managers time to build good teams. clubs that are all too quick to sack thier managers often suffer as a result (Southampton, Newcastle, Aston Villa).
My point is this; despite a disappointing season, Joe's record with us is still a good one. In his first season he was able to keep a sinking ship afloat and even take us close to the play-offs. In his second year he did get us to the play-offs and last year he took us within a couple of points of promotion. this year we have suffered badly for various reasons, Joe's tactics possibly being one of them, but we should not forget the job he has done with this club overall. Joe has a proven track record of getting teams promoted and that is why he was appointed in the first place. He is a good manager, perhaps not quite a great one, but his experience and expertise still make him a man very capable of doing the job - getting us promoted. I doubted Joe at first, but he earnt my respect and I believe he deserves one more chance to get things right. If things start slowly next season and there are few signs of improvements, by all means sack him. But for now, the job is still unfinished. And now Royle should be given the time to finish it.

Some very good points James ...sadly a good few on here will beg to differ (as is their right). We all have differing opinions and mine are...that Royle has done the best he canm this season with the playing staff available to him.
His dodgy tactics - may , in some part, have been due to the personal available AND the opposition he had to overcome !
It's interesting to note the "Royle Out" supporters have yet to voice their views - maybe they are "seeing the light" from your post !!
awaits barrage of abuse ......!

Right I'll come in to bat for the dissenters...I just think don't see where he's going with this....his signings aren't providing value for money, witness Currie and Parkin, now I don't mind Currie, I think he's got good skills - but he should be our standout...which I don't think he is (recent award duly noted and ignored) and Parkin looks a poor buy (although time will tell - I still have faith), Joe knows the game he teaches and plays...so why buy a striker who doesn't play that game?? - his tactics don't seem to bring out the best in the players we have...our defense is awful and has been for a while despite some very experienced players and good keepers - the midfield doesn't help the defense out enough.
There are good points made above about Joe, and Im almost a fence sitter on this one, but I know that i wouldn't be upset if Joe was to leave. I agree that he is good at getting teams up (I mean Oldham!!!!?????) but I'm just not seeing that here - we are too rudderless for my liking, Im resigned to the fact he'll stay and so wish him all the best and might well get proved wrong - I REALLY hope so, and am one of the more optimistic fans (so it seems) about next year despite my view of Joe....so to sum up...if Dario Gradi, Phil Parkinson, Ronni Moore or someone of a similar ilk was to show an interest and Joe to resign without a fight then Id be happy - but I also see soem potential for next year...so there...thats a desenting voice...but a very respectful one

Re: Joe Royle: the case for him to stay
Think you'll find that when Burley took over we were already pretty much condemned to relegation from the Prem, so your reasoning falls down there. Let's face it, we had the best chance we've ever had of auto promotion last season - we were placed far better for it than we ever were under Burley - and yet we blew it big time. Royle - as manager - has to take his fair share of the blame for that. Don't delude yourself that the lack of replies to this and your Royle Out poll mean than you are convincing folk that he should be given another chance. The fact is that most people on this board have got sore throats from shouting..................................Royle Out!!!!!!!!!!!James the Brains wrote:with the opinion poll up and running, I thought I should present my case for Joe to stay. it seems to be very much one way traffic around here at the moment, with everyone saying he should go. We blew it last season big style - no question!!!
Royle was given funds for Currie and loans, and blew it. He had Pablo who should have come in when Darren Bent went off the boil, but Royles ego came before what was good for the club!!!
For the last reason alone he should go - the club is bigger and better than anyone individual IMO - royle obviously felt he was more important.
The sheer waste of money used on players since his arrival beggers belief. Only a handful have come good, yet we have seen an endless line of good young potential walk out the door!!
Royle was brought in to get us promoted - forget about how well you think he may of done, the simple fact remains that he hasn't delivered and based on this seasons performances it doesn't look too great for next season.
ROyle has failed to address the main problems in the side - DEFENCE (lack of it) he has failed to change the system or style of play when the team has needed it. His tactics and team selections absolutely defies belief. Yes he is the manager and he should know best, but to suggest that we know nothing about the game is wrong!!
We have heard excuses after excuses from the management and board. All we want is honesty and 100% commitment to the cause, something we will never get with the board and management in place.
I am not just singing to get royle out, I want a clean sweep and to get shot of Sheepshanks too! He signed royle on to get us promotion which makes him a failure too IMO!!
You can look at statistics and quote that Royle has done better in his first few years than Burley, however Burley inherited one of the worst, old past it squads this club had seen. Royle on the other hand inherited a young talented squad and has turned it into a bunch of hasbeens!!
I REST MY CASE LOL
