Ipswich Town v Burton Albion

Pre-Match Thoughts - Bluemike
Clinging To The Coat Tails........
Town's hard earned draw at Stadium MK last Saturday not only kept our good run going but also ensured we just about kept ourselves in touch with the leading pack, a point may not sound like much but given the size of the task we have on our hands to reel them in it could well prove to be a vital point. The way the game panned out had much to be encouraged about as Town more than matched their opponents who have been in fine form and who are a very tough team to beat, on another day we could well have beaten them and even though Christian Walton in Town's goal got man of the match that does paint a slightly false picture, yes he made a couple of top saves but aside from that had little to do.
The game itself was an excellent advert for League One and for the neutral it would have been a very enjoyable game to watch. Being critical it has to be said that we are struggling in the striker department right now with all our Four main Strikers currently finding the going tough for One reason or another, if we could only get one or Two of them back on form it would make such a massive difference to the last Third of our season, goals win games and at the moment we are trying to scrape a goal here and there.
Despite only picking up a solitary point Town still find themselves a mere Five points off the top six, it was a day that went in our favour for once with Oxford, Sunderland, Wycombe and Sheff Wed all failing to win, hopefully it is the start of some of those teams beginning to falter as the run in approaches, as we all know One or Two generally tail off at the crucial time and we will need this to be the case again if we are to mount a serious late challenge.
If ever we needed reminding of how important to the team Sam Morsy is we saw it at MK on Saturday, I thought the skipper started the game in fine fashion and looked really up for it throughout, he really drove the team forward with his surging runs and tough tackling, his passing was on the money and it seemed to inspire those around him, I actually thought the Midfield partnership with Tyreeq Bakinson worked well although others weren't quite so sure, I think with more games under their belts together it could be a successful pairing.
The clean sheets keep on coming and I think that is now Six in Nine games under Kieran McKenna's leadership which is quite a stat given our early season failings, you always give yourself a chance if you don't concede and if we can keep that trend up we have a chance. I think much of our improved defensive showing is down to Two things, firstly the ability of the manager to change the system to a back Three and secondly the vastly improved form of Luke Woolfenden who it has to be said has improved massively, I was not overly impressed for much of the season but it is no coincidence he has looked a different player under the new Manager and will only go from strength to strength as his confidence builds.
With Two home game against middle order teams coming up Town really do have the opportunity to close the gap further, while games are never easy we will be expected to beat both Burton & Cheltenham at home and those Six points could see a big change in the league situation especially if those around us continue to slip up. First of those Two games see's Burton Albion come to Portman Road, the Brewers currently sit comfortably in Mid division and well clear of any relegation fears courtesy of a decent run of results against teams in and around them, last time out they comfortably defeated Bolton who have been in good form of late so they will come to Portman Road in confident mood.
I think Town will be too good for Burton providing we get our attack firing again, defensively we look solid and I would be surprised if the Burton attack had enough about them to cause us too many problems, the home crowd is crucial and if they are on song and right behind the team I think Town will turn it on and win this One by a couple of clear goals.
The Opposition – Burton Albion
Burton Albion can claim lineage from four now defunct clubs: Burton Swifts, Burton Town, Burton United and Burton Wanderers.
Burton Albion were formed in 1950, and joined the Birmingham & District League. They finished the 1953–54 season as runners-up, and in 1958–59 joined the Southern League North Western zone. In 1965–66, Burton missed out on the runners-up place on goal difference, but were still promoted to the Southern League Premier Division.
They avoided relegation in 1968, thanks to Stevenage Town folding, but were relegated to Division One after an unsuccessful 1969–70 season. Burton missed out on promotion on goal average in 1970–71, but finished as runners-up the following season and were promoted back to the Premier Division.
The next two seasons saw them relegated and then promoted back to the Premier Division again. They stayed in the same division until being relegated once more at the end of 1976–77.
League rearrangements saw Burton moved to the Northern Premier League, because of their location in the central Midlands, and then back to the Southern League in 1987–88, the season after losing in a replayed FA Trophy final to Kidderminster Harriers.
In October 1998, Nigel Clough was appointed as player-manager and he led the club to two successive runners-up spots, in 1999–2000 and 2000–01.
Burton were again moved to the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 2001–02, which they won by a margin of 15 points, and the club was promoted to the Football Conference for the first time.
The club was brought to national attention when they were drawn at home against 11-time winners Manchester United in the third round of the 2005–06 FA Cup. The Brewers held the Premier League team to a 0–0 draw at home, but lost the reply 5–0 in front of over 11,000 Burton fans, setting a record for number of away fans at Old Trafford.
In January 2009, Burton went on to set a league record for the most consecutive wins and, in February 2009, when the team was 19 points clear at the top of the table, Conference sponsors Blue Square declared Burton the winners of the 2008–09 title in a PR stunt in which they paid out all bets. However, a bad run of form only saw this confirmation take place due to other results on the last day of the season.
Burton finished in 13th place in their first campaign in the Football League.
During the 2014–15 season, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took over the managerial position at the Brewers and led them to the League Two title, which meant promotion to League One for the first time in their history. Hasselbaink left by mutual consent in December 2015 to join Queens Park Rangers as manager.
Nigel Clough returned to Burton to replace him for his second spell as manager and led the club to a second-place finish in the league, earning promotion to the Championship, another first for Burton, in the 2015/16 season.
Burton struggled throughout their first season in the higher division, but secured their Championship status on 29 April 2017 after a 1–1 draw with Barnsley.
Burton spent much of their second season in the Championship in the relegation zone. It was looking likely the club was going drop back down to League One, however three wins in the late stage of the season boosted their chances of survival, including a 2-1 win over relegation rivals Sunderland. However following a 2-1 defeat to Preston North End on the final day of the season, Burton were relegated back to League One.
In 2018-19, in spite of being in mid-table in League One, they made the semi finals of the 2018–19 EFL Cup, after wins over Shrewsbury, Aston Villa, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough. Facing Manchester City, Burton lost the 1st leg 9–0 at the Etihad Stadium, eventually losing 10–0 on aggregate.
On New Year's Day 2021, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was appointed manager of Burton Albion for the second time in his career.
Last season Burton Albion finished 16th place in League 1.

Re: League 1 - Ipswich Town vs Burton Albion Preview & Matchday Thread
I don’t see any reason why we can’t win this game although I would have been far more confident before Burton appear to have easily defeated Bolton 3-1 only a few days ago.
As I see it expect another low scoring game decided by a single goal.
Prediction; 1-0 win to Town.

Got to win. If we don’t I think our promotion goose may be cooked so they’ll be pressure but the boys will be up for it.
Trust in McKenna to get the game plan right and stop them scoring. At the other end, I think we’ll make the breakthrough but might take a while. Chaplin could be the man.
1-0 (went for 2-0 and a first-half goal in prediction league but now feeling less bullish)

Another issue in the financial world of soccer.
https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/burt ... ttendances
A club with those attendances being able to afford a squad of players salaries plus Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and his staff?
Not saying attendances is the only income, of course its not……., but no other businesses operate (or are allowed to operate) like football clubs.
Got to say home win. Burton @ Portman Rd should be a guaranteed 3pts. Would certainly be huge regarding 6th.
And if draw, then its a frantic look at other results scenario.
A loss doesn’t really come into it. In fact, if its a loss —->> Keiran McKenna, Mark Ashton and ALL the players OUT!!

Re: League 1 - Ipswich Town vs Burton Albion Preview & Matchday Thread
Got no inclination to discuss Ashton, seem tired of that sh*t already. Believe voted to win, and we got to. Another opportunity on a plate for three points although with this club you never can tell what will arrive. Seriously, this is three points begging to be had, would be real disappointed not to come away with anything less.
Adverse weather front hitting Eastern UK for the weekend so game should be played out in awkward conditions. Hope the ball is played often at ground level and minimum on punting in the air / up field , as someone could be taking a hike to Sudbury to retrieve it if conditions are to be believed.

Definite bannana skin match but need to win. Home form has been first class under McKenna and away form picking up also. Need to keep the momentum going. Anything less than 3 points will be huge disappointment

If we’re in a mini-league with Plymouth, Oxford and Sheff Weds, they’re all playing away today so there’s some potential to make a bit of progress towards the goal of a play-off place.

Ashton’s not only signing players without McKenna’s consent….. he’s picking the team. Meddling sod.

It wouldn’t be my choice starting line up but in Kieron McKenna we must trust given he see’s far more of the players than any of us and knows what he wants from them both individually and collectively. His team selection will also screw a few first goal scorer predictions mine included.
Really looking forward to this, great picture and sound quality on ifollow.

And Pigott? At home v Burton?
Big, BIG chance to let the Ipswich fans see what he can do in person, not just on youtube clips.
Law of averages say he’ll get chances……. If no goals and subbed off in 70th……. Just leave the club dude.

Their set play looks dangerous and will keep our defence on its toes. Great header on the line from Evans, could easily have been 1-1.

To be fair Burton playing well too, a very entertaining game.
