Pre-Match Thoughts - Mike

Bonne Voyage.....................

At last !!!! The sweet taste of victory is ours !!! At the Seventh time of asking Town have finally got their League campaign up and running with their first Three point haul of the season. Typically and probably in true Town fashion it comes at what was arguably our toughest test of the season so far with an awkward looking trip to Lincoln, a venue where we have had many tough times in recent years, with confidence fragile it was fair to say that not too many Town fans were expecting us to get the win at Sincil Bank so it just goes to show you never can tell what to expect at this most unpredictable of Divisions never fails to surprise.

While it may not have been the classic tale of Two halves I think it was fair to say Town were just about good value for their interval lead before withstanding a bit of a Lincoln onslaught at times after the break. Town had already thumped one off the bar from Cameron Burgess before that man MaCauley Bonne popped up once again with his Fifth of the season following some good work from Hayden Coulsen who's pinpoint cross was headed home by Bonne, much to the annoyance of the Lincoln defence who felt there had been a foul by Bonne as he scored, who cares, we don't, luck evens itself right ?

Town could well have doubled their lead Twice before half time as both times debut man Bersant Celina was denied as he looked more likely to score, it just had you wondering at that point if we were again going to rue the missed chances. Lincoln did finish the half the stronger and went close themselves before strong appeals for a penalty were waived away by the referee as the half drew to a close.

There was a scare for Town early in the second half as Poole slammed the ball into Town's net, thankfully a linesman flag was up and we all breathed a hugs sigh of relief. The pressure continued to grow on Town's defence as the half wore on but thankfully this time the defence stood firm with Burgess & Donacien in particular playing their part but in truth they all did their bit. Having to endure Nine minutes of injury time was murder and you always kind of feel we are going to throw it away, this time however we stood firm and got the job done much to the sheer relief of everyone concerned.

Image

It was so pleasing to keep the clean sheet after we had been leaking goals for fun and it will have done the defence no end of good so well done to Donacien, Coulsen, Burgess, Edmundson, Woolfenden and Hladky who have all endured a fair bit of criticism in recent weeks and rightly so, I am especially pleased for the keeper who I believe will be a top keeper given the chance, we need to stick with him now. Seeing CEO Mark Ashton celebrating with the fans at the final whistle is fantastic, as was the reaction of a bruised and battered Paul Cook, don't tell me they don't care, it was clear for all to see. Hopefully Bonne's strike will now see us embark on the expected voyage to some level of success next May, it's only One win but it's a start.

Image

Having plundered the points at Lincoln Town now have a gilt edged chance to build on it with Two home games in the space of Four days, Doncaster Rovers come calling on Tuesday but first up we have a tasty looking match up with relegated Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls had started the season ok but a run of Three without a win has seen them slide into mid table, Saturday's draw at home to Shrewsbury Town followed on from a Three goal thrashing at Plymouth Argyle so they wont exactly be bursting with confidence and it could be the tide has turned in opposite directions for the respective clubs.

The Wednesday squad is littered with familiar names and they are not sure on experience either, Barry Bannen, Dominic Iorfa (remember him), Saido Berahino and Lee Gregory to name but Four all ply their trade at Hillsborough but Town's squad looks every bit as strong, if not stronger and there is no reason why we can't make it Two on the bounce to drive ourselves further up that table. Hopefully Paul Cook will keep changes to a minimum although the return of Kyle Edwards would be most welcome, swapping and changing won't go down well should we fail to get the right result. With optimism restored I am going for a narrow Town win as this new look Town team continue to get acquainted with each other and confidence grows. Home Win.

The Opposition – Sheffield Wednesday

The club was a cricket club when it formed in 1820 as The Wednesday Cricket Club, Lancashire (named after the day of the week when they played their matches). A meeting on the evening of Wednesday 4 September 1867 at the Adelphi Hotel established a footballing side to keep the team together and fit during the winter months.

On 1 February 1868, Wednesday played their first competitive football match as they entered the Cromwell Cup.

Charles Clegg joined Wednesday in 1867, starting a relationship that would last the rest of his life and eventually lead to him becoming the club's chairman. He also became president and chairman of the Football Association and was known as the "Napoleon of Football". In 1876, they acquired Scot James Lang. Although he was not employed by the club, he was given a job by a member of the Sheffield Wednesday board that had no formal duties. He is now acknowledged as the first professional football player in England.

The football club turned professional in 1887 after pressure from players threatening to defect to other clubs. The move to professionalism took the club from Bramall Lane, which had taken a share of the ticket revenue, to the new Olive Grove.

In 1889, the club became founder members of the Football Alliance. Despite finishing the following season bottom of the Alliance, they were eventually elected to the expanded Football League in 1892.

Due to an expansion of the local railway lines, the club was told that they would have to find a new ground for the 1899–1900 season. After a difficult search, the club finally bought some land in the village of Owlerton, which at the time was several miles outside the Sheffield city boundaries. Construction of a new stadium (now known as Hillsborough Stadium) was completed within months.

In the summer of 1912, a Wednesday player, George Robertson, presented the club with an owl mascot. A monkey mascot introduced some years earlier had not brought much luck.

The club was almost relegated in the 1927–28 season, but they pulled off a great escape, rising from bottom to 14th. Wednesday went on to win the League title the following season (1928–29), which started a run that saw the team finishing lower than third only once until 1936. The period was topped off with the team winning the FA Cup for the third time in the club's history in 1935.

The 1950s saw Wednesday unable to consistently hold on to a position in the top flight and this period became known as the yo-yo years. After being promoted back up in 1950, they were relegated three times, although each time they bounced back up by winning the Second Division the following season

This led to a decade of successfully remaining in the First Division, which included a run to the FA Cup final in 1966.

Off the field, the club was embroiled in the British betting scandal of 1964, in which three of their players were accused of match fixing and betting against their own team in an away game at Ipswich Town. The three were subsequently convicted and, on release from prison, banned from football for life.

Wednesday were relegated at the end of the 1969–70 season, starting the darkest period in the club's history. After going into free-fall, they dropped to the Third Division for the first time in their history and were marooned there for five seasons. The club was almost relegated to the Fourth Division in 1976, but a revival under the management of Jack Charlton, and the aid of coach Tony Toms and – after Charlton resigned in 1983 – Howard Wilkinson, saw them return to the First Division in 1984.

Sheffield Wednesday spent the majority of the 1980s and 1990s in the top tier of English football.

On 15 April 1989, the club's stadium was the scene of one of the worst sporting tragedies ever, at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, at which 96 Liverpool fans were fatally crushed in the Leppings Lane end of the stadium. The tragedy resulted in many changes taking places at Hillsborough and all other leading stadiums in England.

The 1990–91 season was the only one out of sixteen in a row that Wednesday spent in a lower division, but the season is best remembered by fans for Wednesday's swift return to the top flight and their League Cup victory over Manchester United to win their first major trophy for over 50 years. This League Cup triumph was the last domestic cup to be won by a club competing outside the top level of English football.

Wednesday's fortunes took a turn for the worse when a succession of managers failed to maintain this form, and new managers spent small fortunes building squads that were ultimately ineffective, which saw the club's debts get out of control and Wednesday being relegated down to League 1.

After narrowly avoiding yet another relegation in 2003–04 and a poor start to the 2004–05 Football League One campaign, Paul Sturrock took over the Manager’s role and they were promoted back to the Championship via the playoffs. Sturrock was sacked after a poor start to the 2006–07 season and replaced by Brian Laws.

The 2007–08 season began with Wednesday's worst ever start to a season, as they lost six league games in a row, and they only avoided relegation with a win on the last day of the season. Halfway through Sheffield Wednesday's 2009–10 season, Brian Laws was sacked, and was replaced by Alan Irvine. On the last day of the season, needing a win to stay up, Wednesday drew 2–2 with Crystal Palace and were relegated to League One.

Between July and November 2010, Sheffield Wednesday faced a series of winding up orders for unpaid tax and VAT bills. On 29 November 2010, Milan Mandarić agreed to purchase the club. The purchase was completed after an Extraordinary General Meeting of Sheffield Wednesday's shareholders on 14 December 2010, during which 99.7% of shareholders voted to sell the company to Milan Mandarić's UK Football Investments for £1, as well as settling the club’s outstanding debts.

Gary Megson replaced Irvine as the club's manager in February 2011 and the Owls went on to finish 15th in League One. The following season, the Owls pushed on for promotion out of League One. But, after falling behind Charlton and Sheffield United at the top of the table, Megson was sacked and replaced by Dave Jones. Jones went on to guide the Owls to promotion to the Championship on the final day with a 2–0 home victory over Wycombe.

Following this season, the Owls struggled in the Championship. However, with a better run of form after Christmas, the club secured Championship safety on the final day of the season, beating Middlesbrough 2–0.

In the 2013/2014 season, Wednesday finished in 16th place with 53 points, ending the season under Stuart Gray’s management following Jones’ departure.

In 2014, the club was again taken over by a new owner, Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, who purchased the club from Milan Mandarić for £37.5m

Chansiri stated his intention to win promotion back to the club for the 2017–18 season – the football club's 150th anniversary – and came close to achieving that goal a year head of schedule, with new coach Carlos Carvalhal leading the club into the end of season play-offs at the end of the 2015–16 season, but Wednesday were beaten in the final by Hull City at Wembley.

In the 2016/17 Sheffield Wednesday performed well again finishing in fourth spot but were beaten in the semi’s by Huddersfield on penalties.

In January 2018, Jos Luhukay was appointed as the manager taking over the role from Carlos Carvalhal.

In January 2019 Steve Bruce replaced Luhukay as Manager after his sacking from Aston Villa, however, Bruce controversially resigned in July 2019 to manage Newcastle United after Wednesday finished the season in 12th place.

On 6 September 2019, the club appointed former Birmingham City manager Garry Monk as the new manager, who achieved a 16th-place finish in a season that was interrupted from March to June by the COVID-19 pandemic. On 31 July 2020, Sheffield Wednesday were found guilty of breaking EFL spending rules and began the 2020–21 season on –12 points, though the deficit was later reduced to –6 upon appeal.

On 9 November 2020, Monk was sacked after a poor start to the season and was replaced by Tony Pulis. However, Pulis was also dismissed after only 45 days in charge on 28 December 2020. After a few months with Neil Thompson as caretaker manager, Darren Moore was appointed as the club's third permanent manager of the season in March 2021. Despite taking the fight to the final day, Moore could not prevent relegation come the end of the season, bringing Wednesday's 9-year spell in the Championship to an end.

That’s a slimline version of Tango in that photo of the Wednesday fans compared to the times I’ve met him at England games.
Believe he has been banned from Wednesday games for 2 years so he won’t be at Portman Road Saturday.
As for the game going for a 1-1 draw.

Must be a shortage of toothpaste in Sheffield. That lot need to borrow some from Ashton & Cook Toothpaste Supplies Co. Ltd.

Must say....., for having to write so many previews after losses, ...., to begin a positive one with "Bonne Voyage" is superb. The journey, "the voyage" courtesy of Bonne, starts now. Well done.

Steering clear of the poll. But in my head, leaning towards home win. The lads will have enjoyed that and they'll have witnessed what it meant to Mark Ashton so I reckon that'll spur them on also.

I had to view the opposition last five score as had no idea what they've been up to or what to expect from them.

Now done, they do look a soft touch and this fixture is highly winnable. It just depends how much our players want it.

It's imperative to go for and achieve a second victory. It may be early in a season but make no mistake about it, the gap between top and bottom can expand considerably even in next to no time. So easy to be caught out or become complacent. Think walking a beach at low tide.

Will try to get involved while in progress but time will be the deciding factor. Voted for us to win it, this is a very good opportunity, I hope Cook and the players take full advantage of it.

Even though we got that first win last week it feels like this game is just as important if not more so, the team really needs to build some momentum so after grabbing that first win it would be massive to back it up with another win tomorrow.

3-1 Town COYB!

Coulsen out…. And another unnamed player to miss who was in the starting line up at Lincoln.

Hope it’s not Burns. Might be difficult to replace him.

Sorry everyone, town will lose today, its my first game with my boy since lockdown. He's never seen town win live!! I'm starting wonder if it's classed as child cruelty taking a 7 year old to watch ipswich.

Boo Hiss! Mind you, i am at my first game since Fleetwood Feb 2020 and i too do not have a particularly good record at Portman Road! Perhaps hardly surprising with the dire football we have had to witness under the previous 2 Pauls.
Was chatting to some Wednesday fans on way into town and they were none too confident and were tipping Penney to score.

Wow. Where did El Miz come from? Evans out. Really surprised at that- would have thought Harper would be in.

Town: Hladky, Donacien, Edmundson, Burgess, Penney, Carroll, El Mizouni, Burns, Celina, Fraser, Bonne (C).

Subs: Holy, Woolfenden, Vincent-Young, Harper, Aluko, Chaplin, Pigott.

Losing it in midfield again… and sloppy defending.

Well, what garbage. Burgess made too many errors. Burns, Celina and el miz poor, bonne with two lovely chances but hit them both at the keeper. My son wanted to leave with ten minutes left so I obliged. Heard the cheer on my way to the station, really didn't give a feck. Town must perform better than that if we are to challenge for the top 8. What is Pal Cook doing with the team??

We were poor but boy a draw felt like a win! Defence looks a bit better but we lack that creative spark and the bite in midfield. I just hope Morsy provides it. Carroll, El Miz and Celina too lightweight for me and far too much backward/sideways passing. Also, I wish we could stay calm near goal and play the man in space who would need only a tap in instead going for the glory shot!! I have to day that so far, Mikes assessment that Celina is a luxury player is right - seen the last 2 games and he is simply not the man at this level. I hope it changes but he is a luxury we can ill afford at present. On to Tuesday and a win will make it alright - for now, its progress of sorts...

I thought he played a blinder tbh . Looked like a seasoned professional didn’t he 👍

Not sure I’d say we played “ badly”. SW are no mugs and were Championship last season , and this was still not our strongest side out there today . Plus I’d say SW can count themselves very fortunate not to have been at least 2 goals down before their only real shot on goal went in ( a taller GK would IMO have saved it ) . I’ll personally take a point . If we win Tuesday that’ll be 7 pts from a possible 9 …..

Hands up seen nothng of the game and got the score late although read game report on a rival site. Relieved to have saved it right at the end, some fan sites would have been foaming at the mouth had we lost and even thought of putting Chaplin as first scorer before Fraser in the prediction league. At least it were an assist from the latter that brought about the goal.

21000 is a fine attendance, it's got to be said. Disappointed not to win and it's either unbeaten in two, or one win in eight games - depends how you want to view it. Would imagine those that were there, frustrated with the one point but relief all the same to avert defeat at the very end. We got a winnable game with Doncaster next if correct, but with this team all things are subject to change.
