Derby County have been charged for making "excess losses" by the EFL.

The club recorded financial losses in excess of the permitted amounts for the three-year period ending 30 June 2018.

Derby will now be referred to an independent Disciplinary Commission.

I hope they get the book slung at them frankly. They’ve been overspending season after season for so long now . Had to sell their ground off to meet some of the debts. Their players have not been paid on time ..... where will it all end I wonder ? Tip of the ice berg regarding the behaviour of so many other Clubs behaving recklessly. But no doubt the powers that be will once again bottle the decision needing to be taken . Just my thoughts on it all btw !

Yes I think you maybe right , but it’s also down to the powder puff efforts of the EFL isn’t it. They have it on their power to come down very heavily on Clubs. It will be interesting to see what happens in this situation, because once they decide to act it’ll be a packs of cards coming down for so many other Clubs.

Couldn't agree more. And there's no point in the rules being there if they won't act on them.

Just hope they have paid for Waghorn before they are fined or go bust. Tossers.

What it also highlights is that it’s not easy to simply “buy your way out” of The Championship.

It was only that one season that they went mad (15/16), spending £30m without bringing in a penny, but the two seasons before were very benign with only a million or two spent here or there. Since that season, they have actually sold more than they have bought by £1.25m (spending £46.76m and selling £48.01m)

Year - Bought - Sold (in £m)
19/20 - 7.38 - 1.22
18/19 - 12.58 - 13.01
17/18 - 11.04 - 19.15
16/17 - 15.54 - 14.63

Who wants to see the last 10 years for Town??.....

Year - Bought- Sold (in £m)
19/20 - 0.63 - 0.00
18/19 - 3.09 - 9.90 (Webster, Waghorn, Garner)
17/18 - 3.18 - 0.77
16/17 - 1.61 - 3.15 (Murphy)
15/16 - 0.46 - 10.26 (Mings)
14/15 - 0.12 - 4.28 (Cresswell)
13/14 - 0.42 - 0.00
12/13 - 2.58 - 0.00
11/12 - 2.96 - 8.10 (Wickham)
10/11 - 1.71 - 3.99 (Walters)

Spent a total of £16.76m and reaping £40.45m. Looks like great business other than we're a league lower...

It's also worth mentioning that they're the initial figures, it has Webster as £3.3m, whereas I believe (and hope) we have received a hell of a lot more. We also do a great job of buying high and selling low, considering he has since been sold for £22m. Any idiot could have seen he was an excellent player in a crap team, not an average player in an average team (obviously Evans couldn't). He and Waghorn kept us up, I don't know why the focus is on McCarthy vs Hurst. Hurst was given just £0.63m to spend after Evans had just decimated the team selling off the best of it for £9.9m.

Ah but we did at least manage to sell our way in to League One. Great Success!

Webster may or may not be an excellent player but he totally lost his way the last few months here and was p*ss poor tbh.

You don't lose your value on form though, maybe he wasn't worth £22m, but he certainly wasn't worth £3m, not at such a young age too.

I think the 22 million was obscene for him, equally we could and should have got more than we did, that's the story of our history, Mings apart.

I don't think we've done too badly with many of the large transfer fees, it's the players that are worth 2, 3, 4 million that have slipped through our fingers and left for nothing which is terrifying. I know you're going to get bad luck in that area from time to time, but it's also about keeping them fit, giving them a stage to sell themselves on and a healthy club atmosphere to thrive in, that's been as big a failure as any.

I agree. We rarely gave the youngsters a chance before letting them go.

Interesting to see PL explicitly referring to the Webster sale as a *ock up in an interview regarding Wolfenden last week.

In all these conversations it's worth remembering that often a player makes it very clear that he wants a move and sometimes the buy-in club is aware of that and able to take advantage. Maybe Waghorn was a good example of that and in that situation we got a pretty good price for a player that wanted away, was it around £8m?

Also sometimes we need cash to finance a manager's planned purchases. In Hurst's case he wanted to buy a new team so had to get rid of some bodies. Should we have refused him the chance to do that? Would he have joined us (I'm sure we all wish he hadn't :D ) if we had not allowed him to clear out some to raise cash?

By the way the number for Derby make interesting reading Ricco. I suppose they are making losses like they are because of salaries. That was the point in relation to Waghorn and other players that they acquired (Lawrence?). This is why they have to be made an example of. They disturb the equilibrium in the league if they start offering silly salaries for players and then get fined for it. Their punishment in my view should be a salary cap of the average in the league that they are playing and the ability of all players to escape their contracts if they are not happy with it.

Webster made it clear he wanted to leave 5 days after Hursts arrival, I still think to this day he is worth nowhere near 22 Million

It’s a shame football isn’t as strict as Rugby Union where Saracens have just been crucified for breaking the games financial rules. I just wonder if the Premier League would do the same if it were Liverpool or Manchester City breaking the rules.

Was thinking exactly the same thing . It would really shake the game back to its senses I think . Somethings got to change / happen.
