Worst finish in 40 years??

Post by Gaz » Mon Apr 10, 2006 1:49 pm

I read today in the sun that if Town slip 2 more places down the table it would be our worst finish for 40 years.

Anyone know if this is true??

  the words "read" and "in the sun" seem a contradiction in terms if I may say so !!

suffice to say yes It will probably be Town's worst season for many a long year - but in the grand scale of things Ipswich town FC hasnt done so bad when all things are considered this season !

It might be our worse position league wise for some time, however I still feel next season will be a marked improvement on the current campaign. Not sure if we will hit automatic promotion but I believe we will see a much improved town side next year.

This season has been one of struggle and pressure, after last seasons near miss we were deflated yet optimistic of similar success. We lost key players last season and have had the worst season for injuries I can ever remember as a town fan.

The young boys must be knackered for putting in the effort that has been required - they will be stronger, fitter and wiser next season.

We have had alot of players coming in this year, Sito, Skaard, Peters, Parkin, Forster, Lee - and if you include all the youngsters as well, then it will no doubt take a while for these players to settle and learn each others game. No doubt next season a more common bond will have been formed between all the guys.

This season was over long ago - therefore the players have been trying to motivate themselves for next season. We all know they should be playing for the shirt, playing for the fans etc, but if perhaps you had no purpose for the job you did would you be able to go out there and give it your all? I know I wouldn't and perhaps that is wrong but I guess that is life.

I have been concerned by Royle this season, his tactics and team selections have left me gobsmacked at times, his excuses have been poor and at times he has talked about us fans like we are purely ignorant, but perhaps next season we will rise from the asses like a phoenix.

Next season we won't be anyones favourite, we will be considered mid-table mediocrity, without the pressure associated with being favourites. Just look what pressure has done to the likes of Sheff U in recent years, consistent failure!!!

If ever there was a season to make a surprise attack, then next season is it IMO. Just like a certain club up the road managed a couple of years back, when they were far from favourites at the beggining of that season!!

Im really looking forward to seeing what our strikers of Forster, Lee, Parkin & Haynes can drum up with a fully fit midfield of Westy , Williams, Juan (hopefully) Garvan & Richards providing the ammo !

I just cannot see Joe changing the way his sides perform. The players look promising, the tactics look tired, jaided, and very much old-school. And the decisions at critical moments, consistently wrong. That leaves me to believe we aren't going to make that step change we need to get to the next level. I think the play-offs is a good target again, and which Joe has proved he can achieve, but I doubt whether he can deliver the consistency or the resillience to gain either automatic, or a play-off promotion.
