January Transfer rumours

OK I'll kick it off.....
Ipswich Town have been linked with a loan move for Norwich City midfielder Ben Marshall.

The 27-year-old moved to Carrow Road in the summer from Wolves, following a loan at Millwall but has struggled to make an impact at Carrow Road, making just five appearances for the Canaries.

All of those came in August, with the wide midfielder an unused substitute during the 2-2 draw at Bristol City yesterday.

He previously worked under Ipswich boss Paul Lambert at Blackburn, before the Scot signed him for Wolves for £1.2million in January 2017.

The Sun are reporting that Ipswich are interested in a loan swoop for the midfielder, who can also play at full-back. while Millwall are also said to be keen on bringing Marshall back to The Den.

Ipswich were previously interested in Marshall during his time at Blackburn.
It may only be from the Sun but seems the type of signing we may be on the lookout for. I wouldn't be adverse to it.

Very pleasing signing if it happens. This story may have legs considering his PL connections.

Could be lazy journalism, but have seen a few sites saying the same

TWTD understands former Blues Daryl Murphy and Cameron Carter-Vickers are on Paul Lambert’s lengthy list of potential January loan signings.

Lambert recently revealed he had handed owner Marcus Evans a list of possible new recruits as he looks to augment his squad during January, deals he ideally wants completed early in the transfer window.

Centre-half Carter-Vickers, 20, who is currently on loan at Swansea from Tottenham, spent an impressive spell with the Blues during the second half of last season making 17 starts.

Town were interested in bringing him back for a further spell in August but the 6ft 1in tall defender ultimately joined the Swans on a season-long loan.

However, Southend-born Carter-Vickers has found his opportunities limited at the Liberty Stadium having made only four starts and four sub appearances.

As was the case with his spell at Sheffield United in the first half of last season, Spurs may feel his development is better suited to a move elsewhere in January.

Striker Murphy, 35, has had four previous stints with the Blues, three loans and a permanent spell.

Having had a trial at Town in 2005 when a Waterford United player prior to signing for Mick McCarthy’s Sunderland, the Irish international was subsequently brought to Portman Road for the first of his loans by Roy Keane in 2010.

Further loan spells under Paul Jewell followed before McCarthy signed him on a permanent basis from Celtic in June 2013.

In total, Murphy scored 67 goals in 207 starts and 18 substitute appearances for the Blues, including 27 in the 2014/15 play-off campaign.

He left Town for Newcastle for £3 million in August 2016 and helped the Magpies to the Championship title in his only season at St James’ Park.

Murphy moved on to Nottingham Forest the following summer and scored nine goals in his first campaign at the City Ground.

This season he has netted four times, all before the end of September, with his first-team opportunities having been limited more recently, partly due to the form of other players but also as he picked up a virus.

However, Murphy made his first appearance in two months as a 77th-minute sub during Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Preston and manager Aitor Karanka appears to see him in his plans, which may mean the Blues have to look elsewhere for their new number nine.

“He has had to be patient when it comes to not playing, so he deserved a goal for that patience,” Karanka told the Nottingham Post following the game against the Lilywhites.

“It was not to be against Preston, but I am sure that the goal will come for him again in the future. He will score more goals.”

Lambert has said he is not going to make wholesale changes to his squad with a handful of additions - largely loans - likely to be brought in. A number of experienced Championship players have been identified for each of the roles the Blues boss is looking to fill during the window.

Owner Marcus Evans was at Portman Road for Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Wigan where he met with new general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill and director of football Dave Bowman to discuss progress.

O’Neill, speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch on Saturday (1hr 41mins 32secs), said: “The manager’s made it clear that we would like to get some players in and we’re working on that process at the moment.

“At this moment in time unfortunately [there’s not anything I can tell you] as I don’t want to get anything out.

“All I can tell you is that we are working incredibly hard, a number of targets have been targeted and we’re working through those processes.

“It’s not easy as everyone knows but we’re hoping to get things done very quickly.”

Regarding Evans, he added: “He’s very passionate about the club and wants it to be in a better position than we are at the moment.

“Listening to Paul and what his plans are going forward with the whole club, he knows that we need to look at that experienced development part of the plan going forward for the next few weeks.

“No one wants a club to be relegated and go into League One. We are looking at those development plans and things are hopefully moving in the right direction for the development and reinforcement to come in in January.”

O’Neill says that the financial implications of a possible drop into League One aren’t being ignored but that working on retaining the club’s Championship status is the priority.

“It’s not one of those things you can take your eye off,” he admitted. “We’re obviously having to look at a number of things because of the situation we’re in.

“But it’s not necessarily our primary focus because our primary focus is staying in this league, that’s where we want to be and we’ve got to work incredibly hard on and off the pitch to make sure we can make that happen.”
Thoughts people ? Definite yes for me where Carter-Vickers is concerned, I used to love Murphy but think we may be better looking elsewhere.

Yes to Carter-Vickers but would not want the signing to be made so that Chambers could be moved to right-back.
No to Murphy as think it might be one return too many.

The most important thing though is that we must get our business done early in the January window as if we delay things like we have in the past, then whoever we get in it might be too late in helping us to stay up.

Carter-Vickers - a centre half. Definitely good for the squad but maybe not the area we need most. Chambo is Chambo and Pennington is having a good season. Even Knudsen has had some alright games there.

Murphy - definitely better than what we have at front despite his age. But not convinced Forest would let him go

Strikers and full backs it seems are the weakest links. Maybe Chambo could play right back again but he was often exposed in that role last season

I seem to recall Pennington played RB at Swansea

or could this be 3 at the back, with wingbacks?
I can't remember how Lambert set his teams up.

I like the look of this one as well...………………………

Middlesbrough striker Rudy Gestede is reported to be among Paul Lambert’s January Town loan targets.

According to the Daily Telegraph the 30-year-old will be made available by Boro during the transfer window with the Blues having made an initial enquiry.
Benin international Gestede was previously with Aston Villa - who sold the 6ft 4in tall frontman to the Teessiders for £6 million in January 2017 - and Blackburn but not during Lambert’s time in charge of either club.
Like Daryl Murphy, Gestede is very much the experienced Championship number nine Lambert is looking to add to his squad during the January window and is almost certainly on his list of potential recruits.
Essey-lès-Nancy-born Gestede, who spent time with Cardiff and Metz earlier in his career, has made only two starts this season - one in the Championship in November - as well as four sub appearances.
Overall, he has made 20 starts and 27 sub appearances for Boro, scoring six goal

Waghorn has been an unused substitute in three of Derby’s last four games and is clearly out of favour and being kept out of the team by Jack Marriott who is currently Lampards first choice striker which was easy to see why watching their game v Forest earlier tonight.

It would appear that Derby may well add a further striker to their squad in the January transfer window which will leave Waghorn completely out in the cold despite his bank balance looking healthier than when he was at Portman Road. I can see him moving on in January and could well return to Rangers on loan. Oh Boy could we do with back here.

After watching Marriott play tonight I’m completely baffled why we chose not to renew his contract back in 2015 when we failed to identity his talent. In my opinion he’s better than any striker we currently have on the payroll and we kicked him out for free.

Gestede would be a good signing. Hope that one comes through, can see his scoring rate improve with us, as he will be the main striker and the whole team will be focused on supplying him.

Hey bluemike, I've been hiding in my secret island lair awaiting the end of debate on brexit, bad managers and taking a punt on lower league players.

Hahaha, good to be back. Feels like home.

Welcome back Wilnis great to have you back, but please don’t use that Brexit word again, this is about the only place on our island where i’ve not seen it used which makes it such a great place to escape to. I’m so fed up with it we’ve sold up and in the process of emigrating.

I really hope we get Gestede! He scored 20 goals in 31 starts when he was at Blackburn. He's 6'4"...exactly the type of striker we need. Sorry, but I'm not interested in Murphy or Waghorn. At 35 Murphy's an injury waiting to happen, and Waghorn is a tit for leaving us.

Waghorn wanted out as he was having to carry such a load on his own back most of the time. Arguably expected to do too much on his own (such were the ineptitude of other attackers around him). Not only that stuck with a team with no direction at time of departure and a manager in Hurst who was only digging a bigger hole for itself.

Derby County would have offered an improved salary, a young ambitious team coach in Frankie Lampard and most of all, a team with a much more viable opportunity of achieving something. Can't understand if and why they omit him so often for games, they must got some very accomplished forwards there to leave him out so often as they would appear to.

Would I have him back ? Maybe. What he did for us was commendable but he needs a partner or two of similar efficiency to make it work. As for Murphy, say again No, his time has passed. The Gestede player mentioned seems promising but it takes more than mere words or speculation to make things occur. I'd take Dack from Blackburn also if it were possible, Graham there also if the other (move) didn't work out.

He wanted out purely for the money, no other reason.

Exactly.
Don't blame him for getting one last big payday whilst having the chance but it was always the case that he might end up not playing on a regular basis at Derby. As has already been said can see him going out on loan somewhere.

why on earth would Dack want to come to us?

Also Waghorn left for a much improved salary, I think that much is clear, we have no chance of getting him back in reality in my opinion unless it was a short term loan but I cant see it. Gestede is an option I would consider, he has proven to be very good in the past although has gone off the boil at Middesbrough but then again most strikers would under Pulis!

If Middlesborough get promoted signing Gestede on a permanent basis could be possible and provide us some continuity into next season.

I really like the idea of Gestede and a decent defender. That way we have aerial power in both defending and attacking set pieces and nicking a win here and there.
