Shocked to hear this very sad news. 68 is really no age at all!

While i only have video clips to go on, so you don't get to fully appreciate all sides of his game, i am sure his name would be very high on a list of all time great Ipswich Town strikers for most older fans. No doubt kids playing football in the park in the late 70's early 80's would want to be Paul Mariner.

RIP Paul. Thank you for the fantastic memories, even for those of us who were never lucky enough to see you play.

What a man, what a true legend. Used to watch him get kicked from pillar to post then kick them back and score

R.I.P Paul, thoughts with your family and loved ones

such sad news, he was an awsome player and one of my all time favourites. Losing him at a relatively young age too, genuinely feel upset and my deepest condolences to his family, friends and anybody who knew him.

Only got the news a moment ago been too busy to catch up with things. First reaction, one of sadness. Aware he had his health issues but still comes as a shock all the same. Sympathies to Mr Mariners immediate family at this difficult time.

Not to say without him we wouldn't had done what we did 40 - 45 years back, but played a pivotal part in those achievements without question. Recall almost like no time when he took off in '84 and left a big void in the team but what a servant here and complimented those players around him.

How much would a player like that, at his prime, be worth in todays market, it would be unfair to put a price on it but someone like that, as he were, would be worth every penny and then some.

Know i’ve already commented on this thread, but must say, since he died (and his name is the thread title) every time i venture into the forum and see his name……. Can’t believe he’s dead. :(

Such was the mans impact on my life back in the day. Kevin Beatties main years, i was slightly too young and that news didn’t hit home as much. Mariners death has me in bigger disbelief than when SBR left us.
Its the vivid memories of the days when 10/11/12 years old and “being Mariner” when out playing football with pals wearing the full ITFC kit bought from a sports shop on Rose Street, Edinburgh.

RIP Paul Mariner. Dont know if you ever knew it when alive, and “legend” gets thrown about too much these days, ……. But you were indeed an absolute legend. 🌹

Do you think we have an Ipswich Town appreciation club at the Mol. i think it more about the same hate for your rivals that connect the 2 clubs.

A lot of it started after this harmless tackle on that little weasel Bellamy 8)

in this thread there is this quote.

Norman Bell ; Quote;
“I would say that team picture was taken not long after filming of “Escape to Victory " had finished as John Wark, Russell Osman, Kevin O'Callaghan, Laurie Sivell and Kevin Beattie are all sporting haircuts far shorter than they did usually as Ipswich supplied those players for the film !”

Image

Anyone confirm that.? as i didn't know that.

I would say accurate. John Warks hair was unusually short in ETV and likewise in that team photo.

Some absolute lowlife has stolen the shirt with Paul’s name on from SBRs statue.🤬
