Murdoch Reckons Sky Has Saved Football
Murdoch says Sky 'saved' football
Sky has had a monopoly on live TV rights for football since the 1990s
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch believes his company saved football in the UK when it bought the rights to show Premier League games on Sky television.
"(British football) is awash with cash," the News Corporation chairman told BBC Radio Five Live on Sunday.
"Put your mind back 20 years to what it was like to go to a football match and (compare it to) what it is today.
"The game is better, all the arenas are infinitely better. It's been a revolution for football."
Sky television has enjoyed exclusive broadcasting rights to live top-flight football in England since the formation of the Premier League in 1992.
It saved football in many ways
Rupert Murdoch on Sky
The first deal was worth £191m over five seasons, while the next contract, negotiated to start in 1997, rose to £670m over four seasons.
The Premier League's current £1.024bn deal with BSkyB runs over the course of three seasons from August 2004.
The decision by the Premier League to chose BSkyB over terrestial broadcasters BBC and ITV in the 1990s was seen by many as radical at the time, as it made pay-television the home of football.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sorry Mr Murdoch but many football fans in this country (me being one of them) have the opposite view.
British football is not awash with cash (only the Premier league). I agree Sky has changed the face of football but imo not for the better.

Hmmmmm...
4 teams have won the Premiership since 1992.
The FA Cup has been completely devalued.
Many fans have been priced out.
Relegation is now financially devastating.
The league is packed with money grabbing mercenaries.
I don't think I'd agree either Shed.
Although it is true that football in the '80's was really in trouble (Heysel, Bradford and Hilsborough) Italia '90 was the renaissance point and Murdoch just jumped on the bandwagon at the right time.
FOOTBALL SAVED SKY, not the other way round.
Without football SKY (or BSkyB as it was then) would've gone to the wall, which is why it pisses me off that SKY dictate so much to the FA and the Premiership rather than the other way round.
SKY do not own football, they merely pay to televise it (so how come they dictate the fixture list, kick off times etc).

Has he saved football??? My arse!!!
Football has changed alot the past 15 years that is true - has this been because of Sky - I think it is more to do with peoples attitudes and society in general.
My dad grew up supporting town when football violence was rife. Whilst the problem still exists today I think it has lost its place in football - this IMO has nowt to do with sky but perhaps more a social thing.
Sky have thrown stupid money at the minority of clubs - there are 92 professional clubs, and god knows how many extra hundreds of semi pro clubs out there. Whilst the big clubs attract big crowds they are only representative of a small number of total football supporters.
Sky has helped create a massive financial gap where there never used to be one. Football was never broke and never needed fixing by sky. All it has created is a bunch of dumb "superstars" who are generally no where near as commited and motivated as they should be. If that is dear old sky have saved for us then they can have it back LOL.
Sky is killing the game in general. The big clubs think they are fine and safe with their massive incomes - however if smaller clubs were to start going out of business this would have a massive knock on effect on every other team out there. Football relys on all clubs working together to keep a balance - a balance which has been pushed in favour of the rich boys.
Sooner or later the bubble is going to burst and it will be interesting to see just what happens to the remnants of our professional leagues.

I only started watching football when I was about 7 so 1993 and that was when sky took over football and for me it was fantastic to be able to watch games when I want, but then I started going to football and learned about the game.
THe premiership has become the only place to be and if your not there your nobody. THe premierleague has become boaring and I dont think it's the best league in the world anymore. ALthough it is a breath of fresh air this season to see teams falter.
Maybe we will all feel angry about this more because of what happend with relegation and a lot to do with telivised games and sponsership and being known as a club.
I'm sure more people follow the game, but more people are skint as are the clubs..........
