Brighton trigger recall clause

Brighton have exercised a recall clause in Christian Walton’s loan to Ipswich Town, we understand. Though the goalkeeper could still face Bolton next weekend.

It’s understood the Premier League club informed the Blues of their decision following the weekend victory over Gillingham, in which Walton kept a clean sheet, but the deal is thought to include a seven-day grace period, which means he could remain with the club until after the visit to Wanderers.

Ipswich have been working on a permanent deal for a goalkeeper who has impressed during his time on loan and continue to hold that interest, despite his recall. Talks are ongoing.

The 26-year-old is understood to be enjoying his football at Portman Road and is open to the possibility of a permanent move.

Walton’s contract with Brighton expires in the summer, with the Seagulls hopeful of recouping some money on a highly-rated player who has never managed to break through.

He’s likely to return to the Amex to serve as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper between now and the end of the season, at which point he is likely to move on.

Brighton are keen to loan out giant Dutch keeper Kjell Scherpen, who played for them in the FA Cup at the weekend after second-choice Jason Steele picked up an injury. Spaniard Robert Sanchez is Brighton’s first choice goalkeeper.

I can’t imagine he will command much of a fee with only 5 months to run on his contract especially as he’s unlikely to get any game time between now and the end of the season if he goes back there.

I can’t believe he’s been at Brighton for almost 9 years and has only made 3 appearances for them and been almost permanently out on loan with Town being his 8th loan club.

I would think there’s a deal to be done if he’s happy to sign for us.

Fingers crossed.

Would the fact he’s still at the club - albeit temporarily- be a good indicator. Once they triggered the clause, we could have sent him back. And prepare Hladky and Holy. Sounds like Brighton only see him as third choice and just want some cash. The only other obvious destination would be a Championship side. A lot of Championship sides we can match for wages and a fee…. and how many Championship sides need a GK and can offer him the No 1 jersey? The fact that he’s settled here as No 1 must be to our advantage. It’s a strange position as GK as you could be a very good GK but spend much of your career on the bench waiting for an unlikely injury or the other GK to mess up. I would have thought Walton wants a permanent home and be first choice GK.

I actually think we might lose him.

The issues:
Brighton know we want him.
GK’s are not a run of the mill type of signing.
Other clubs ( Championship?) were touted as interested a week or so ago .
We are at the limit of our financial capability ,
We’d need to offload other players first b4 signing anyone else.

All of these factors will affect his price tag .

I guess its all about Mr. Walton and what he wants. We will have to wait and see. Other Champ sides will no doubt be alerted. I tend to agree with Hallam but its clearly on a knife edge.

Unsure how reliable these online sources are for salary but apparently he is on £8.5k a week? Small fry for prem clubs, reasonable for championship clubs but high for league one.

I guess another outcome is town tell him we will sign him in the summer, he stays at Brighton and rejects other transfers and signs for us, probably highly unlikely as would involve a lot of trust!
