It's the Germans booing him, against them the ball hit his arm which they thought was a pen which they didn't get.

Yep, that was the explanation from the commentators. I wonder who told them. I assume Euro tickets go on sale to Germans as theyre hosts?Cabanas Blue wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 8:26 pmIt's the Germans booing him, against them the ball hit his arm which they thought was a pen which they didn't get.

As one of only 4 national anthems which, I believe, officially has no words, I guess singing along to it may be a problem!hallamblue wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 7:59 pmSpanish players and officials look a bag o nerves. Hardly any of them singing their national anthem…

Re: Euro 2024 Thread
Anthem dates back before the signing of American Independence of all things. First originated around 1770 when Rey Carlos III used it for opening ceremony, not long after it became a national state anthem. Although wasn't until some years after at time of Reina Isabella II did it then become recognized as Spain's official one. Over time words were actually included but it didn't last and with a nation including many Catalans, Basques, Castilians etc it was therefore decided to leave it as an instrumental.
History lesson aside that's how you get to be champion. You take on the best team sides the game came offer. You don't get past Germans and France and not expect to achieve nothing. If or when they win it, the best team will have done it, there can be no real dispute.
After the English stumble and fumble a way past The Solomon Islands or Tasmania tomorrow with more luck than a Four Leaf Clover convention we'll go again. Netherlands would be a more hopeful opponent, at least they'd make a fight of it and sure hope for revenge from 2010 - it would have made for a real good event - but somehow you know how it's going to be. France played well today, made a fight of it, showed intent and resolution but somehow think they're not quite ready to be European Champions once again. The same quality and intention from 2022 just doesn't appear there.

My memory's not what is was so correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time Spain played England, in Seville, weren't they 0-3 down after half an hour?

Going by last night it might be six this time !
Got to get passed Netherlands first before any final talk ?
Having said that England can beat both IMO.
England usually just come up a bit short but if they perform to the level they are capable of then I think they can win this.

Re: Euro 2024 Thread
And that will make a lot of the criticism aimed at Southgate pretty daft. Yes the football is pretty boring, safe, negative, tactically lacking, call it what you will, but it does make me laugh when I keep reading "Southgate has never won anything" well sorry but neither did Robson, Venables, Hoddle, Greenwood, Eriksson, etc etc

Re: Euro 2024 Thread
Having been one of those who was not looking forward to this at all and had no enthusiasm for the competition, I have to say that whilst performances and the tournament generally have been poor, I have actually enjoyed having it as a companion during the bleak close season - especially with the awful weather we have had! So now we are here, I hope England do go on to win it. The reality is that a draw will
do and then if its pens, its anyones game so we should not fear anyone really. If we get the 'hoodoo' of not winning since 1966 off our backs then maybe we can all get on with the rest of our footballing lives! I would hate the clamour for awards etc to be bestowed but that sadly seems to be the world we live in. I can't change it so lets enjoy it! So lovely to see the scottish bitterness, Valleyroad - especially as you couldn't see the rivalry between Norwich and Ipswich, it seems your hatred of the English is in full voice
oh the irony...

Re: Euro 2024 Thread
Well I've always thought of the Spanish as a bunch of cheating actors - rolling around on the floor feigning agony when they havn't even been touched.
That's been borne out so far this tournament plenty of times - but it sickened me last night to see that it has apparently rubbed off on a 16 year old, who rolled around in agony as though he had been rogered up the backside by an elephant when the defender's foot was clearly 12 inches away from him.
For this reason, I sincerely hope that whoever wins tonight will comprehensivey thrash the Spanish on Sunday night.

I don't hate the English in the slightest and having lived there for significant periods of time and have many friends in England and have a better perspective of it as a country than many who have not.
I'll tell you one thing though, I am well travelled and the English are not well liked anywhere, so have a think about that !
On your Norwich and Ipswich comment, I fully understand rivalry. Rivalry is a good thing in sport. Its when it decends into hatred and the consequences of it that I have an issue. Maybe you don't
