Pre-Match Thoughts - Mike

What An Opening Month......

There was much debate prior to the start of the season as to how Town would fare in League One with the usual split that you would expect, while I found some of the more sceptical opinions to be far too negative I also didn't expect us to run away with anything. We now have the opening month out of the way and I think it is fair to say it has gone really well, Top of the very early League Table, unbeaten in Six matches, strikers scoring goals, players coming back from injury, some decent new additions to the squad and all this on the back of what was largely viewed upon as a tricky start to the campaign, yes the feelgood factor is definitely back among 99% of Town fans (always One or Two you'll never please). Of course it is only Six games and there are still no doubt some down days to come but I can't help but feel this squad is way to strong for most of what League One has to offer.

The latest game against Shrewsbury saw Town race out of the blocks to go Two up inside Ten minutes which really did give us a platform to go on and win pretty comfortably, I am not sure what game the Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts watched but for me we were comfortable for most of it, yes Holy made a couple of saves, shock, horror a keeper making a save or Two !!! I felt for large parts of the game we played with them, Paul Lambert saw it pretty much as I did in that we were very good, and to be fair they weren't the worst team we will see this season, the pleasing thing is that it was another clean sheet too and the goals keep flowing.

What a difference it makes having a decent referee too, I thought he was excellent and the heavy handed tactics of the Shrewsbury side was dealt with very well, all too often in recent times I have felt we get a very raw deal in these type of situations but Mr Kettle was wise to it and for me had an excellent game, even if he was a tad generous with the penalty shout !!!

I think we can safely say we now have a real Right Back in every sense of the word, Kane Vincent-Young marked his debut at Portman Road with a very impressive man of the match performance and hardly put a foot wrong, strong runs out of defence, some assured defending a big hand in the Third goal and won the penalty for the crucial second, his confidence on the ball was clear for all to see and he even had time for a bit flash Cruyff like ball control once or twice, as debuts go they don't come much better, so hats off to Lambert & Evans for a very astute signing.

Do We Need This ?????

What even is this competition ?? The EFL Cup or something, I am not sure I would be taking this too seriously if I were Paul Lambert, let's get the fringe players in and what will be will be, they need game time anyway so it makes sense but risking injury to key players is not a route I want to go down. Spurs U21's come to town for the first of Three group games, I cant tell you a thing about any of their players except they will no doubt be a talented bunch who will be well drilled for the task ahead, are we expected to win ? I have no idea to be honest, does anyone overly care ? I want us to win every game and yes I am going but I think the only thing I can say is that it does provide a path to a day out at Wembley, a long way off that for sure but I won't be too upset should it not go our way. That said I see Town winning this by 2-1, based on what I don't know. COYB'S

The Opposition – Tottenham FC Under 21’s

Originally named Hotspur Football Club, the club was formed on 5 September 1882 by a group of schoolboys led by Bobby Buckle. They were members of the Hotspur Cricket Club and the football club was formed to play sports during the winter months. A year later the boys sought help with the club from John Ripsher, the Bible class teacher at All Hallows Church, who became the first president of the club and its treasurer. Ripsher helped and supported the boys through the club's formative years, reorganised and found premises for the club. In April 1884 the club was renamed "Tottenham Hotspur Football Club" to avoid confusion with another London club named Hotspur, whose post had been mistakenly delivered to North London. Nicknames for the club include "Spurs" and "the Lilywhites".

Initially, the boys played games between themselves and friendly matches against other local clubs. The first recorded match took place on 30 September 1882 against a local team named the Radicals, which Hotspur lost 2–0. The team entered their first cup competition in the London Association Cup, and won 5–2 in their first competitive match on 17 October 1885 against a company's works team called St Albans. The club's fixtures began to attract the interest of the local community and attendances at its home matches increased. In 1892, they played for the first time in a league, the short-lived Southern Alliance.

The club turned professional on 20 December 1895 and, in the summer of 1896, was admitted to Division One of the Southern League. On 2 March 1898, the club also became a limited company, the Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Company. Soon after, Frank Brettell became the first ever manager of Spurs, and he signed John Cameron, who took over as player-manager when Brettell left a year later. Cameron would have a significant impact on Spurs, helping the club win its first trophy, the Southern League title in the 1899–1900 season. The following year Spurs won the 1901 FA Cup by beating Sheffield United 3–1 in a replay of the final, after the first game ended in a 2–2 draw. In doing so they became the only non-League club to achieve the feat after the formation of The Football League in 1888.

In 1908, the club was elected into the Football League Second Division and won promotion to the First Division in their first season, and finished runners-up in their first year in the league. In 1912, Peter McWilliam became manager; Tottenham finished bottom of the league at the end of the 1914–15 season when football was suspended due to the First World War. Spurs were relegated to the Second Division on the resumption of league football after the war, but quickly returned to the First Division as Second Division champions of the 1919–20 season.

On 23 April 1921, McWilliam guided Spurs to their second FA Cup win, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1–0 in the Cup Final. Spurs finished second to Liverpool in the league in 1922, but would finish mid-table in the next five seasons. Spurs were relegated in the 1927–28 season after McWilliam left. For most of the 1930s and 40s, Spurs languished in the Second Division, apart from a brief return to the top flight in the 1933–34 and 1934–35 seasons.

Former Spurs player Arthur Rowe became manager in 1949. Rowe developed a style of play, known as "push and run", that proved to be successful in his early years as manager. He took the team back to the First Division after finishing top of the Second Division in the 1949–50 season. In his second season in charge, Tottenham won their first ever top tier league championship title when they finished top of the First Division for the 1950–51 season. Rowe resigned in April 1955 due to a stress-induced illness from managing the club. Before he left, he signed one of Spurs' most celebrated players, Danny Blanchflower, who would win the FWA Footballer of the Year twice while at Tottenham.

Bill Nicholson took over as manager in October 1958. He would become the club's most successful manager, guiding the team to major trophy success three seasons in a row in the early 1960s: the Double in 1961, the FA Cup in 1962 and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963. Nicholson signed Dave Mackay and John White in 1959, two influential players of the Double-winning team, and Jimmy Greaves in 1961, the most prolific goal-scorer in the history of the top tier of English football.

The 1960–61 season started with a run of 11 wins, followed by a draw and another four wins, at that time the best ever start by any club in the top flight of English football. The title was won on 17 April 1961 when they beat the eventual runner-up Sheffield Wednesday at home 2–1, with three more games still to play. The Double was achieved when Spurs won 2–0 against Leicester City in the final of the 1960–61 FA Cup. It was the first Double of the 20th century, and the first since Aston Villa achieved the feat in 1897. The next year Spurs won their second consecutive FA Cup after beating Burnley in the 1962 FA Cup Final.

On 15 May 1963, Tottenham became the first British team to win a European trophy by winning the 1962–63 European Cup Winners' Cup when they beat Atlético Madrid 5–1 in the final. Spurs also became the first British team to win two different European trophies when they won the 1971–72 UEFA Cup with a rebuilt team that included Martin Chivers, Pat Jennings, and Steve Perryman. They had also won the FA Cup in 1967, and two League Cups (in 1971 and 1973). In total, Nicholson won eight major trophies in his 16 years at the club as manager.

Spurs went into a period of decline after the successes of the early 1970s, and Nicholson resigned after a poor start to the 1974–75 season. The team was then relegated at the end of the 1976–77 season with Keith Burkinshaw as manager. Burkinshaw quickly returned the club to the top flight, building a team that included Glenn Hoddle, as well as two Argentinians, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa, whose signings were particularly uncommon in the British game as foreign players in British football were rare at that time. The team that Burkinshaw rebuilt went on to win the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982 and the UEFA Cup in 1984.

The 1980s was a period of change that began with a new phase of redevelopment at White Hart Lane, as well as a change of directors. Irving Scholar took over the club and moved it in a more commercial direction, the beginning of the transformation of English football clubs into commercial enterprises. Debt at the club would again lead to a change in the boardroom, and Terry Venables teamed up with businessman Alan Sugar in June 1991 to take control of Tottenham Hotspur plc. Venables, who had become manager in 1987, signed players such as Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker. Under Venables, Spurs won the 1990–91 FA Cup, making them the first club to win eight FA Cups.

Tottenham was one of the five clubs that pushed for the founding of the Premier League, created with the approval of The Football Association, replacing the Football League First Division as the highest division of English football. Despite a succession of managers and players such as Teddy Sheringham, Jürgen Klinsmann and David Ginola, for a long period in the Premier League until the late 2000s, Spurs finished mid-table most seasons with few trophies won. They won the League Cup in 1999 under George Graham, and again in 2008 under Juande Ramos. Performance improved under Harry Redknapp with players such as Gareth Bale and Luka Modrić, and the club finished in the top five in the early 2010s.

In February 2001, Sugar sold his share holding in Spurs to ENIC Sports plc, run by Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy, and stepped down as chairman. Lewis and Levy would eventually own 85% of the club, with Levy responsible for the running of the club. The current manager is Mauricio Pochettino, who was appointed in May 2014. Led by Harry Kane, Spurs finished second in the 2016–17 season, their highest placed league finish since the 1962–63 season. In the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League, Tottenham beat Manchester City and Ajax to advanced to their first ever UEFA Champions League final, becoming the third club in London to reach a UEFA Champions League Final. However, Tottenham lost the final against fellow English side Liverpool by a scoreline of 0–2.

Thanks for the preview Guys. Sadly, at this stage I cannot get excited at all about this competition and will only be paying it minor attention. If our fringe players get game time and we progress further to the point where a trophy becomes a possibility, i am sure we will all start to take more interest but 100% priority this season is promotion at the moment. I think the crowd may be a bit sparse, which is sad, following the first 2 league game atmosphere but for those who are going, i commend you and hope it is entertaining, we get no injuries and that we win by whatever margin.

Will be going to this game but know absolutely nothing about the opposition.
Like others say the league is our priority and this competition is very much bottom of the list in terms of how we do. However, it does give the opportunity for those who haven’t had much game time to get up to speed and winning is always a good habit so hopefully we can keep the momentum going.
Automatic promotion and a day out at Wembley sounds good.😊

The sooner we are not in this competition the better, then PL can stop harping about us playing 60 games in a season. Which i cant see us doing. The cup run i would like to see is in the FA CUP especially as we will staring in Round 1.

Agreed. I would like us to consolidate our brilliant August and concentrate on the league. If we’re still doing really well come January a cup run (just for a change) would be amazing.

However it is a good chance to give some of the younger and fringe players a run out. But personally I don’t mind if we lose

Well if we manage to reach Round 2 I guess for us that will be classified as a cup run.

 Whit?

Of the 92 league clubs, 83 have played at the new Wembley Stadium? That is an unbelievable stat.

Over to you Saint Jude to post one of your in-depth analysis posts........, let's see the fixtures and when they were played. Just do League One downwards if you can be arsed,...... and we think we all know the answer to that. :D

Definitely a "who gives a" game. Quarter Final and it'll raise an iota of interest. Failing that, Pointless Trophies all round.

Wayne Burnett caption:

Reporter: So, Wayne. Your opponents tonight are one of only nine teams who've never played at the new Wembley. You know this?
Wayne: What? Really? Nooooo. For real?
Reporter: Its true man.
Wayne: Who, are the other 8?
Reporter: Just waitin on Statto Saint Jude with that information.
Wayne (with same face): Can he be arsed doing that?
Reporter: We're not sure Wayne. Fingers crossed.

What is this, a junior cup competition ? How is this of benefit to the actual team this season. Never seen a junior game preview in near twelve years participation.

Guess there's some honor at the end of it all but whether this club sees itself as eventual champions is open to question. It's all for the good of the club you can argue but how many are really going to possess a tangible interest in this issue.

Our kids to win 3 - 2, following on anything seems a bonus

Well Lambert has come out and said what’s the point in this competition.... hardly a glowing endorsement. In the final, I think there were 80,000 fans at Wembley for Pompey v Sunderland. That’s impressive, but both failed in the play-off’s. I think Sunderland played more than 60 games last year which can’t have helped. We have the Carabao Cup which no-one cares about.... so why another cup competition? I suppose if you’re mid-table in League 1 and nothing to play for then it’s something. Do we really need the group format as it only adds extra games? I suppose it’s good to allow Huws and Nolan to stretch their legs.

That’s an interesting stat for a new stadium. In actual fact, I think it’s only eight clubs now, as Bury were one of the clubs. Just shows how many clubs were involved in the play-off finals.

It's a CUP game Saint and as far as I can remember all league and cup games have been previewed in the past.
They might be only younger players in the squad and fringe players coming back from injury but it is NOT a junior game they only have those in the states I am afraid.
It started in 1983/84 season so been going a few years now.

Think you might find the selected team interesting and a bit stronger than you think given the rules in place around who can be selected as the EFL are making clubs take it seriously by hardening the eligibility rules for players :

Qualifying Player means any Player who:

had started the immediately preceding First Team Fixture (as defined below);

subsequently starts the immediately following First Team Fixture;

is in the list of ten Players at the Club with the highest number of starting appearances in First Team Fixtures in the same Season;

has made forty or more starting appearances in First Team Fixtures or international equivalents (and not limited to the same Club or Season); or

is on standard loan from a Premier League Club or any EFL Club operating a Category One Academy.

Only thing I can say is you clearly need a degree in something to sort out who may or may not be eligible going through the competition. The scope for an error must be really high!!

Been a good watch, we are trying to play. Dobra looks a livewire again, really happy for Roberts. Good to see Huws and Nolan putting themselves about, and Edwards has been involved. Kenlock has looked quite cultured, El Mazouni has looked like he thinks he’s the business, but delivery / impact has been poor. Dobra really has been everywhere.

A good watch Dobra was great. Huws took a knock towards the end of the first half that caused him to limp around for a bit but he managed to complete the game. He and Nolan both looked strong. Can’t see it being too long before Huws gets a start in the League.

Great to see PL sees the advantage of building a winning mentality throughout the football club. When this happens every team at every level simply wants to win and never set out to lose.
