The ESL still not officially dead.

In a statement released at 07:30 BST it said: "Despite the announced departure of the English clubs, forced to take such decisions due to the pressure put on them, we are convinced our proposal is fully aligned with European law and regulations as was demonstrated today by a court decision to protect the Super League from third-party actions."

Would love to see this lot scrape around Europe looking for any teams to play them.

The main instigator in this is the Real Madrid president (soon to be ex-president). If your club are 1 billion euros in debt and all the vast amount of riches of the Champions League aren’t enough - then I guess you go looking for a bigger pot of gold. They could just try tightening their belt instead.

Says on BBC News (30mins ago), that this super league will not now go ahead .

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56830308

It’s dead in the water and the PL 6 pulling out probably forced this outcome . 👍

Personally I believe that it has achieved enough to serve the purposes of the creators. We will see in the next weeks whether changes are mooted to the CL format to create more big name head to heads and perhaps some changes to revenue allocation for these big games.......

It's not over yet.

Whilst I think the ESL is definitely a dead duck at least the next few years, it will have have an impact over the forthcoming CL negotiations which maybe all that was intended, however I think not. I think this project wad dreamt up by the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Juventus who have always been envious of the English Premier League and its riches which their own domestic leagues are a mere shadow of. Unfortunately our greedy Super Six owners weren’t able to see though this and could only see £m signs flashing up in front of them. They also underestimated the reaction of the managers and players of their clubs and even more so that of their fans whose voice for once had been heard. Never again shall we hear it said that fans opinions don’t matter.

Great original post Liz, one of the best non Town discussions on here for a while.

Agreed about this being the brainchild of the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Those clubs are facing a lot of financial problems and maybe it’s not just greed, but desperation. Just surprised that the PL teams came on board. Just shows they don’t understand football and the fans in this country.
Did they think that they could rely on global fans in Asia to support this whole project whilst turning their back on real fans in this country?
If it was a negotiating ploy then it backfired and just gave UEFA a pretty strong hand at the table. UEFA still needs these big clubs for the CL so I can see them making some concessions to them. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they came down hard on 1 or 2 clubs who were at the forefront of all of this. Divide and conquer style. It was all going to crumble when just a couple of clubs wavered.

I guess somebody mentioned Rangers and Celtic as possibly being part of ESL; now they're talking about Rangers/Celtic joining a 'British' Premiere League of 18 clubs. Of course, the Scottish teams would have to replace two English teams. There's also talk of a playoff type scenario for Champions League qualification, which I quite like.

I don’t like it.
The Rangers / Celtic thing. It’s going to affect or destroy the Scottish league. It’s up to the Scottish league to improve things and maybe level the playing field up there. It’s their problem to sort out. And is their such a clamour in England to allow them in from fans? Once again, it’s a money-maker thing. Get two potential cash-cows brought into the league to get rid of two smaller clubs who can’t generate enough revenue. So for clubs like us who have a dream of getting there... it makes it harder. Is our game that boring?

No, it’s not. There’s plenty enough money going around anyway and they should be thinking of sustaining the quality rather than trying to think of more ways to make money.
Has anyone not learnt anything from the last week. Stop f**king with our game and trying to squeeze more money out of it.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the Rangers/Celtic inclusion, I do like the Champions League playoff scenario.

With the play-offs.... do we need them? There’s still quite a number of clubs who could come from 7th/8th to get a CL place. It’s just another money-spinner. The PL clubs are complaining about too many games. And then they want to add more.
I think they need to come to their senses and understand you can’t squeeze any more out of the game without harming it. Protect it and look to make it more sustainable and try and keep it as competitive as possible.
I’m not a great fan of the PL, but compared to La Liga it does throw up more surprise results and surprise packages (who’d think West Ham would be up there). Who’d think Liverpool would be in 7th place? It’s not a league in decline at all..... just some just feel it needs to be making more money.

Fair point. I just think a playoff system would make the league exciting until the very end, and also give those clubs who never qualify a chance. Sure the big clubs will have another revenue stream, but so will clubs like Everton, West Ham, Aston Villa and Leeds. Hell maybe even Wolfie's Wolves would qualify for the Champions League!

It's always the same old teams that qualify for the Champions League. I'm all for shaking things up a bit to make it more interesting for the fans, but I'm not supporting those c*ck owners.

Sure if the ESL was inevitable, I'd accept it and try to find the positives. I'm glad it hasn't happened though.

Good point about giving some smaller clubs the opportunity to ‘steal’a place in the CL. It’d be interesting fora lot of fans. But the big clubs need to get into the CL and UEFA need these big clubs to get in there to generate more revenue. For real fans, it would make it more interesting, but there’s a lot of new corporate fans or sports bar fans or armchair fans from across the globe to satisfy. Liverpool or Man Utd or Real Madrid not making the CL would be a massive financial blow to the CL and to the respective clubs. It’s bullshit really, but I’d prefer a PL like it is with the occasional surprise ( Leicester winning the league) than the ESL .... which was just invented to ensure the ‘big’ clubs keep most of the money ( of which they’re very good at pissing away).

British Super League planned secretly with Rangers and Celtic joining Premier League giants Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal (thesun.co.uk)

I don't think for One second Rangers & Celtic would give up their guaranteed European place every season which is what this would amount to.

these two quotes on the Mix make some sense, especially the first one.

Just having Celtic and Rangers does a similar disservice to the rest of Scotland's clubs as the ESL did to the rest of England's clubs.

Bill S Preston Esq.said[/quote]
I was thinking about having the old firm in the English Pyramid when it looked possible the greedy six were ****ing off.
It would have made sense from a commercial point of view for those of us left behind.

I would be more comfortable merging the leagues with some sort of regional lower divisions though, thus raising the ceiling for other Scottish clubs.

With the greedy six remaining though, voting the OF in is a Turkey's voting for Christmas scenario though, isn't it?

In my opinion, Celtic could be monstrous with PL money behind them. Rangers less so but still formidable. They'd certainly be an obstacle for Wolves and everyone else.

Can't see it getting the green light TBH. Plus we don't need their sectarian hatred BS south of the border either.

Celtic & SevCo ain’t going anywhere. They’re stuck in Scotland where they should be. They should be content in seemingly thinking it takes racking up millions upon millions of debt to consistently win the SPL. Horrible clubs.
Although having said that, ......, shouldn’t be too harsh on The SevCo. They’re new.

i think the big point being made is, if we pushed for the big clubs in Scotland to take the places of these top 6 premier clubs, we would be doing exactly the same damage to Scottish football as what the English Premier and Football league are complaining about,
