This was the game that both sides required the 3 points and a game that always generates a great atmosphere from the 2000+ travelling away support.
As predicted Palace started the game at full throttle trusting the pace of their front men.Long, direct ball up to them asap was their game plan that got them a goal after about 10 mins. Towns defence was raggerd without Naylor, De-vos commanding in the air along with Mr Ipswich(Fabian),but both found wanting when run at with pace. Scott Barron looked very slow too on the left side of defence and was bailed out several times.
Magic Jim was the heart of our mid-field,though he never fully got right into the game, which is not surprising considering his lack of match starts.Garvin was trying to play a good passing game on a pitch that was cutting up very quickly. The state of the pitch ment that the ball was in the air more than what is was on the ground.Currie drifted in and out of the game sending dummies here, there and everyware without achieving very much,One shot on goal with the power of a well used battery from a kids toy on Boxing day!!! Whip the ball in with pace please darren now and then, your game is becomming predictable!
Matt Richards, with mum and dad watching with us,was running from end to end.He got into some great attacking positions and had a clear cut chance in front of goal unfortunetly on his weaker right foot, the ball ending up in row Z amongst the palace faithful behind the goal.
Our OG came at the right time and resembled something you see on a pinball machine, bouncing of several players before creeping over the line dispite a desperate lunge from the palace keeper. This lifted the away support and spured us into full vocal assault. Dissalowed goals at both ends from Johnson and Fuller for off-side were on reflection correct decisions.
Lee and Fuller were our front pairing for this game and it must be said a pairing that on paper looks mighty fine. In reality though,Lee was lively and looking for the pass and yet again got very little protection from the officials, though to be fair to the officials,Lee does like a tumble or two. He is a player who has strength and pace yet falls down with remarkable ease!! I do hope that Pre season, the coaching staff at Town can persuade him to drop the theatre stuff and use his skill and strength.
Fuller on the other hand had a chance to show us how much he realy wanted to play for Ipswich Town football club. His goal from a corner kick in an unmarked position on the near post was well taken,His celebrations were non existant,His movement up front was lacking too, several good balls were put through for him to chase on to only for him to turn on to the offending player with a blank expression..."I aint running for that!!". I felt that if we had Haynes on for the last 20 mins we may of nicked all the points from this one.
The red card awarded to fuller was fully justified...He was having stern words with a palace defender,in an off the ball sitituation shrugging him off and continuing with his gestures towards the referee,Having realised that the lino had seen him and was now flagging for the ref's attention,Fuller was on bended knee pretending to tie a boot lace like a school boy being caught with his pants down.Having already given Fuller a yellow early on in the game for descent,The ref felt enough was enough and rightly sent him packing. As a player, Fuller can be outstanding, His Preston days are a testament to that, I feel his mind is not right and needs to be addressed,I wouldnt attempt to sign him permentaly in this state of mind for he is a loose cannon IMHO.
An appearence from Casement at right back in replacement for Barron with Sito switching was a welcome sight for this supporter. This is the future for our club and Casement will play a big part in it. Skard i feel will make a valid contribution too next season,He came on in replacement to Magic, who dispite reports that he may be leaving sooner rather than later went off like a player who new it was not his last game in a Town shirt. Skard looked keen and was itching to touch the ball,Just on appearences you can tell just how fit this kid is. His first competitive challange nearly resulted in a late foul, thankfully the palace player skipped over it!! First time many of us have seen Skard. I agree with Nicky (78 greats) who frequents the reserve games, That he is not quite ready,But again i think he will play an important role for us next season.
One world class save from Shane "Stretch" Supple in the last few minitues ment that the points were shared that did neither sides any favours. Palace needed the 3 points to keep their push for 2nd spot alive and we needed them to rekindle any hope of a play-off spot. Our season is now over as far as actually achieving anything,I hope that these last 7 games we can see the emergance of players like Casement,Haynes,Clarke and the ever improving Liam Trotter. Our aim now must be to do enough to finnish above the "Budgies".
The Travelling Tractor army were yet again fantastic. The vallent attempt at doing the "Bouncy-Bouncy" is gaining momentum It must be said that we certainly out sang those south londoners. enjoy your season and here's looking forward to the next one!
