Now this is a pet hate of mine

.....I think Neville is bloody useless....so often he gets skinned by opponents at the top level...will perform poorly and "struggles to contain an opponent" classic 5 or 6 out of ten performer...virtually all of England's players are top notch - they may have bad days but will also be class - this guy as far as I can remember has never totally fired at this level. We have a guy who has 50+ caps who is only ever solid and I just think that is no where near good enough at this level. This is imho the most blatent case of a "top team" player getting a look in at international level over other candidates...I'd welcome someone setting me straight here..please when has he really shone - best player for England on the day sort of stuff, cos Im at a loss to remember and get riled up about him at rightback

Incidently I'd far prefer Ledley King occupying the position, he is big and physical and has shown a real diversity to his game playing in the middle (of defense and midfield) he was promising years ago - but has never kicked on at this level because he's never been given a chance - he handled Henry with ease in Euro 2004, gutted he won't be going but he would also have given us that extra presence at the back for dead ball situations...something which we really struggle at (a lot like Town) two big centre backs and two short arse wing backs..(Cole and Neville, Baron and Sito)

cant tell u how much i disagree with u, Neville has his faults, mainly because hes a manc

but he is regularly englands most solid defender, in fact take john terry out of the team and id say hes probably the best defender we have, he can play center back or right back, is always supporting the right winger, and gets himself into some great positions

Blimey what's going on?
I actually agree with Riv!
Neville has been England's best defender for a while IMHO anf as Riv points out, he links up superbly with Beckham AND he can actually cross the ball!

I have to say that i am always one of the first to join in the Neville bashing but unfortunately he is a solid defender who despite his age gets down the flanks well and can put in a good cross. Why exactly you think he is so poor I am not sure as I have so rarely seen him have a bad game.
Moreover there are not many alternatives are there? I do not think King is a right back (as highly as I do rate him) and that leaves who? YOung at Charlton is promising but a bit raw and Carragher is certainly no better than Neville.
Owen Hargreves for right back mayby?

I'm not a massive fan of Gary, but he's out best right back by some way, so you've gotta take him.
He certainly has a lot of World Cup and top flight English football experience.

Im afraid mate your talking complete balls here...
I would have agreed with you 4/5 years ago, But of recent years Neville seems to have improved with age. Before i viewed him as Mr. Average but in recent years his all round defending has stayed solid AND he has added a new dimension to his game in the way he gets forwards on that right flank hitting the byline! Something that Beckham wont do, I think the Neville Beckham combo on the right will take us far this summer despite people slateing them both!
COME ON PEOPLE NO MORE NEGATIVE POSTS ABOUT ENGLAND PLEASE!
COME ON ENGLAND!

Agree with Dazza...at the mo he is the best English RB around..and until a better one comes along we've gotta stick with him....He's not our best defender I dont think he'll let us down this summer....
